About us
Who we are
Our small, dedicated educational charity, Real Action, was founded in 1998. Based in Mozart Street, in the Queen’s Park ward of Westminster - with the country’s highest level of child deprivation - it effectively addresses the educational needs of a disadvantaged inner-city community, beset by the criminality of child gangs who roamed the Mozart Estate in north Westminster – and were found to be illiterate.
Our goal is to break the connection between family disadvantage and educational disadvantage. Our community-led educational charity breaks the link. At the Butterfly Saturday Reading School, attended since 1999 by thousands of local children, we get wonderful results. The average reading age gain of the children who come flocking to us is normally a year in an average 20 hours of our lively teaching. It's done by volunteers! It's fun. And it's gratifying. That's what the children find, too.
We have two Butterfly Saturday Reading Schools now, effectively serving other deprived communities in the inner west London zone. Our Butterfly graduates tend to go to university, we find. They normally forgo the street life.
Our culture and values
Butterfly Saturday Reading School aims to provide 2 hours term time free literacy classes for children from disadvantaged background. We aim to provide an environment where every child learns, feel valued and where everyone can work together to create:
