About Self Help UK

Self Help UK is a leading peer support organisation with over 40 years of experience in developing and delivering peer-led services. Our mission is to empower individuals and communities by embedding peer support principles into health and wellbeing initiatives. We have created a range of innovative programmes that help people living with cancer and other long-term health conditions to navigate challenges and take control of their health and wellbeing.

We work in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support on projects that make a real difference. These include national and local initiatives for the Deaf community, volunteer-led support for anyone affected by cancer, and prehabilitation services for those facing complex treatment. In 2026, we will collaborate with our Integrated Care System to improve health literacy and increase cancer screening uptake among underserved communities in Nottingham. Looking ahead, we are exploring a new direction to position Self Help UK as a holistic, person-centred support provider, embedding peer support and volunteer-led activity at the heart of everything we do. Our vision is to challenge health inequalities and enable people to feel confident, informed, and supported in shaping their own health journey.

What will you be doing?

You will be chairing the Board of Trustees, ensuring that we have minimum representation required for decisions to be made, keeping the board aligned in decision-making, ensuring all minutes are recorded and that all decisions by trustees are made with the appropriate context provided.

Trustees meetings are usually held every six weeks, plus there is an AGM, away days, and any sub-committee meetings that trustees may be involved in. Most meetings will remain virtual but there will from time to time be a need to attend key meetings and events in Nottingham. The time commitment is approximately 4hours per month, but there may be occasions when more time is required for a short period.

Trustee positions are unremunerated, but reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.

Who are we looking for?

Previous chairing experience

Help shape the future of specialist education for young people with vision impairment and complex needs.

We’re now looking for a Volunteer Trustee with strong experience in special education to help guide and strengthen our specialist FE College.

What the role involves

In addition to the standard responsibilities of a trustee, you will:

• Focus on the delivery and development of post-16 education for learners with vision impairment and complex needs

• Scrutinise the quality of teaching and learning

• Provide constructive challenge and professional insight as part of our Education Advisory Committee

• Work closely with our College Principal to champion high-quality, person-centred education

Our Board meets seven times a year, with optional invitations to events and celebrations. Trustees are encouraged to attend in person, though online attendance is possible where needed. Travel expenses are covered, and overnight accommodation can be arranged for trustees living outside Devon.

In this role, you will be supporting a lovely gentleman in his early 80s living in South Norwood. He is a keen drawer, gardener and chocolate-eater. His speech sometimes requires patience to understand, but his chattiness and lively sense of humour thrive with a calm, friendly and kind visitor. He would love to have you stop by for a cuppa, to watch the football with him and perhaps, in time, head out to a pub or café. 

Visitors visit 6 times a year (every 2 months) to create a 1-2-1 connection, offer companionship, encourage people to do the things they enjoy and check-in on their wellbeing. In many cases, the visitor is the only person in someone’s life who isn’t paid to be there for them.                                                                               

Trailblazers’ mission is to reduce re-offending and inspire new futures. Your support will help a young man to reconnect with his community, friends and loved ones, go into education, training and employment, and give a person a sense of hope for the future.

Trailblazers has been providing mentoring services to people in prison since 1998 with ultimate aim to reduce re-offending. We provide support to men between the age of 18 - 35 in custody who have 6 months left of their prison sentence, and then 'through the gate' into their own community for up to 12 months. The Education, Training & Employment (ETE) team supports our mentees in custody to break down barriers to employability. Post-release, this continues by supporting mentees to gain meaningful and career changing roles in sector specific industries such as Construction, Engineering, Catering & Hospitality or the Self-Employment route. 

The ETE team are looking to build a team of volunteers to work with mentees in the community and to shape the existing ETE service in the Thames Valley area. We are looking for volunteer mentors who can commit for up to 12 months and give a few hours a week to support men to change their life by being inspirational role models, helping with goal setting and supporting their mentee to access ETE opportunities and ultimately gain meaningful employment. Mentoring sessions will be 1:1, take place weekly and can be done remotely by telephone or online. These sessions will last approximately one hour, but some time should also be given to liaising with Trailblazers staff and researching relevant opportunities. 

Induction training is provided, out of pocket expenses covered, a mobile phone is provided to protect your identity, a Trailblazers T-shirt and lanyard are provided, DBS costs are covered, as well as regular reflective practice sessions to support you within your role. 

We are actively looking for people to join our mentoring community with lived experience of the criminal justice system, under represented groups from BAME community, creative arts, business skills, wellbeing - whatever your skills and background we are open to hear from you to support our diverse group of men. 

Trailblazers are looking for Volunteer Mentors who are:

• Empathetic with a positive outlook and manner.

• Well organised, can prioritise and multi-task.
• Reliable and able to commit to the role for up to 12 months providing weekly ETE sessions remotely either by telephone or via Zoom / MS Team digital platforms.
• Have skills and experience in supporting those who are disadvantaged into education, training and employment (ETE).
• Able to work independently with the ability to prioritise and manage your own workload with minimal supervision taking a flexible and creative approach to the demands of the post.
• Able to demonstrate sensitivity to other cultures, working with people from other backgrounds and demonstrate a commitment to equal opportunities.
• Live within a 30 mile radius of Bicester.

The Role

We are seeking a proactive, confident, and relationship driven Volunteer Partnerships & Growth Manager to identify, approach, and onboard affiliate partners, collaborators, agents, and other supporters who can help expand the reach of the platform.

This role focuses on building a strong network of individuals and organisations who can introduce creators, promote campaigns, or otherwise support the growth of Influential Stars.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify and approach potential affiliate partners, collaborators, agents, and networks

• Introduce individuals and organisations to the platform and explain how they can get involved

• Support onboarding of new collaborators and affiliates

• Build and maintain positive relationships with partners and introducers

• Encourage ongoing engagement and participation

• Maintain regular communication to nurture long term partnerships

• Coordinate with internal team members to ensure smooth onboarding

• Provide clear information about roles, expectations, and opportunities

• Maintain accurate records of outreach and partnerships using our CRM management system

• Represent the organisation professionally in all communications

Skills and Experience Required

Essential:

• Experience in outreach, partnerships, business development, or relationship building

• Excellent customer service skills

• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills

• Confidence communicating by phone, email, and online platforms

• Strong networking ability and proactive approach

• Strong IT skills, including confident use of computer databases and standard office software (e.g. Word, Excel)

• Experience using a CRM or similar database system

• Highly organised with strong attention to detail

Desirable:

• Familiarity with HubSpot CRM (preferred but not essential as training will be provided)

Although this is currently a volunteer position, Influential Stars is actively working to grow the platform with the long term aim of creating paid roles. While we are unable to provide a timeframe and future opportunities will depend on the organisation’s growth and incoming work, this role offers the chance to be part of that journey from an early stage.

Overseas Support Volunteer

Hospices of Hope is the only UK charity dedicated to the development of hospice care services throughout South and East Europe. We are dedicated to improving the lives of terminally ill patients in Romania and surrounding countries by supporting local hospice partners. We believe that everyone deserves the best possible care at the end of their life. However, in developing countries like Romania, many patients still die in pain without being offered any physical, spiritual, or emotional comfort.

We are looking for some enthusiastic volunteers with a variety of skills and interests to join us on our Summer Trips to Romania in 2026, which provide a much-needed break for children. There are two different groups of children that enjoy the trips. Some are affected by rare or life-limiting illnesses, others have experienced trauma through the death of a close relative. The other group of children who attend are relatives of patients in our care.

The children who benefit from our trips are often completely neglected by health care and social service systems. Our Summer Trips are an opportunity for them to relax, have fun, share stories, and find comfort in each other.

The trip includes airfares from London, transfers to and from the airport in Romania, your disclosure and barring service check, training, and accommodation. If you opt for the first trip, only breakfast and lunch are provided on the days you are at the hospice. You will need to pay for evening and weekend meals. If you opt for the second trip, whilst at the camp, all meals are provided. Again, you will need to pay for weekend meals.

The hours you attend will differ depending on which trip you attend; however, your role as a volunteer will involve you engaging with the children doing enjoyable activities, crafts, games, and much more. It is a chance for them to enjoy being children and just have some fun.

Sift is a UK charity providing specialist support, information and advocacy for people affected by self-harm. We work alongside people who have been directly affected by self-harm at every level of our organisation. We are service-user centred, and ensure our service users are at the heart of everything we do. Board Secretary

Role Purpose

The Board Secretary helps ensure that Sift is governed with clarity and accountability. This role supports the Board to function well, ensuring that decisions are properly recorded and that governance processes enable the charity’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare agendas and papers for Board and sub-committee meetings with the Chair and CEO.
• Take clear, accurate minutes that reflect decisions, context and agreed actions.
• With support from the Head of Operations, maintain key governance records, including trustee details, conflicts of interest and policies.
• Support compliance with the charity’s governing document and Charity Commission requirements.
• Assist with timely statutory filings and good governance practice.
• Act as a trusted point of reference for governance-related queries.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Clear, inclusive written communication.
• Respect for confidentiality and sensitive information.
• Commitment to Sift’s mission and lived-experience-informed values.

Desirable:

• Experience in charity governance, company secretarial work or

trustee roles.

• Familiarity with Charity Commission guidance.

Time Commitment:

• 6–8 Board meetings per year, plus preparation time.

Business Development Lead

Role Purpose

The Business Development Lead supports Sift to grow sustainably, so that more people affected by self-injury can access support. This role brings a strategic lens to income generation, partnerships and opportunity development, grounded in the charity’s values and ethical approach.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and oversight of Sift’s income generation strategy.
• Support exploration of new funding, partnership and collaboration opportunities including the expansion and relaunch of our national in-person and online training programme.
• Offer insight and challenge on fundraising, commercial or social enterprise ideas.
• Network with key players in the mental health and wellbeing field.
• Help assess risk, impact and alignment with Sift’s mission.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Experience in business development, commercial income generation, partnerships or strategy.
• Ability to balance ambition with care and ethical decision-making.
• Strong communication and influencing skills.
• Commitment to SIFT’s mission and lived-experience-informed ethos.

Desirable:

• Experience working with charities or social enterprises.
• Knowledge of trusts, foundations, corporate giving or

commissioning.

Time Commitment:

input outside meetings.

Leadership & Governance Director

Role Purpose

The Leadership & Governance Director helps ensure that Sift’s leadership, culture and governance remain strong, inclusive and fit for purpose. This role supports the Board to be reflective, effective and accountable as the organisation grows.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide oversight and constructive challenge on governance, leadership and culture.
• Support trustee recruitment, induction and ongoing Board development.
• Contribute to succession planning and long-term organisational resilience.
• Ensure governance arrangements evolve appropriately with growth.
• Champion equity, inclusion and lived experience at Board level.

Person Specification

Essential:

• Experience in senior leadership, governance, HR or organisational development.
• Strong understanding of effective Board dynamics.
• Confidence in offering thoughtful challenge and strategic insight.
• Commitment to Sift’s mission and values.

Desirable:

• Experience as a trustee, Chair or committee lead.
• Knowledge of safeguarding and people governance in charities.

Time Commitment:

• 6–8 Board meetings per year, with some additional

involvement as needed.

• Up to 4 in-person meetings at our Bristol based office.

We are looking for a Volunteer Investigative Journalist to research, uncover, and report stories that align with our mission. This role is ideal for students, hobbyists, career changers, or those with lived experience who want to tell stories about social injustice, trauma, and community issues.

You will work closely with the Volunteer Editorial Lead, who will guide editing, fact-checking, and narrative development, ensuring every story is polished and impactful.
 
Key Responsibilities
Story Research
•        Identify potential stories related to CSA awareness, safeguarding, survivor experiences, or systemic issues
•        Conduct responsible research to verify facts and context
•        Identify individuals or sources willing to share their story
Interviews & Story Development
•        Conduct interviews via online platforms or in person where appropriate
•        Develop stories in a respectful, trauma-informed way
•        Work with the editorial lead to shape stories into publishable content
Ethical Journalism
•        Prioritise consent, confidentiality, and safeguarding
•        Ensure stories are handled with care and sensitivity
•        Protect the dignity and safety of individuals sharing their experiences
Reporting Output
•        Aim to produce one story per month or at an agreed pace
 
Types of Stories We Encourage
Stories may include:
•        Survivor journeys and recovery stories
•        Community awareness and prevention efforts
•        Failures or gaps in safeguarding systems from whistleblowers, retired professionals, etc
•        Advocacy work and survivor support initiatives
•        Cultural or societal issues surrounding abuse disclosure
•        Investigative pieces highlighting systemic concerns
The focus should always remain respectful, responsible, and survivor-centred.
 
Skills & Experience (Helpful but Not Required)
We welcome individuals at beginner to intermediate to expert level who are eager to continuous learning.
Helpful experience includes:
•        Journalism, media, or writing experience
•        Interviewing and research skills
•        Interest in investigative storytelling
•        Podcasting, documentary, or narrative journalism
•        Academic study in journalism, sociology, criminology, psychology, or law
Lived experience and a passion for truth-telling and social awareness are highly valued.
 
Personal Qualities
We are looking for volunteers who are:
•        Curious and thoughtful researchers
•        Compassionate and respectful listeners
•        Ethical in handling sensitive topics
•        Comfortable speaking with people about difficult experiences
•        Committed to responsible storytelling
Because this role involves sensitive subject matter, emotional maturity and ethical awareness are essential.
 
Working Arrangement
This role is remote and flexible.
Volunteers may:
•        Conduct interviews online from anywhere in the world
•        Investigate stories within their local communities
•        Work independently while receiving editorial guidance
This allows volunteers to pursue stories within their own environment or network.
