About us

Who we are

The British Hen Welfare Trust is a small, national charity that re-homes commercial laying hens, educates the public about how they can make a difference to hen welfare, and encourages support for the British egg industry. Its ultimate aim is to see consumers and food manufacturers buying only UK produced free-range eggs, resulting in a strong British egg industry where all commercial laying hens enjoy a good quality life.

Founded 12 years ago the BHWT has re-homed over 665,000 hens!We work closely with our team of 800 volunteers around the UK who help us to re-home on average 50,000 hens a year.  The re-homing logistics, marketing and fundraising team and Founder are based at 'Hen Central' in the heart  of Devon - we are a small, friendly team of around 10 employees.

The charity is fast-growing and with hen keeping so popular and awareness of hen welfare increasing all the time its an exciting place to work.  We are currently fundraising for our first permanent re-homing centre, based at Hen Central and have lots of other exciting projects in the pipeline.

The BHWT counts Jamie Oliver, Amanda Holden, Jimmy Doherty and Pam Ayres as its Patrons.
