About us

Who we are

Possability People is a Brighton-based disability charity supporting disabled people, older people, and anyone with an impairment or long-term health condition to live independently, with dignity and without prejudice.

Founded in 1981 as a user-led organisation, we’ve grown into a trusted provider of high-quality services that help people navigate daily life, stay connected, and feel in control. Our work is rooted in the social model of disability, and we champion equal rights and meaningful choice for the people we support.

We run services across Brighton & Hove, East and West Sussex, and into Surrey, offering everything from advice and information to social care support, employment services, and volunteering opportunities. We’re also known for influencing policy and practice locally and nationally by sharing lived experience and insight with decision-makers.

Our funding comes from a mix of statutory grants, fundraising, donations, and income from services — all of which is reinvested back into the charity to support some of the most marginalised people in our communities.

As a disability charity, we particularly welcome applications from disabled people, and we’re always happy to discuss flexible working options.

What it’s like to work here

At Possability People, you’ll be part of a small, friendly, and passionate team that values collaboration, creativity, and getting things done. We’re ambitious about the difference we make for disabled people and communities, and everyone here plays a part in shaping that impact.

We work hard, but we support each other. You’ll have autonomy to make decisions, space to bring new ideas, and the chance to see the tangible results of your work. We embrace flexible working wherever possible and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone can thrive.

Here, your voice matters. Whether you’re leading a project, delivering a service, or shaping organisational priorities. We celebrate achievements, encourage personal development, and take pride in a culture where colleagues, volunteers, and service users are respected and valued.

Our culture and values

At Possability People, everything we do is guided by our commitment to empowering disabled people and communities. We believe in a social model of disability, treating everyone with dignity, respect, and fairness, and ensuring that the people we support have a real voice in decisions affecting their lives.

We work collaboratively across teams, valuing insight, creativity, and practical solutions. Our approach is strengths-based: we focus on what people can do and how we can enable them, rather than what they cannot. We take pride in being responsive and adaptive, whether that’s innovating new services, improving processes, or responding to community needs.

Transparency, accountability, and integrity underpin all our decisions — whether managing funding, delivering services, or representing the charity externally. We embrace inclusion, actively seeking to remove barriers for both staff and service users, and fostering a culture where diversity is valued and supported.

In practice, this means open communication, collaborative problem-solving, and empowering colleagues to take initiative. We celebrate successes, learn from challenges, and aim to create an environment where everyone feels supported, informed, and able to make a meaningful contribution.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

At Possability People, fairness, equality, and inclusion are central to how we operate. We have a clear Equal Opportunities policy, ensuring recruitment, development, and progression are based on merit, free from bias or discrimination.

We actively promote a workplace where diversity is valued and everyone is treated with dignity and respect. This includes adapting roles and providing reasonable adjustments so all colleagues can thrive.

We work closely with partner organisations representing different communities to provide holistic, joined-up support for service users. By embedding fairness, accessibility, and collaborative practice into everything we do, we create an environment where staff, partners, and service users are supported, empowered, and valued.
