About us

Who we are

At The Wisdom Hospice Charity, we believe that everyone facing a life-limiting illness deserves to live every day to the fullest. For over 40 years, we have been the fundraising heart behind the Wisdom Hospice, helping to fund specialist palliative care for patients and support for their families across Medway and Swale.

Our retail shops aren’t just places to buy pre-loved items—they are vital community hubs, the public face of our charity, and a powerhouse driving the funds needed to keep our care services running. When you work in a Wisdom Hospice shop, your daily sales directly fund comfort, dignity, and care for people when they need it most.

Our culture and values

We pride ourselves on a culture that is as warm and welcoming as our shops. In Wisdom Hospice Retail, we blend business savvy with deep empathy.

  • Compassion at our Core: We bring kindness to everything we do—whether we’re supporting a donor dropping off a loved one’s belongings or helping a customer find a hidden treasure.

  • Community-Driven: Our shops belong to the neighborhoods they serve. We thrive on building strong relationships with locals, regulars, and our incredible team of volunteers.

  • Sustainability & Creativity: We love giving second-hand items a second life. We encourage our retail teams to be creative with visual merchandising and to treat their shop like their own unique business.

  • Inclusion & Teamwork: Our shops run on a unique mix of paid staff and dedicated volunteers. We value everyone’s voice, celebrate diverse backgrounds, and lift each other up.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

At The Wisdom Hospice Charity, equality, diversity, and inclusion are not just checkboxes—they are core to who we are. Our mission is to support a diverse community during some of life’s most profound moments, and we believe our workforce should reflect that same beautiful diversity.

We are fully committed to creating an environment where every employee and volunteer feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their authentic selves to work.

Our Approach to Fairness and Anti-Discrimination

  • Inclusive Recruitment: We actively work to remove bias from our hiring processes. We recruit purely on merit, capability, and potential, ensuring a level playing field for all applicants regardless of age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage or civil partnership, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex, or sexual orientation.

  • Zero Tolerance for Discrimination: We maintain a safe, welcoming working environment. Bullying, harassment, or discrimination of any kind—whether from colleagues, volunteers, or members of the public—is completely unacceptable and is met with decisive action.

  • Equal Growth and Opportunities: We ensure that all retail staff have equal access to training, development, and career progression. Your success with us is shaped entirely by your skills, dedication, and the value you bring to our team.

  • Championing Diverse Perspectives: Our retail shops thrive because of the unique stories, backgrounds, and talents of our staff and volunteers. We celebrate these differences, knowing they help us connect more deeply with the local communities we serve.

  • Reasonable Adjustments: We are a supportive employer. If you require adjustments during the application process or within your workplace to help you perform at your best, we will work collaboratively with you to put those in place.

By joining our retail team, you are joining an organization where fairness is championed, individuality is celebrated, and everyone is united by a shared purpose of doing good.
