About us

Who we are

We are here to support anyone who has served in the Armed Forces, or who has done National Service, and who is now living with significant sight loss.

We help blind ex-Service men and women lead independent and fulfilling lives by supporting them with our in-depth expertise, experience and full range of services. We give veterans much-needed support to adjust to sight loss, overcome the challenges of blindness and enjoy daily life. Our charity has been offering physical and emotional support to vision-impaired veterans since 1915.

When Blind Veterans UK was founded In 1915, our mission was to help soldiers blinded during the First World War. Today we offer lifelong support to Armed Forces and National Service veterans - no matter what the cause of their sight loss, and regardless of how long they Served. We help blind and vision impaired ex-Service personnel regain their independence and discover life after sight loss.

Our vision: our ultimate goal
We believe that no one who has served our country should have to battle blindness alone.

Our mission: how we'll make our vision happen
All blind veterans should have access to the finest quality of services to help them discover life beyond sight loss.

Our values

We're committed
Our veterans are with us for life. We commit ourselves to helping them prosper and we want to inspire commitment in our supporters too.

We're courageous
It takes courage to live life as a blind veteran. We want to reflect their approach to life in our own attitudes and brave decisions.

We're collaborative
At Blind Veterans UK, we get the best results when we form active partnerships to achieve our vision. We collaborate with our veterans and between departments. We also build partnerships with people and organisations who can give us their support.

We're resourceful
Our time, facilities and funding are all limited, so we always look for ways to use them well. We have the biggest impact when we use our resources intelligently and effectively. We keep in mind that our money is only loaned to us by donors to help us support blind veterans.

Blind Veterans UK was founded in 1915 by Sir Arthur Pearson to provide rehabilitation, training and lifelong support to those blinded in the First World War. Since then we have helped over 15,000 ex-Service men and women who have lost their sight.
