This is a volunteer opportunity supporting families through our advice line. As a volunteer, you’ll contribute your time to help us offer reliable information and a listening ear. Volunteers are a valued part of our mission, and we aim to make the experience supportive, enjoyable, and meaningful.
Role Overview:
Are you looking for an opportunity to use your speech and language therapy expertise in a voluntary capacity to support children and families?
As an Advice Line Volunteer, you will contribute to our mission by sharing information about typical development and guidance on how families can support their child’s speech and language needs. You will help families by offering clear information, resources and a listening ear as they navigate concerns around speech and language challenges.

What we’re looking for in a volunteer
Skills and Experience
- Qualified speech and language therapists with 3 years experience and direct clinical practice in the last 12 months
- Qualified speech and language therapist aware of current practice in their area of experience
- Experience across two or more of the following age ranges – Early Years, Primary, Secondary, FE
- RCSLT registration
- HCPC registration is welcome for practising clinicians.
- Experience offering supportive advice to families or practitioners
- Comfortable volunteering independently from home.
Technology
- Comfortable using email and Word.
- Able to follow simple digital instructions.
- Familiarity with other Microsoft tools is helpful.
Other
- Available to take part in a shared rota to ensure the line is covered. We ask for a commitment of 4 hours per week or fortnight.
- Interest in ongoing learning is welcome.
- Ability to volunteer from a quiet, confidential space.
Practical considerations and time commitment:
You’ll receive a full induction, role specific training and ongoing support from your named contact. All regular volunteers are asked to provide references and complete internal training.
We ask for most volunteers to offer around 4 hours a week or fortnight. We rely on volunteers giving regular time so families know when we’ll be there for them. All volunteers take part in a shared schedule of volunteer time.

Open Country is a Charity that helps people with disabilities to access and enjoy the countryside. We are always looking for volunteers to support our conservation and gardening groups, walking group and our weekend outings.
- Conservation group meet on a Tuesday and is made up of adults with learning disabilities who carry out practical conservation tasks each week at various locations. We work with organisations like Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and RSPB. Tasks can include meadow creation, tree planting, pond maintenance and invasive species removal to name but a few.
- Walking group meet on a Thursday and is made up of adults with learning disabilities or sensory impairments. We walk between 5-7miles each week at different locations around Yorkshire and normally finish the walk with a pub or cafe stop.
- Gardening and arts group meet on a Friday, and is made up of adults with learning disabilities, where we learn about gardening and various natural craft like willow weaving. We also regulary work with organisations like the National Trust and the National Coal Mining Museum.
We also run weekend outings for people with all kinds of disabilities providing experiences and a chance to socialise and explore new places. Our activities range from a gentle amble round a country house and gardens, wildlife watching at a nature reserve to axe throwing and abseiling.
As a volunteer you would be helping our members stick together as a group, or carry out the conservation tasks, making sure they are happy and safe.
No experience is required, just a willingness to get stuck in! We will provide all relevant training for the role.
We meet at Thornes Park Nursery, Wakefield at 10am and head out in our accessible minibus to site.

Hertfordshire’s Family Centre Service brings children’s centres, health visiting and school nursing together, to provide a more joined-up service for children, young people, and their families.
The centres deliver a range of support groups and activities for children and their families to help them be healthy, grow and develop. To make it easy for families to fit sessions and services around their busy lives, access is available from any Hertfordshire Family centre. Main Tasks/ Responsibilities/ Activities
To represent Family Centre Services within local communities and help strengthen the link between families and the centre by promoting services and support available.
Key Responsibilities:
· Promote Hertfordshire Family Centres by attending toddler and parent groups and local activities.
· Distribute leaflets, posters, and other promotional materials in community venues (e.g. libraries, health centres, nurseries, shops).
· Talk to parents, carers, and professionals about the Family Centre offer, signposting them to services and activities.
· Share updates on Family Centre activities through word of mouth, local networks, and community noticeboards.
· Provide feedback to Family Centre staff about local needs, events, and opportunities for engagement.
· Represent the Family Centre in a positive and professional way at all times.

What will you be doing?

What are we looking for?
This vacancy is for a Primary School and nursery (ages 3-11). The school would ideally like to find someone who has experience in safeguarding and anti-bullying.
You must be over 18, but you don’t need to be a parent or have children of school age. Often, it’s the outside perspective you can bring that a school needs. Professional experience in areas such as safe guarding, change management, and leadership skills are all useful to a school. Soft skills such as communication and problem solving are also great additions.
What difference will you make?
Governors make decisions that affect schools for years to come. Chair of Governors work in partnership with Head Teachers and the Senior Management Team to help deliver the best possible education, and help children realise their expectations and aspirations.
Our recent impact survey found that our volunteers bring £9.9 million worth of value to schools each year, and 9/10 volunteers would recommend being a governor to a friend.
As a chair of governors, you will be encouraged to visit the school to gain an understanding of the culture and ethos and to get the most out of the role. You’ll also have the opportunity to meet children, parents, and teachers, and see the impact of your work first-hand.

Volunteering as a chair of governors is a challenging but rewarding role. As part of the governing board, you’ll:
· Have support from the vice chair(s) and the clerk, to ensure the effective functioning of the board by keeping it focused on its core functions. You will also encourage the board to work together as an effective team, building its skills, knowledge and experience.
