About us

Who we are

We are a friendly, inclusive parish church at the heart of Tufnell Park, London. Our doors are open to all, as we journey together in faith, hope, and love. Whoever you are, whatever your background, you are welcome here.

St George’s is based in Tufnell Park, in the London Borough of Islington.  The immediate area is residential, although we are close to the busy town centre area of  Holloway Road.  There are two primary schools in the parish and a number of housing estates. The church is situated near to the former Holloway Prison site, which will soon be home to around 2,000 additional residents.

We have high levels of economic disparity in our community, with many people struggling with the cost of living, especially children, older people and people with disabilities.

Our congregation is diverse and growing. Most people live locally and we have a number of families with younger children.  We usually have around 30 adults and 10 children with us on a Sunday morning, drawn from a worshipping community of around 100 people.

We have a good mix amongst the adult congregation, with some people who have been coming for decades and others who are new to the area.

People are involved in the life of the church, and give generously of their time to support the services and activities.

We have an active programme of activities – with a Holy Communion service on Sunday; Morning Prayer on Wednesdays; Bubble Church once a month and seasonal groups during Lent and Advent.

The Vicarage hosts Open House on Tuesday nights, where people come together to share a meal and one another’s company.  We run a Wellbeing Café on Wednesdays, which includes activities, seated exercise and a lunch prepared from surplus food.

On Thursdays we have a stay and play session for under 5s and their parents and carers.

On alternate Saturdays we run a Sensory Drop in for children with additional needs.

We also run ad hoc activities such as a pancake party, fireworks party, carols at the pub etc, and once or twice a term we run a ReStart party, where people can bring electrical items to be repaired by volunteers.

Our culture and values

St George’s is part of the Inclusive Church network, and seeks to recognise Christ in Community, valuing the unique gift of each person. We appreciate creativity in worship, enjoy learning from the Bible and sharing Holy Communion together weekly, and seek to follow Jesus authentically. We draw on a wide range of traditions in the Church, with worship that spans traditional hymns, contemporary worship songs, Iona, Taizé, children’s action songs and more. We have a focus on environmental stewardship and have a Silver Eco Church award.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

St George’s is governed by the Parochial Church Council (PCC) — a group of elected church members responsible for overseeing our finances, buildings, and strategic direction.

The PCC is committed to the principle of equal opportunity in employment.

Accordingly, we will ensure that recruitment, selection, training, development and promotion procedures result in no job applicant or employee receiving unlawful  less favourable treatment on the grounds of race, colour, nationality, ethnic or national origin, religion or belief, disability, age, trade union membership or non-membership, sex, sexual orientation, marital status, or being a part-time or fixed term worker.  Our objective is to ensure that individuals are selected, promoted and otherwise treated solely on the basis of their relevant aptitudes, skills and abilities.

The PCC have the primary responsibility for successfully meeting these objectives by:

  • not discriminating in the course of employment against employees or job applicants

  • not inducing or attempting to induce others to practise unlawful discrimination; and

  • bringing to the attention of employees that they will be subject to action under the Disciplinary and Dismissal Procedure for discrimination of any kind.
