Job description

The Royal Hospital Chelsea is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to serve as a Specially Appointed Commissioner and provide financial investment expertise to the Board.

Role Overview: As a Specially Appointed Commissioner, you will play a crucial role in guiding the strategic direction of the Royal Hospital Chelsea. This unpaid position offers a rare chance to use your financial investment experience, and financial services expertise to contribute to the welfare of the Chelsea Pensioners.

The ideal candidate for this role must possess recent experience in financial investment at a senior level, along with broad and significant expertise in financial services. Furthermore, the candidate should demonstrate senior Board-level experience as a trustee or non-executive director in a regulated, charity, or not-for-profit organisation. Expertise in fundraising and trading activities combined with an ability to bring fresh perspectives to the strategic direction and decision-making processes of the Board is desirable. Experience of working within social care or health care businesses, heritage, or commercial events would be beneficial. In terms of general skills, the ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to take a broad corporate view across the organisation's management functions and the Board's agenda. A proven track record of collaborative work in teams and committees, coupled with the capacity for scrutiny and challenge, is essential. The candidate should also have significant governance experience and a strong reputation within their sector or network. An understanding or experience in the military and with military veterans is considered advantageous.

Above all, you will share our absolute commitment to our mission, vision, and values. In return, this role offers the opportunity to shape our future and ensure we continue to have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of our veterans.

The term is for 3 years initially, with the possibility of extending for a further 3 years.  All appointments are by Royal Warrant by His Majesty The King.

To apply for this role please visit the Governments Public Appointments website.

About Us: The story of today’s Royal Hospital Chelsea begins over 300 years ago during the reign of King Charles II, whose vision for a home for veteran soldiers was brought to life in buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren. Over the centuries, we have remained committed to our core mission of providing exemplary care, support and comradeship for British Army veterans known as the "Chelsea Pensioners."

The ethos of the Royal Hospital is one that puts a premium on selflessness and companionship.  Our values of nurturing belonging, respect individuals, encourage pride and enjoy life underpin that ethos. We are united in a shared purpose, living and working together and ensuring everyone has a place in our diverse social and military community.

The Royal Hospital Chelsea actively promotes equality, diversity, and inclusion. We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of our community – the more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect the breadth of our community.
