The Ruskin Mill Trust Group operates five colleges and associated residential provisions, as well as independent specialist schools. Through our research led method of Practical Skills Therapeutic Education we provide innovative and experiential education for children and young people with special learning needs, developed out of the inspiration of Rudolf Steiner, William Morris and John Ruskin.
Key elements of the roles are:

A flexible approach to work is essential; some evenings, weekends and overnight stays may be a requirement of this role (with appropriate notice).

About the role
This vacancy is for a University Access Officer to work in one or two schools in the West Midlands area; exact school location(s) to be confirmed at interview. Our schools are shown on a mapThe Access Project schools on our website. Access to own transport or reliable transport would be ideal.
The University Access Officer works with school staff at all levels, volunteer tutors, and with the rest of The Access Project’s team to ensure that the delivery of the programme is optimised.
Role responsibilities
- Engage with students in school and enrol them onto the programme
- Match students with volunteer tutors
- Monitor student attendance to tutorials and devise innovative solutions to encourage attendance
- Assess student progress towards being able to make successful university applications
- Upload information onto the Salesforce database (training is provided)
- Monitor the impact of tutorials, and intervene as appropriate
- Build and manage relationships with volunteer tutors to ensure they have a positive experience of the programme
- Manage tutor relationships and attendance to tutorials through weekly monitoring of systems, emailing and making phone calls
- Work with school staff to ensure their cooperation and timely completion of activities contributing to the smooth running of the programme
- Chair and present at termly school meetings with Senior Management to report on programme progress.
- University Access Officers support the volunteering team by helping to deliver tutor training sessions, which take place on occasional Saturdays and weekday evenings (paid time off is provided).

About the role
This vacancy is for a University Access Officer to work in the West Midlands across up to 4 schools (maximum) along with working remotely; exact school location(s) to be confirmed at interview. Our schools are shown on a map of The Access Project schools on our website. Access to own transport or reliable transport would be ideal. The University Access Officer works with school staff at all levels, volunteers, and with the rest of The Access Project’s team to ensure that the delivery of the programme is optimised.
Role responsibilities
Some of our schools undertake our Accelerate model, which includes mentoring and coaching. Other schools also have tutoring included on our Accelerate Plus model. Depending on the model in the schools you are based in, role responsibilities will include:
Accelerate
- Engage with students in school and enrol them onto the programme
- Assess student progress towards being able to make successful university applications
- Upload information onto the Salesforce database (training is provided)
- Support the Volunteering team with the management of volunteer coaches to ensure they have a positive experience of the programme
- Work with school staff to ensure their cooperation and timely completion of activities contributing to the smooth running of the programme
- Chair and present at school meetings with Senior Management to report on programme progress.
- University Access Officers support the volunteering team by helping to deliver volunteer training sessions, and attending university site visits, which take place on occasional Saturdays and weekday evenings (paid time off is provided).

About the role
This vacancy is for a University Access Officer to work in London across up to 3 schools along with remote working. Our schools are shown on a map of The Access Project schools on our website.
The University Access Officer works with school staff at all levels, volunteers tutors, and with the rest of The Access Project’s team to ensure that the delivery of the programme is optimised.
Role responsibilities
Our schools undertake either our Gateway model, which includes mentoring and tutoring or our Accelerate model, which includes mentoring and coaching. Some Accelerate schools also have tutoring included on our Accelerate Plus model.
Depending on the model in the schools you are based in, role responsibilities will include:

As Finance Manager, you will be a key member of the Finance & Operations team. You will hold end-to-end responsibility for the finance function, from reconciliations to budgeting. Why Work for The Difference?
Schooling isn’t working for the children who need it most. Every week in England 109 children – equivalent to three full classrooms – are permanently excluded. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Since the pandemic, school suspensions have risen significantly, as has persistent absenteeism. 1 in 5 children are missing more than 10% of their time in school. Children who are excluded or persistently absent are much more likely to already be experiencing vulnerability or disadvantage. They are more likely to live in poverty, have additional learning needs, suffer mental health challenges, or experience a lack of safety outside school. Certain ethnicities are also disproportionately affected, notably Gypsy Roma Traveller and black Caribbean children.
Exclusion and high rates of absence can have a dramatic effect on life chances. These young people are more likely to drop out of education or employment, become vulnerable to long-term mental ill health, or be at risk of criminal exploitation. The Difference believes that children and young people deserve better and that the education system has to change.
Our Organisation
The Difference is a young education charity, founded to change the story on lost learning. By 2030, we want rates of exclusion and absence to be falling nationally and for schools to be better equipped to support all children, including those who may be vulnerable. The Difference was born out of a year of research into school exclusions with think-tank IPPR. This research identified a lack of inclusion expertise in schools and proposed a new leadership development programme to fill this gap. In 2018, Difference founder Kiran hired the team who took this idea from concept to reality, beginning work with our first schools.
The Difference is now a 22-strong team delivering multiple school leadership programmes, alongside a growing research and policy arm. The team is supported by our Youth Advisory Board, made up of young people who have experienced exclusion and who provide their expertise and insights on how school inclusion work should be done. This work is needed more than ever. Effects of COVID-19, coupled with the spiralling cost of living, have substantially increased levels of vulnerability. Schools serving excluded pupils face under-funding. The Difference has had excellent early impact but there is work ahead to capture this, share learning with schools and policy-makers, and grow our capacity to lower exclusions across England.

Training Link is a small charity with nearly 40 years’ experience of supporting people in Somers Town. We offer courses for adults to help people get a job or return to work, often after a long absence. Many of our learners are reluctant to go to a large adult education college where in practice they would receive little individual support in their learning; we offer a supportive, friendly learning environment where people feel comfortable and welcomed. Current classes include ESOL, IT and Maths. We also provide one to one sessions for those needing support around literacy.
Purpose of the role:
- To design and deliver new Green Learning programme for Training Link.
- To develop and run high quality, engaging, fun and interactive community-based environmental awareness classes and activities tailored to adult learners, including learners speaking English as a second language.
- To support residents in Somers Town in their journey to becoming cleaner and greener through community engagement, training and project delivery.
- To help Training Link team to positively engage and communicate with local residents and community leaders/ groups on climate emergency and positive actions.
- To create a welcoming, inclusive and positive learning environment.
- To enable those learners who wish to study further to gain an accredited qualification in Environmental Awareness, including environmental awareness in the workplace.
Key Responsibilities:
- To record and monitor learners’ attendance, progression and achievement.
- To contribute to the evaluation of teaching and learning to inform future planning, ensuring learner involvement in the process.
- To keep up to date with local and wider issues related to the Climate Emergency, from a lay person’s perspective.
- To liaise with the Director and participate in the appraisal process when required.
- To carry out duties with due regard to Training Link’s Equality and Diversity, Information, Governance, Data Protection, Safeguarding, and Health and Safety policies and procedures.
- To ensure that each learner provides personal information as required, and complete a learner agreement enrolment form and evaluation form at the end of the course. To keep a register for each session.
- To signpost learners to other courses, services and activities as appropriate
- To complete forms for the National Open College Network and any other external assessment body.
Essential Requirements for the Role
- Knowledge and Qualifications:
- Good understanding of the Climate Crisis and what can be done at a grass roots level to address it.
- An adult teaching or coaching qualification is desirable, or willingness to be working towards one.
- Ability to think creatively and use judgement, experience and initiative to solve problems
- An aptitude for collaboration and cross team working
- Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to engage and communicate effectively with all sections of the community, in a variety of situations, including the confidence to present to different and represent Training Link at events
- An understanding of the importance of diversity and inclusion.
- A can-do attitude
- Ideally a good knowledge of the Somers Town area (not essential but desirable)
Experience
- Experience of teaching adults on a paid or voluntary basis.
- Experience of community engagement with proven positive results
- Experience of managing local community projects supporting vulnerable adults
- Experience of working or volunteering in Somers Town is desirable
Skills and Abilities
- Ability to plan interesting lessons and activities appropriate to adult learners from a variety of cultural and educational backgrounds.
- Ability to develop effective teaching materials of a high standard and appropriate to the needs of learners.
- Ability to evaluate and track learner progress and set individual learning goals.
- Ability to assess learner work for the National Open College Network for learners who want an accredited qualification.
- Ability to use ICT and E-learning in teaching and course planning.
- Ability to maximise retention and achievement of learners.
- Effective communication and inter-personal skills.
- Flexibility to deliver learning in community venues in Camden, including some work in the evenings and on Saturdays.
- Ability to work effectively with Training Link staff and volunteers

You will be joining an established team of fundraisers made up of Senior Philanthropy Managers, Philanthropy Managers and Philanthropy Officers. You will have experience of delivering against financial targets, along with the ability to translate complex information into a compelling ask in both verbal and written form. As a Philanthropy Manager in DARO, you will be innovative, self-motivated, and take ownership of fundraising opportunities in this area and generate significant gifts for amazing philanthropic projects. You will have an enthusiasm for building relationships, the skill to interact with high-level donors and supporters, and the ability to showcase the sector-leading academic research to a range of audiences.
