About us

Who we are

Yaarah Schools is a small independent charity run entirely by volunteers determined to throw a learning lifeline to children in the remote villages in Ghana. The idea started when our CEO, Maire, visited the village of Adaklu Aziedukope She saw that school tuition only took place when the weather permitted because the school was nothing more than a simple shelter, offering shade from the sun but not protection from the rain. Pupils came to school – when it’s open – carrying their chairs in one hand and books in the other. Maire set about changing this. Through sheer determination she raised enough funds to build a school - providng children with a place where they can have lessons and learn through play, regardless of the weather. £2,500 can build and equip one classroom and allow up to 30 children to have a permanent shelter in which to learn. Yaarah Schools works collaboratively with the local villagers and involves the whole community with the building project. There are many skilled labourers in Adaklu Aziedukope and by using these and others' skills to build the school, the project really did belong to the community. We at Yaarah Schools simply provided them with the materials that they can’t afford to buy. The school was completed in 2011, and the school has become the heart of the community in Adaklu Aziedukope. Yaarah Schools is now embarking on a second school in Tali Zoolanyili. To date, three classrooms are near completion.
