Who we are

Engineers Without Borders UK is a charity working to transform engineering so it creates a safe and just future for all.
 

Engineers will play a pivotal role in designing the solutions humanity and the planet need to thrive. That demands a rapid shift towards globally responsible approaches, and a reimagining of how engineering is taught and practised.

We equip individuals, teams and organisations with the skills and expertise to drive this change. Our work includes:

• Education programmes and design challenges that bring global responsibility into engineering degrees, reaching students at universities across the UK and beyond
• A national network of university Chapters: student-led groups that take action on campus and in their communities
• Partnerships with universities, industry, professional bodies and funders to reshape engineering education and practice
• Programmes that connect engineers with communities, such as Future Engineers for Fairer Energy, which trains students to deliver energy workshops in schools

We're part of the Engineers Without Borders International network, a global movement of organisations working towards the same goal.

Our culture and values

We're a small, ambitious team driven by a shared belief that engineering can be a catalyst for positive change. Our work, and how we do it, is guided by four principles of global responsibility:

• Responsible: meeting the needs of all people within the limits of our planet
• Purposeful: shaping outcomes to be equitable and ethical
• Inclusive: ensuring diverse viewpoints and knowledge are included and respected
• Regenerative: helping all living systems to achieve and maintain a healthier state

We believe we're stronger together. We work in close partnership with universities, industry, professional bodies and a global movement of over 50 Engineers Without Borders organisations.

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Engineering often fails to meet the needs and experiences of everyone in society, and a lack of representation has far-reaching consequences. We're committed to changing this, starting with our own organisation.
 

We welcome applications from people of all backgrounds and experiences, and we're committed to a fair, inclusive recruitment process where every candidate is assessed on their skills and potential. We oppose discrimination in all its forms and will make reasonable adjustments for anyone who needs them.
 

Our approach is guided by five principles:

• Reflection and education: we regularly reflect on our actions and challenge our own biases
• Progress not perfection: we value asking questions and having challenging conversations
• Accountability: we hold ourselves and others to account on representation and implementation
• Lasting and meaningful change: we follow through on our commitments, with no box-ticking
• Being an ally: we know when to step back, and when to use our platform to amplify marginalised voices
