About us
Who we are
Founded in 2015, Camden Disability Action is a pan-disability, user-led organisation pressing for the removal of barriers that disable people with conditions/impairments.
To achieve this, we provide Disabled people with advice and advocacy support while also supporting them to lead the way in re-shaping services, activities, attitudes and mainstream culture so the borough works for all of us, no matter our differences.
Our charity is a members-based Disabled People’s Organisation (DPO), meaning we are run and led by Disabled trustees, staff and members.
Seventy five per cent (75%) of our 11 trustees are Disabled people, as are most of our 12 staff members including our Chief Executive Officer (CEO). All our work is underpinned by a commitment to the social model of disability and informed by direct, first-hand experience of disability discrimination.
Our services and activities break down into three areas:
Supporting Disabled people to get our voices heard, challenge discrimination and lead the way in shaping service provision so that it becomes fully inclusive of Disabled people.
Working with organisations – the offer breaks down into our room hire service and our work to assist organisations to become fully inclusive of Disabled people
Supporting Disabled people with day-to-day living – our advice service is the main part of this
Our culture and values
Vision
We believe in a radically inclusive world where people with differences are never Disabled by the society in which they live.
Mission
We exist to enable the Disabled community and those most marginalised within it, to lead the way in building a Camden that works for everyone
Values
Leading by example: We believe in leading by example, by being role models and leaders
Radical and bold: We believe in being radical in our ideas and bold in our actions
Power and user involvement: The diverse members of Camden’s Disabled community, leading and co-producing everything the organisation does.
Prepared to challenge: We are prepared to challenge how society disables people with differences, using the social model of disability along with rights and community justice-based approaches.
Striving for real change: While we work to improve lives in the here and now, we also hold the firm belief, that longer term, structural change to our society is a very real possibility.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
CDA is committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and equitable workplace that reflects the communities we serve. We particularly welcome applications from Disabled people who are also from Black, Asian and other minoritised communities, LGBTQ+ people, and others who are underrepresented in the charity sector and leadership roles. We are also open to considering flexible working arrangements, including job shares, where this can support the successful delivery of the role.
