About Papyrus Prevention of Young Suicide

PAPYRUS Vision

A society which speaks openly about suicide and has the resources to help young people who may have suicidal thoughts

PAPYRUS Mission

We exist to reduce the number of young people who take their own lives by shattering the stigma around suicide and equipping young people and their communities with the skills to recognise and respond to suicidal behaviour.

Beliefs that guide our thinking:

  • PAPYRUS believes that many young suicides are preventable
  • PAPYRUS believes that no young person should suffer alone with thoughts or feelings of hopelessness
  • PAPYRUS believes that no one should have to go through the heartbreak of losing a loved one to suicide
  • PAPYRUS believes that everyone can play a role in preventing young suicide.

PAPYRUS was founded in 1997 by a mother, Jean Kerr, from Lancashire following the death of her son to suicide. Gradually other parents all bereaved by suicide began to join her in the belief that something positive could come from their own tragedy.

Since 1997, PAPYRUS has continued to listen to and learn from the experiences of those touched by young suicide. Today, PAPYRUS remains dedicated to offering support directly to young people at risk of suicide, their parents and any one concerned about a young person they know, through training and education, campaigns and direct support through HOPELineUK, our national helpline.

HOPELineUK is a confidential support and advice service for:

  • Young people under the age of 35 who may be having thoughts of suicide
  • Anyone concerned a young person may be having thoughts of suicide.

A HOPELineUK advisor will hear about the things that are happening in your life that are contributing to your thoughts of suicide and provide advice about how you can cope with your thoughts of suicide, or where you can access help. You can also speak to our HOPELineUK advisors to get advice about how to start a conversation about suicide with someone you are concerned about, and how to best support them.
