About us
Who we are
We are a volunteer-led charity working with rural primary schools in the Tyume Valley area of Eastern Cape Province, South Africa. We run numeracy and literacy programmes and have set up community based reading clubs to promote the idea of reading for pleasure.
Our culture and values
We have been established in the area for more than 20 years and work as part of the community. Our mission is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for children in Tyume Valley, In keeping with the United Nations’ Sustainability Goal on Education. We have no paid staff in the UK and one paid coordinator in South Africa. Programmes are delivered by local teachers alongside Reading Ambassadors and Reading Club Leaders who are paid a stipend by TVS.
Equality, diversity and inclusion policy
Fairness and equality are part of our mission. Our board includes representatives from historically under-represented communities and our Reading Ambassadors and Reading Club Leaders all come from the communities in which they work.
