The British Institute for the Study of Iraq (Gertrude Bell Memorial) - BISI was founded in 1932 in memory of the renowned archaeologist and explorer, Gertrude Bell. A registered UK Charity, BISI is dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of Iraq's history, society and culture. We do this through public lectures and events, books and journals (including the journal IRAQ published by Cambridge University Press) and grants. BISI's Visiting Iraqi Scholarship programme was established in 2005 in order to assist Iraqis in the rebuilding of their cultural heritage. Since then, we have sponsored over 30 Iraqi scholars and heritage professionals to come to the UK for bespoke training and research projects.
BISI is a small, friendly organisation, governed by a Council whose members are mainly academics with expertise in ancient and modern Iraq. Its staff are supported by a pool of dedicated volunteers. The role of Development Co-ordinator is an exciting chance to help us to expand our existing programme of research and education about Iraq.
