Permaculture Association

Who we are

The Permaculture Association is working to radically and positively change the way we live in the UK and actively supports a worldwide movement. We're helping educate, network, support and redesign all aspects of our daily lives to transform ourselves, our communities and our landscapes. 

Our board of trustees is elected from the membership and guides our work. Voluntary working groups lead development, supported by our staff team. We employ 11 people part-time, most of whom work from home across the UK, and some based at our office in Leeds. We work online and use many tools to enable us to collaborate and stay connected.

Permaculture inspired thinking and action can help us to respond well to the huge challenges facing humanity. Report after report is validating the pioneering work that permaculture has been doing since the mid 1970s.

Our culture and values

The ethics of permaculture are at the heart of the Permaculture Association: Earth Care, People Care and Fair Share. These are reflected in the design of our work, our policies and how we work with members, partners and colleagues. You can find out more on our www.permaculture.org.uk

Equality, diversity and inclusion policy

Permaculture is based on an explicit set of ethics, one of which is ‘People Care’. The Permaculture Association recognises that disadvantage and inequality of opportunity exists and is committed to the principle of equal opportunities. We intend to ensure that all people are treated equally and fairly in all our activities and services. 

The Permaculture Association does not and shall not discriminate on the basis of race, colour, ethnicity, religion, gender, gender expression, care responsibilities, age, national origin, class, disability, neurodiversity, marital status, sexual orientation, sub-culture, trade union membership, or military status, in any of its activities or operations. These activities include membership application and provision of member profiles. We are committed to providing an inclusive and welcoming environment for all members of The Permaculture Association Britain, and require all members, board, staff and volunteers  to abide by this policy. Any reports of discrimination will be investigated by our team and board, and may be cause for membership being revoked.

We have introduced measures that combat all direct or indirect discrimination in our employment practices and our provision of services. These determine how we employ staff and recruit volunteers, how our services are delivered for the provision of information, membership, use of the office and our contact with the general public.  

The Association is committed to a programme of action to make our equal opportunities policy fully effective. We will regularly examine and challenge barriers that affect our activities as providers of services and employers, by monitoring and evaluation through user and management evaluation mechanisms.

We will also implement a rolling programme of Continuing Professional Development for tutors that will include refreshers and updates on justice, access, equality, diversity and inclusion.
