Music In Detention brings immigration detainees together with people living in the surrounding community to create powerful music. This experience promotes mutual understanding, giving motivation and hope.
In our music workshops, detainees and local people work creatively together. Guided by specialist musicians, they learn to express their personal stories, sharing thoughts and emotions through music and lyrics. We help detainees get stronger inside and gives them courage for the future. We make positive human connections between them and people in the local area who also have problems in their lives. Making music builds their confidence and they learn from each other’s life experience. This work overcomes stigma and develops informed attitudes about immigration.
MID helps people who are hidden and ignored to make their voices heard. Given the chance to express their emotions and experience, they create arresting music of raw emotional power, combining an extraordinary range of musical cultures and genres.
