About us
Who we are
Sheffield Community Bike Project is dedicated to promoting cycling as a sustainable, low-carbon alternative to motor travel, helping to reduce emissions and improve air quality in Sheffield. Through our drop-in maintenance workshops, and maintenance training, we make cycling more accessible and inclusive, ensuring that everyone - regardless of background, income, or experience - has the opportunity to benefit from cycling.
The project began at the grassroots in August 2022, when a group of like-minded people came together to share their love of cycling and bike maintenance skills with the community. Since then it has developed into a fully fledged DIY cycle maintenance workshop in the town centre, with three open sessions running every week, and regular sessions for groups underrepresented in the cycling world. We are working towards expanding our opening times to five days in the near future.
Pay-As-You-Can Bike Maintenance Sessions
We run regular bike maintenance sessions where people can learn to fix and maintain their own bikes with guidance from experienced volunteers. These sessions operate on a pay-as-you-can basis, ensuring that cost is not a barrier to participation. Our aim is to give people the confidence and skills to keep their bikes in good working order, promoting independence and encouraging more regular cycling.
Refurbishing and Selling Donated Bikes
We collect and refurbish donated bikes, giving them a new lease of life and reducing waste. These bikes are sold at affordable prices, with discounts available for those on low incomes to ensure that cost is not a barrier to owning a bike. By recycling bikes and parts, we help reduce landfill contributions while increasing access to sustainable transport.
Inclusive and Supportive Environment
We are committed to fostering an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported. We recognise that some people may face additional barriers to cycling, so we offer dedicated drop-in sessions for women and the LGBTQ+ community. These sessions provide a safe and inclusive space to learn bike maintenance, meet others, and build confidence in cycling.
We currently have 80 volunteers within our community, ~50 of which we count as regular volunteers.
