Classics for All (CfA) is a small national charity founded in 2010 to reverse the decline in the teaching of Classics (Latin, ancient Greek, ancient history, classical civilisation) in state schools. We have a passionate commitment to ensuring that pupils of all abilities and backgrounds have access to high quality education opportunities that are stimulating, rich and allow them to fulfil their potential. We consider that every child in the UK should have a chance to enjoy Classics. Sadly, Classics education in the UK is not a level playing field: only 25% of state schools teach classical subjects, compared to 75% of independent schools.
CfA is the only organisation that offers both primary and secondary schools comprehensive advice and support on developing Classics. We work with many high profile national partners, including the National Union of Teachers, universities, the Classical Association and publishers to promote and develop our work. We have developed 12 regional classics networks across England, Wales and Scotland, each of which is reaching out to more schools in their area.
We have grown from one paid staff member - the Executive Director - to a .8fte Programme Director and .8fte Administrator, and we operate out of a small office in Covent Garden. Our schools programme determines our fundraising priorities, so we all communicate regularly to make sure we use this most effectively. Our work is supported by an excellent Salesforce CRM system to track where we are with the schools programme and with all of our donor activity. We work hard but with good humour and are supported by a friendly group of trustees and committee members. Not all of us are classicists, but everyone is passionate about expanding horizons for state school pupils. Our mission and purpose are clear, with strategies in place for achieving our targets each year.
