About us
Who we are
Scene & Heard is a mentoring charity and professional theatre company in Somers Town, Camden. Our vision is for children and young people to have the support, attention and encouragement to discover the power of their own imagination and where it can take them.
We work exclusively with children from Somers Town, where 40% of children live in poverty, 48% of residents are economically inactive and many families face significant mental and physical ill health.
At the heart of our work is a unique, long-term, mentoring playwriting programme, that partners children with volunteer arts professionals to create theatre. Now established in our own premises in the heart of the neighbourhood we serve, we have extended our programme to incorporate Creative Outreach, giving any child in Somers Town free access to high-quality arts experiences.
Each year, we support over 60 children through our core programme, and a further 50 through our Creative Outreach. All activities are delivered from our dedicated Arts Hub in Somers Town. Everything we offer is provided completely free of charge.
Our culture and values
For over 25 years, our work has significantly improved children's educational outcomes and social prospects. We believe in the power of long-term, tailored support to unlock creativity and confidence in every child. Our approach boosts self-esteem, pride in learning and essential life skills.
Scene & Heard is led by CEO and Artistic Director Rosalind Paul MBE, who oversees creative output, programme delivery, pastoral care and volunteer coordination. She is supported by a core team of three full-time staff and a network of over 350 volunteer theatre professionals. We foster a warm, collaborative culture where creativity, care and children’s voices are at the centre of everything we do.
We make decisions together as a team, with input from children, parents, schools, community partners and our board of trustees. Graduates of our programme—our young ambassadors—also help shape our future work.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
Scene & Heard is committed to equal opportunity in all areas of its work. All individuals will be treated in a fair and equal manner and in accordance with the law regardless of gender, marital status, race, religion, colour, age, disability or sexual orientation. We value the diversity of our community and actively welcome individuals from all backgrounds to be part of our team.
