In 2026, Cockpit celebrates 40 years of supporting makers, and we have an ambitious calendar of events planned. Our 40th anniversary events, taking place at both Cockpit Bloomsbury and Cockpit Deptford, include our biannual Open Studios, the launch of our annual report, The Cockpit Effect, during London Craft Week, and more.
Each event is an invaluable opportunity to meet a diverse body of artist-makers that create and showcase their craft directly to the public. The volunteer team are key to helping Cockpit deliver a smooth and enriching experience to all our partners and visitors.

A charity and award-winning social enterprise, Cockpit gives makers tools to build their businesses so they can focus on what they do best: making. We provide funded studio space, in-house business training and coaching, and exhibition opportunities for 176 makers practicing 23 different disciplines. Beyond Cockpit we work with makers throughout the United Kingdom and internationally.

What will you do?
By joining the Cockpit team as a volunteer, you help us by being an on-site presence at our events, and you will actively engage with those running the event, offer help, talk to and guide visitors around the building, and pass any problems/issues back to the event manager.

We are looking for Welcome volunteers to staff the welcome desk and be first point of contact for our visitors. Our volunteers play an important and valuable role in our cathedral community. Volunteering can be a wonderful way to find a sense of purpose and belonging. You can use your skills, build your confidence and develop as part of a supportive and caring team. You’ll have the opportunity to work in an exciting and vibrant place of Christian worship, surrounded by beautiful architecture and our world-famous stained-glass windows.
Our volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds and each person has their own reasons for wanting to volunteer. Tasks include:
· To greet visitors entering the cathedral and offer a first-class welcome

Ensuring the safety of everyone who comes into the cathedral is Birmingham Cathedral Chapter’s highest priority. All volunteers must also complete our Safeguarding training before they can start working with us.

The NIAS Creative Campus Events & Digital Administrative Assistant will support the smooth operation, promotion, and growth of the Creative Campus venue.
The role exists to assist with the administration, marketing, and delivery of events and programmes hosted at the venue. The successful candidate will gain hands-on experience in venue operations, digital promotion, social media marketing, event coordination, and community engagement.
