Learn to Love to Read is a small, Wandsworth-based literacy charity. We started our work in March 2014 as a project run by a local church. We were registered as a charity in October 2017. We are a small friendly team, with all staff working from home.
Literacy is proven to have enormous impact on children’s life opportunities and outcomes. And it has become more and more evident that Covid will have an unequal impact. A report released in March 2021 indicates more than 200,000 pupils will move from primary school to secondary school this autumn without being able to read properly. The findings show the impact of lockdown on learning, with the number of children struggling with literacy rising by 30,000 over the past year.
Our early years work prepares children to start school ready to read. Our reading volunteers offer individual support to children who are finding learning to read challenging. Our parent training equips and encourages parents to support their children's reading at home. We work on-stie at partner primary schools and also virtually via Zoom.
