1. Characters - Visit children in costume, as well-known children's characters (eg princesses and superheroes). Provide support at events of a number of other charities, children's hospitals and council organisations through storytime, interactions and activities. 

2. Magic Makers - Visit children out of costume and provide enrichment such as arts and crafts, games etc. 

3. Committee - Help behind the scenes by organising events, recruiting volunteers, running training sessions, helping sort costumes, running fundraisers etc.

This role is working therapeutically alongside a child/young person on one of our bereavement support days on either a Saturday or Sunday in a group setting.  Ideally you will have experience in working with children and have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels and be able to support children and young people in distress and remain calm. 

You will be working therapeutically with your allocated child after receiving training.  You will have a group leader who will guide you through the structure of each day. There is also a Clinical Lead who will oversee and facilitate the programme.

You will also be expected to attend a debrief at the end of each day and also complete detailed documentation on the child/ young person you have been working with.

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.  We pay 40pence per mile to cover your travel expenses. We will provide training (Safeguarding Children, Volunteer Induction Day and other specialist training days).

You will also have the opportunity to observe a weekend programme in action before you work with a child / young person. We will pay for your DBS check and provide you with a uniform.

Volunteers in this role would be expected to: • Support and undertake bucket collections in local communities and at public events. • Help plan and run fundraising events and activities throughout the year. • Deliver community engagement talks about the work of St John Ambulance to local groups and organisations. • Support first aid demonstrations and awareness sessions (no previous first aid knowledge required – full training will be provided). • Complete role-specific induction and mandatory training. • Attend occasional team meetings or briefings, usually held locally or online. Time commitment is flexible and can be arranged around work, family, and other commitments. This role is ideal for volunteers who enjoy meeting people, being out in the community, and making a visible difference.

The Fixing Factory is a community repair hub where we teach repair skills, repair and refurbish electrical waste, and help people keep their electrical items in use for longer.

Our work is made possible with the support of a team of volunteers who help people to get their electronic items fixed, learn repair skills and provide valuable support to environmental charities Possible (The 10:10 Foundation) and The Restart Project.

We are looking for volunteers to provide training and support to our mentors in prison. There may be some additional preparation and/ or administrative tasks in between volunteering days at the prison.

Our prison volunteers nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by delivering training sessions for prison mentors and offering ongoing advice, guidance and support through mentor meetings.

Volunteer recruitment dates

The closing date for applications to attend our next round of training is 3 May 2026. In some circumstances, volunteer vacancies may close early. Successful applicants will be sent interview questions in advance with notice to prepare. We will respond to all applications. Successful applicants will be invited to an interview between 4 May and 15 May 2026. This is an opportunity for you to meet our regional team, to find out more about you and for us to share more information about the volunteering role.

Training:

You'll be given high quality training to prepare you for volunteering with Shannon Trust. This takes place over 4 training sessions and via our online training portal. We ask that volunteers aim to complete the training in one course as this means that you will be ready to start actively volunteering. The next training sessions for volunteering for people applying to be a prison based volunteer will take place as follows.

Shannon Trust’s vision is of a future where everyone can experience the positive impact of learning. As a prison volunteer your role will be at the heart of our organisation as you support our mentors in prisons. This will include delivering training to new mentors and supporting existing mentors to develop and deliver our Turning Pages and Count Me In programmes. You will be volunteering alongside Shannon Trust facilitators and / or frontline prison staff to empower mentors and ensure no one is left out of learning.

• Delivering initial, and ongoing, training to mentors in prisons
• Supporting and encouraging the Shannon Trust facilitator and mentors to attract new learners and expand the reach of the Shannon Trust programme

• Using your skills to build positive relationships with frontline prison staff, people in prison and other organisations
• Training and supporting mentors to collect and submit data and learner feedback
• Supporting with the planning of, and attendance at, celebration events
• Collecting and sharing good news stories and feedback
• Attending area meetings and sharing good practice with other volunteers
• Engaging with quarterly reviews to receive support and discuss progress
• Acting as an ambassador for Shannon Trust in all that you do, sharing the vision and values of the charity throughout your volunteering

• A commitment to providing non-judgemental support to people in prison
• Able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and have flexibility to visit the prison at times required

• Administrators - Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.

The skills you need

• Be friendly and approachable.
• Confident to engage with the public, potential clients, volunteers and SSAFA colleagues face-to-face.
• Reliable attitude, staying connected with your Branch and/or Community Engagement Manager about your availability.
• Access to public transport or a car to get to events if necessary.
• Basic IT skills would be an advantage.
