Philanthropy Advisor

Fixed Term Contract until April 2027

About the role

We are seeking an effective and successful Philanthropy professional with a passion for international development, to take a pivotal role in enabling Christian Aid to fight global poverty, inequality and injustice in the year ahead, by supporting us to deliver against our ambitious income targets.

The post holder will be responsible for providing excellent stewardship to existing donors, and they will also be expected to proactively engage new prospects to grow Christian Aid's reach and impact, with a particular focus on securing 5 and 6-figure gifts. The post holder will manage a portfolio of supporters/potential supporters (primarily major donors but the portfolio also includes trusts and wealth advisors). The portfolio is predominantly based in Scotland but there are also a handful of supporters beyond this geographic focus.

The position will work closely with Scotland team colleagues, and will be part of the Philanthropy team which manages relationships with donors around the UK. The role will report into the Senior Philanthropy Advisor who is based in North England.

About you

With a solid track record of successful fundraising from Major Donors or in a related area of fundraising, you will have excellent relationship buildings skills and be a highly-effective communicator, with the ability to inspire and engage supporters. You will be able to produce high-quality proposals and reports. You will be well-practised in managing relationships based on trust and integrity and will be highly motivated, proactive and confident in engaging new prospects. Knowledge of international development and church structures would also be very helpful.

This role requires applicants to have the right to live and work in the country where this position is based and undertake the role that you have been offered. Contract: 3 years fixed term initially and subject to a 6 month probation review

Working Hours: Part Time - 20 hours per week – a flexible working pattern to include evenings and weekend working dependent upon projects

Salary: In the region of £16K (£28-30K FTE) dependent upon experience and qualifications

Annual Leave: 112 hours (28 FTE) including UK public Holidays

Job Purpose:

To encourage, support and enable the churches mission by building meaningful relationships with the local communities of Potters Bar and Shenley across all ages, especially the wide range of groups who already use our buildings. This will be achieved in partnership with Church folk, enabling and coordinating growth opportunities that reach out and explicitly share the good news of Jesus. This role is designed to strengthen both the community and the church through outreach activities that foster spiritual growth, the discipling of people and the promotion of the church’s values of compassion and inclusion.

Skills & Qualifications:

• Educated to A-level, Advanced GNVQ, level 3 NVQ, or equivalent
• A clear and evident personal Christian faith and knowledge of the Christian faith with a willingness to support spiritual exploration within the community.
• A track record of equipping churches for mission
• Experience in planning and leading community engagement and outreach with a range of ages
• Strong relationship-building skills, with the ability to engage and inspire people from diverse backgrounds and ages.
• Ability to work independently, manage budgets, and coordinate activities.
• Strong organisational skills and the ability to evaluate and adapt programs to meet community needs.
• Basic understanding of safeguarding principles (training will be provided).

Families Ministry: Connecting with parents, carers, and whole families, making church a welcoming place where everyone can explore faith together.

Stategic Leadership

• Developing a clear strategy for growing engagement across all three churches
• Identifying and developing volunteer leaders who'll carry the torch
• Thinking creatively about sustainability and long-term impact
• Finding innovative ways to ensure this ministry thrives beyond the initial funding period, this could include identifying grant opportunities, leading fundraising activities with our young people and families, and exploring creative income generation ideas
• Building partnerships that open doors for future growth

Community Connection

• Growing relationships with local schools (we have brilliant existing links!)
• Leading collective worship and assemblies
• Enhancing the relational pathways between schools and church
• Running holiday clubs, family events, and outreach activities
• Following up with baptism families and welcoming newcomers

Sunday Ministry

• Being present across our 3 churches on Sundays (you will be welcome to have one Sunday off a month, as part of your 2 days off per week, to worship with your own church family)
• Helping shape all-age worship that truly engages everyone
• Creating moments where children and young people feel they belon

Empowering Your Team

• Recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers (this is where the magic happens!)
• Helping people discover and use their gifts
• Building confidence in others so they can lead
• Creating a culture where volunteers feel valued and equipped

Practical Stuff

• Keeping up with safeguarding (we take this seriously, full training provided)
• Regular reporting and communication with the Joint Oversight Committee
• Regular supervision with both vicars
• Budget management and exploring funding opportunities
• Staying current with best practice in children and youth ministry
