The Student Christian Movement is a small charity working in England, Wales and Scotland. Each year SCM engages with hundreds of students and supporters, including Chaplaincies and Churches.
Our Mission and Core Purpose
We are a movement of students, past and present, responding to the call of Jesus to follow him and show the love of God on campus, in our communities, and in the world.
We come together as an ecumenical and inclusive community, fostering unity in diversity and exploring faith through worship, discussion and intentional action.
SCM’s vision is that every student can find a vibrant, open and inclusive Christian community, where they can explore faith and be inspired to put faith into action.
Our Core Aims
Drawing on scripture, our lived experience, theology and church traditions, we aim to critically engage with our faith to learn and grow as Christians.
We believe faith and justice are inseparable. We aim to be a movement for change, participating in God’s kingdom of peace, justice and hope.
We seek to create inclusive communities where all are welcome and valued. Equally respecting differences in age, sex, disability, denomination, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, political affiliation, socio-economic background or belief. SCM aims to take this a step further, exploring what it means to celebrate our diversity, championing each other for our differences not just our similarities.
We are founded in the spirit of ecumenism and therefore aim to be a movement that brings students together from different denominations and traditions, building physical and virtual communities.
Working for SCM
SCM has a small but dynamic and friendly staff team based in our office in Birmingham, with Regional Development Workers based in key cities within their regions such as Salford, Leeds and Glasgow. As a student-led organisation, our board of Trustees is made up of students and recent graduates. The board are supportive and enthusiastic, and are committed to seeing the movement grow.
Staff enjoy the supportive working environment and the varied nature of the day to day workload. The team are motivated by the impact of SCM's work, which can be seen through their interactions with the students that SCM supports.
SCM offers a generous Annual Leave allowance of 35 days per year including bank holidays, enhanced Sick Pay and enhanced Maternity, Paternity, Adoption and Shared Parental Leave pay. SCM also offers flexible working, and the possibility of working from home.
