About us

Who we are

The Whitechapel Centre

Vision

To be an excellent, independent local charity working in partnership to end homelessness, social exclusion and housing poverty in our communities.

Mission

To prevent and resolve homelessness, social exclusion and housing-related poverty by providing practical, tailored support so that each person can find and sustain a home and achieve their potential.

Values

The work of The Whitechapel Centre is underpinned by the following core values which drive all aspects of our work and governance.  We are:

 ·         Passionate - we have a strong belief in people and their potential.  However challenging a person’s circumstances, we will stick by and work with them to improve their situation. We go the extra mile and never give up on anyone.

 ·         Inclusive - we are an open, inclusive organisation, working with the most excluded people in our community.  We challenge discrimination in all forms in order to achieve fair access and inclusion for all.  Equality and fairness underpin everything we do.

 ·         Community-driven - we are an independent charity which utilises local resources to improve the health and social wellbeing of the communities we serve and to make a positive impact through the employment and volunteering opportunities we provide.  We are proud to be local.

 ·         Innovative - we look for creative ways to achieve our goals by challenging the conventional and influencing policy and practice.  We are imaginative and forward thinking.

 ·         Person Centred – we promote active participation and feedback and seek to empower people with the knowledge, skills, confidence and resources they need to make informed choices and to identify their own solutions whenever possible.  We do things with, not to, people.

 ·         Accountable:  we listen to the people who use our services, local communities and partners and strive to deploy resources efficiently and effectively so as to best meet need.  We take responsibility and hold ourselves accountable to all our stakeholders.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

We believe that The Whitechapel Centre has much to learn from diverse cultures and perspectives and that people with different backgrounds and attitudes bring fresh ideas and perceptions to our organisation.

We aim to draw upon the widest range of experiences in order to listen to, and meet, the needs of our service users, staff and partners.

We believe that everyone has the right to be treated with respect and have equal access to opportunities. We are committed to addressing discrimination and promoting inclusion, equality and diversity in the provision of services and employment.  To achieve this, our diversity policy will embrace key elements of best practice in employment and service delivery relating to:

·         addressing inequality;

·         recognising and valuing difference;

·         creating an inclusive, skilled and diverse workforce;

·         meeting the needs of an increasingly diverse population; and

·         acting in accordance with legislation.
