About us
Who we are
The British Institute of Human Rights (BIHR) is the UK’s dedicated Human Rights Act (HRA) practice and policy charity. Our mission is to champion the HRA as a practical tool for everyday justice — enabling people, communities, public bodies, and policymakers to embed human rights across law, policy, and public services.
We work across five key areas where rights matter most in daily life: health, care, education, housing, and welfare. Our approach is grounded in law, powered by lived and practitioner experience, and focused on practical, systemic change.
At a time when the Human Rights Act and European Convention on Human Rights face unprecedented political pressure, our work to secure and safeguard these vital protections has never been more important.
Our culture and values
BIHR’s strategy is underpinned by our being:
Grounded in human rights law: The Human Rights Act (HRA) and European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) are central to all our work, guiding our practical change work and our national advocacy and influencing.
Experience-informed: Lived and practitioner experience is key to our work; communities and civil society are active partners, not simply recipients or beneficiaries of our work.
Evidence‑based: We combine legal expertise with authentic evidence and stories of rights in practice.
Collaborative: We work across sectors and networks to avoid siloed approaches, sharing knowledge and resources.
Proactive and resilient: We anticipate threats and opportunities to the HRA/ECHR and respond strategically.
Sustainable: We prioritise organisational capacity, governance, and long‑term funding to maintain impact.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
BIHR exists to o champion the Human Rights Act (HRA) as a practical tool for everyday justice. Promoting equality and valuing diversity are therefore fundamental to our mission, and we are committed to providing equal opportunities and to avoiding unlawful discrimination in our employment and services. We are also committed to ensuring that the work environment is free of harassment and bullying., and we expect our staff, board members, volunteers, and others associated with or representing BIHR, to treat respectfully all those they interact with during their work for the charity, and in a way that upholds their human rights.
