Tumaini Junior School is located in the town of Karatu, about 100 miles outside the city of Arusha in northeast Tanzania. Tumaini Junior School came from the vision of Modest Bayo. Recognizing the importance of teaching the English language in primary school to help train the future leaders of Tanzania, Bayo set out to create a schoolwhere English is taught from kindergarten on. He founded the school with his personal savings and used his own home to accomodate the first class of 167 children. Bayo's goal, now realized, was to expand Tumaini's facilities to meet the needs of future students from nursery to the 7th grade. Tumaini Junior School is currently celebrating it's 10 year anniversary with over 700 students currently enrolled! Tanzania Education Corporation (TEC) began working to support Tumaini Junior School in 2009. TEC, a Boston based non profit, supports Tumaini with students sponsorship, securing funding for much-needed construction projects, and providing Tumaini with volunteers.
