About us
Who we are
White Ribbon Alliance UK (WRA UK) is dedicated to transforming sexual and reproductive healthcare by centring wellbeing, human rights, and equity. Our mission is to eradicate gender-based violence and ensure trauma-informed, culturally sensitive care is accessible to all, especially those marginalised by race, ethnicity, disability, gender identity, age, and socioeconomic status
Central to our approach is our Ask Listen Act (ALA) methodology, a community-driven model focused on actively seeking and listening to the voices of affected populations and taking strategic action based on their lived experiences. This approach ensures that all our initiatives are rooted in genuine, community-defined needs and priorities.
WRA UK work to reduce harm and inequity in sexual and reproductive health through advancements in trauma-informed care, safeguarding mental and physical wellbeing, improving access to gynaecological and maternity care, sex education, and advocating for policy reforms. Our advocacy targets systemic changes, such as embedding trauma-informed practices within NHS maternity services and influencing maternal mental health policies.
Through evidence-based education, strategic partnerships, and community-driven advocacy, we empower individuals, communities, and healthcare providers to create lasting, equitable improvements in maternity care. Central to our work is amplifying the voices of those most impacted by healthcare inequities, ensuring they are at the forefront of driving meaningful change.
Our culture and values
Our values and culture
White Ribbon Alliance UK is a small organisation doing complex, high-impact work. How we work matters as much as what we do.
We are grounded in human rights, social justice, and accountability. Our work is informed by lived experience, evidence, and a clear understanding of power, inequality, and systemic harm. We are not neutral about injustice, and we expect people working with us to be comfortable naming it.
We value equity, inclusion, and anti-racism in practice, not just in principle. For us, diversity is not about representation alone. It is about who is listened to, whose knowledge is valued, and how decisions are made. We expect everyone working with us to reflect on their own position and to approach difference with humility and curiosity.
Our culture is collaborative, reflective, and practical. We work closely with partners, communities, and each other. We are honest about capacity, clear about boundaries, and focused on doing work that is meaningful rather than performative. We prefer plain language over jargon and progress over perfection.
Because we are a small team, we value people who are thoughtful, organised, and self-directed, and who can work with ambiguity without needing constant direction. We care about kindness and respect, but we are also direct with each other. We believe that good work depends on trust.
We actively encourage applications from people who are under-represented in the charity and human rights sectors, including people from racially minoritised communities, disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, and those with lived experience relevant to our work.
We prioritise inclusivity and lived experience, and welcome volunteers from underrepresented and marginalised communities.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
White Ribbon Alliance UK is built on intersectional feminist values. We know that sexual and reproductive health outcomes are shaped by racism, sexism, ableism, class, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of structural injustice. Our work — and our volunteer programme — is designed to challenge these barriers and centre the voices of those most affected.
We are committed to:
-
Inclusive recruitment: We actively encourage applications from people in underrepresented communities, including but not limited to Black, Asian, disabled, chronically ill, LGBTQ+, and retired individuals.
-
Accessibility: We make adjustments wherever possible to ensure volunteers can take part fully, whether that’s flexible scheduling, accessible formats, or alternative communication channels.
-
Respect and safety: All volunteers agree to our Code of Conduct, which sets out how we create safe, respectful, and inclusive spaces.
-
Equity in practice: We welcome volunteers with lived experience and value different ways of knowing and contributing. Your insights and perspectives are not only respected — they shape our work.
By joining us, you become part of a diverse community united by a shared belief in justice and a commitment to action.
