About us
Who we are
Sustenance run a weekly food club and community kitchen at Concordia Hall in St Leonards/Hastings offering fresh meals and grocery bags/boxes to individuals and families navigating food insecurity- largely using surplus food collected from local supermarkets and businesses.
We provide an important life line for families who by no fault of their own are struggling in a world of rising living expenses.
Our culture and values
Sustenance can only do what it does thanks to the incredible volunteers who give their time each week to make a real difference in their community and to help tackle the UK’s growing food‑waste crisis.
Our work starts long before the cooking begins. Volunteers head out to collect surplus food from local supermarkets, greengrocers, restaurants, and producers, rescuing perfectly good ingredients that would otherwise go to waste. Back at the hall, others prep and cook meals, set up our long communal tables, and carefully sort and curate up to 70 shopping bags for our members.
Every week, this team transforms an empty community hall into a warm, welcoming dining space filled with good food and good company. It’s a big operation, but our volunteers rise to it with generosity, humour, and heart.
If you’re passionate about reducing food waste, supporting your neighbours, and being part of something genuinely uplifting, we’d love to welcome you to the team.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
The core principles which underpin our objectives are inclusiveness, tolerance and fairness as they are central to our operational practices as an organisation and are in line with statutory requirements as laid down in the Equalities Act 2010
