Innovations for Learning (IfL) is a small but growing charity, which is working to ensure that every child in the UK acquires the literacy skills they need for their educational attainment and to fulfil their potential. Our core programme, TutorMate, which uses a unique, online platform to pair corporate volunteers with children in need of reading support, has been proven to improve the literacy outcomes and reading enjoyment of young children from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Our model is to partner with local and national businesses which recruit their own employees as volunteer tutors and provide funding for the programme. TutorMate pairs struggling early readers (5- to 7-year-olds) with adult volunteers who use a bespoke internet platform and a voice connection to link – from their workplace or home – to a dedicated classroom laptop for 30 minutes a week, during the school day, over an entire academic year. Up to ten children in each Year 1 or Year 2 class participate, giving the programme a reach and scale that no school is able to achieve with parent or community volunteers.
We have set ourselves an ambitious target of supporting 4,000 children by 2024 and this role will help us to achieve this by raising awareness of the TutorMate programme, particularly with a corporate audience.
