Crossness Pumping Station (overseen by the Crossness Engines Trust) is a unique and valuable museum of UK and world reknown telling the history of how the ambitious management of sewage transformed London as a city of growth and innovation in the 1860s and helped eradicate cholera. Preserved and restored by a group of enthusiasts since 1987, we are now entering a second phase of major restoration and we need visionary trustees who can help us achieve it.
This role is one of three we have created for experts in their field to help us implement a major programme over the next 5-10 years. It really is your chance to be part of our history!
As well as the usual trustee roles (outlined in the role description attached) the specific skills needed for this role include:
Role Objectives
- Acting as lead expert on the Board in relation to fundraising (eg grant funding, legacy funding, onsite donations, but not commercial trading/visitor charges).
- Advising on good practice and regulatory and policy issues in charity fundraising.
- Identifying future fundraising prospects and working with volunteers to achieve these.
Responsibilities

Candidate requirements
Essential
- Proven success in heritage or similar charity fundraising.
- Good knowledge of the standards required by the Institute of Fundraising.
- Ability to develop fundraising skills in volunteers.
- Good knowledge of relevant stakeholders in the fundraising community.
- Excellent communication skills including with staff and volunteers as well as fellow trustees.
- An understanding of the importance of collaboration and problem-solving.
- Confident and proficient in the use of MS Office 365.
- Commitment to attend board meetings regularly and volunteer for other sub-committees as appropriate.
- Able to devote around 2-3 hours per week on preparing for meetings.
- Treating colleagues with respect and politeness.
Desirable
- Experience in the charity sector.
- Experience as a volunteer in a similar organisation.
- Experience in Digital, Marketing and Finance would also be useful.

Key tasks

Membership and Operation of the Board
The Trustees of the Board are appointed by the Trust Members to provide a range of skills, expertise and ability to realise the vision and values of ENN and enhance its effective strategic leadership and management.
The term of office for any Trustee shall be four years. Any Trustee may be re-appointed or re-elected at a General Meeting (reference articles). The chair will be elected by the trustees and may hold a maximum of two terms of three years.
Time Commitment – And our Commitment to You
Your commitment in an average year is likely to be 4 pre-fixed board meetings, each of half a day. Each of these are preceded by sub-committee meetings, usually of ninety-minutes, and each trustee is expected to participate in one sub-committee. Other committee and ad hoc meetings and additional support will be arranged as agreed. We encourage active participation and engagement, and Trustees often give more time outside of this, on their own terms.
Board meetings are held virtually, with an intention to hold one facilitated face to face meeting at the ENN office in Kidlington, Oxfordshire, every two years. Sub-committee meetings will be convened remotely.
Ideally you will join the Board in October 2025, though we can show some flexibility on this for the right candidate, and in your first few months you should allow for additional time for induction and orientation (including meeting members of the Leadership Team).
Remuneration
This is an unpaid, voluntary position. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed for attendance at Board meetings and other Trustee activities in line with ENN’s policies. Raising Futures Kenya is looking for an enthusiastic, committed Trustee, with a passion for supporting our small but mighty international NGO through a journey of shifting power to our partner NGO. We are particularly looking for individuals with experience in fundraising in the international development sector, and a strong understanding of the international fundraising landscape.
Responsible to: Chair, Raising Futures Kenya
Purpose: To guide and advise on the international fundraising landscape, and shifting the power (including fundraising) to our Kenyan partners.

We currently have seven Trustees across the UK, USA and Kenya and three paid, part-time staff. Board meetings are every 6-8 weeks in the evening via Google Meet.
About Raising Futures Kenya
For 22 years, Raising Futures Kenya (England & Wales charity no.1181670) has worked alongside local people, and our partner NGO, in Kenya to develop projects which are owned by the community and create long-term, sustainable change to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods.
Through our Seed of Hope training and support programme we enable 14-25 year olds (75% girls) to secure employment or start a small business, generating enough income to live above the poverty line. We provide free technical vocational and business skills training, alongside mental health and wellbeing support which has led to over 90% of graduates being in employment, self-employment or further education. Seed of Hope offers young people opportunity, dignity and hope.
All training is combined with 3 key elements of support which makes our project unique and more successful than vocational training alone.
1. Daily life skills and mental health wellbeing curriculum which includes topics on common mental health issues to challenge stigma and signpost students to the free counselling sessions we offer, gender equality, knowing and asserting your rights, family planning, health, hygiene and nutrition.
2. Practical help is provided to ensure we remove any barriers young people may face in gaining an education and attending lessons, such as; free cooked lunches, support with travel costs, childcare vouchers for young mothers and free menstrual hygiene packs.
3. Graduate support helps young people set up their own business and generate a sustainable income. This includes tailored business and financial literacy training, access to the Seed of Hope Business Hub providing computers, tools, and materials for graduates to use to launch their business, plus an ongoing peer mentoring scheme from former successful Seed of Hope graduates.
If students are traumatised, hungry or can’t afford sanitary products, they won’t be in a position to learn. We treat every student as an individual and personalise our support to their specific needs and circumstances to set every student up for success. We know this holistic approach is more successful than vocational training alone, and has the most meaningful impact for young people.

Bi Pride UK’s mission is to create spaces where people who experience attraction beyond gender can be freely visible and celebrate themselves and their identities. It’s not enough to be ‘welcome’ at Pride. We make up a very large proportion of the queer community – the 2021 Census actually shows we’re half of the community – and we deserve to be visible and celebrated in our own right.
There are many ways to make this happen, and we work in many ways to bring this change about:
- Outreach work with other Prides, LGBTQ+ organisations and bi organisations – our consultation work with local Prides, the UK Pride Organisers Network and local and national LGBTQ+ organisations works in a tailored way to make sure that bi-inclusion is a top priority and is being done well
- Organising a high-profile annual Bi Pride event – from September 2019, Bi Pride UK made history with the largest ever gathering of bi people recorded. A performance stage, a panel stage, stall village, street food, and over 1,300 attendees. After going virtual with the BiFi Festival for 2020 due to Covid-19 and running a virtual Pride event in 2021, we came back in person in 2022 with a hybrid event, and have been running the event in this format ever since
- Building a strong online and virtual community – just as important as the rest of our work is making sure that people hear about it! People need to know what resources and spaces exist for them, and how they can connect with other people like them
The role:
We are looking for a volunteer to lead our Fundraising team, a team which we envision comprising volunteers managing grants fundraising, corporate fundraising and community fundraising. At present we don’t yet have any volunteers working specifically on fundraising, making this an exciting opportunity to take on a new challenge of building up a crucial team of fundraisers enabling us to deliver our charitable work.
Our income streams at present have some healthy diversity, including corporate sponsorship, income from delivering training and consultation work, regular and one-off individual giving, merchandise sales, event revenue and other miscellaneous sources. We are particularly keen to increase our grants income from trusts and foundations and plan to bring in volunteer capacity and skills to allow us to develop this area.
The Head of Fundraising will be responsible for leading the direction of this team, thinking strategically about how to maximise income and recruiting and managing the volunteers who will lead on the different fundraising areas. Their first priority will be to begin to build a team of volunteers to support with fundraising activities, supported by Bi Pride UK’s Volunteer Management team.
Once the team has been built up, day-to-day responsibilities of the Head will include:
- Chairing regular fundraising team meetings;
- Working with the Chair and the Fundraising Trustee to set achievable fundraising targets for the team;
- Maintaining relationships with existing corporate partners and cultivating new relationships in line with Bi Pride UK’s values;
- Supporting other teams within Bi Pride UK to explore income generating opportunities in their own work.
The Head of Fundraising will have three primary objectives:
- Expanding income from trusts and foundations;
- Stewarding existing and new corporate relationships;
- Facilitating other teams to increase income for Bi Pride UK.
Our team volunteers remotely from anywhere in the UK, with some travel required occasionally (primarily for our flagship Pride event in London in September). Our Trustees and Heads meetings take place via conference call on the third Monday evening of every month. All reasonable expenses incurred are reimbursed, including travel, lunch at away days and other all day events, and some childcare costs if required.
