About us
Who we are
Temwa is an international development charity based in Bristol, UK, with a deep commitment to supporting remote, underserved communities in Northern Malawi. Founded in 2003, we have built long-term partnerships with local people to address the root causes of poverty and climate vulnerability. Our approach is holistic and community-led, focusing on areas such as sustainable agriculture, forestry, education, health, and livelihoods. We don’t believe in one-off interventions—we work alongside communities to create lasting change and build resilience, enabling these communities to shape their own futures. Our strong presence in Malawi, with a dedicated team of over 25 staff members on the ground, ensures our programmes are locally informed and truly impactful. In the UK, we connect with communities to raise awareness, fundraise, and build partnerships that fuel this transformational work.
Our culture and values
At Temwa, our culture is built on openness, integrity, compassion, and collaboration. We are a values-driven organisation that places high importance on authentic relationships, both within our team and with the communities we serve. We prioritise inclusivity, mutual respect, and professionalism, and we are committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels empowered to contribute their unique perspective. Decisions are made through listening and learning, and we value the lived experiences of those most affected by the issues we work to address. Whether in the UK or Malawi, our teams are united by a shared belief in community-driven development and the power of people working together to create change.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
At Temwa, we are deeply committed to creating a workplace where everyone feels respected, valued, and able to thrive. We actively promote equality, celebrate diversity, and oppose all forms of discrimination across our organisation. Our recruitment, retention, and progression practices are designed to ensure fairness, and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, particularly those who are underrepresented in the international development sector. We are working hard to become an actively anti-racist organisation and are continually learning how to build a more inclusive culture, both in our UK and Malawi teams. We believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce leads to stronger ideas, better decision-making, and greater impact for the communities we serve. All staff are encouraged and supported to bring their full selves to work, and we are committed to providing reasonable adjustments where needed to ensure equity of opportunity for all.
