Digital and Technology Lead (Volunteer Board Appointment)
The British Institute of Radiology (BIR) is seeking an experienced and forward-thinking digital or technology leader to join Council as our Digital and Technology Lead.
This is an exciting opportunity to influence the strategic direction of one of the UK's leading multidisciplinary membership organisations for imaging and oncology professionals. We are looking for someone who can bring independent expertise, challenge and insight to support Council as we navigate opportunities in digital transformation, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity and data governance.
As healthcare, education and membership organisations increasingly rely on technology to deliver value, this role will help ensure that the BIR remains innovative, resilient and focused on the needs of its members.
About the Role The Digital and Technology Lead is a voluntary advisory role that provides strategic guidance to Council on technology-related matters.
The post-holder will contribute independent expertise and practical insight, helping Council understand emerging trends, assess opportunities and risks and strengthen the organisation's digital capability.
This is a lay role. The post-holder is not a trustee or officer of the organisation, does not hold voting rights on Council, and is not responsible for operational delivery, staff management or the implementation of technology solutions.
Responsibility for decision-making remains with Council and the Board of Trustees.
Key Responsibilities
You will:
· Support strategic planning for digital services, AI adoption and cybersecurity.
· Advise Council on technology trends, digital innovation and their implications for the BIR and its members.
· Help identify and mitigate technology-related risks, including data protection, interoperability and ethical considerations.
· Advise on relevant standards, governance frameworks and best practice.
· Provide insight into emerging technologies that could enhance member engagement, education delivery and organisational efficiency.
· Act as a sounding board for technology-related projects, investments and partnerships.
· Work collaboratively with Council members and staff to strengthen digital capability and resilience.
· Champion accessibility, inclusivity and user-centred approaches within technology initiatives.
Who We Are Looking For
We welcome applications from individuals with senior-level experience in technology, digital transformation, health technology or a related field.
You will be able to demonstrate:
· Strategic leadership experience in digital, technology, data or innovation.
· Understanding of data governance, cybersecurity and artificial intelligence.
· Knowledge of digital transformation within professional, healthcare, education or membership environments is desirable.
· The ability to communicate complex technical concepts clearly and effectively to non-technical audiences.
· Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills.
· A collaborative and constructive approach to influencing and advising senior leaders.
· A commitment to the values, mission and charitable objectives of the BIR.
We are particularly interested in hearing from applicants who can bring diverse perspectives and experiences to support the work of Council.
Time Commitment
The appointment is for a three-year term, commencing on 1 October, with the opportunity to apply for a second term at the end of the appointment.
The role will involve attendance at:
· Four Council meetings per year
· Four Finance, Investment and Audit Committee meetings per year
Most meetings are held online. Occasional in-person meetings may be required, although remote attendance will remain available wherever possible.
Expenses
This is a voluntary and unremunerated role.
Reasonable travel and subsistence expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with the BIR Expenses Policy.

Location Policy: Fully Globally Remote. Must be available for 1-2 hours of meetings weekly within core UK hours to collaborate with the team.
What is the role?
As our Web & Digital Lead, you will look after our website and online presence to make sure everything runs smoothly and stays updated.
You will manage our Wix site, keep our shop and event listings running seamlessly, and upload new content and zines so our community can easily connect with our work.
This is a volunteer position. Your work in our purpose-driven collective will have a direct role in shaping the visual language of a justice-centred environmental movement.
What will you be responsible for?

Manage, update, and maintain the Wild We Stand website.

Set up and look after shop pages, digital downloads, and event ticketing.

Upload new graphics, zine PDFs, and content updates provided by the Visual and Editorial leads.

Fix any website glitches or tech issues to keep things running smoothly.

Commitment to a decolonised imagination that connects conservation to the intersections of wildlife and oppression.

An unwavering drive to confront the consequences of capitalism and systems of power with the urgency required for genuine change and justice.
What are we looking for?

Practical experience building and managing sites on Wix (or similar).

Comfort setting up simple online store features, digital downloads, and ticket links.

A practical, hands-on mindset to handle site updates independently.

Good organizational skills to keep pages updated and tidy.

Shared commitment to radical ecology and accessible digital spaces.

A collaborative, non-hierarchical mindset that thrives in a flat collective structure.
