Gardeners volunteer roles

Our Gardener Volunteers support our homes by helping to maintain their outdoor spaces through weeding, pruning and planting, so that the people we support can enjoy spending time in a beautiful environment. 

We are currently looking for volunteer gardeners for one of our services, who can support with the following tasks:

• Create planters

• Provide general maintenance of our gardens

• Watering, planting, weeding and pruning

• Maintaining flower beds

• Creating/improving/maintaining our sensory garden spaces

Skills required 

In order to become one of our gardener volunteers you will be:

• Knowledgeable about plants

• Confident using gardening equipment

• Punctual and reliable

• Friendly and approachable.

Training required for this role (all delivered vis e-learning)

• Safeguarding

• H&S

• Manual Handling

• How to be Eye Care Aware

• Fire Safety

• Infection Control

• Data Security and Confidentiality

• First Aid

All these courses will take approximately 40-60 minutes, apart from the First Aid which is 2 hours.

About Us 

Registered as The Royal School for the Blind, SeeAbility is one of the oldest disability charities in the UK. This year we are celebrating our 225th anniversary, having pioneered specialist support across multiple generations since 1799!

We specialise in supporting people who have learning disabilities, autism, complex needs, who may also have sight loss. Our support ranges from providing person-centred support across our many supported-living and residential care provisions. Furthermore, we provide specialist eye-care services to children and adults alike and assists people to find paid employment for the very first time.

SeeAbility provides the resources and expertise that make this possible, we support people to live ambitious lives and achieve things they never thought possible.

As a Gardening Volunteer at Croft House, you’ll play an important part in creating and maintaining a welcoming, therapeutic outdoor space for residents. Working alongside staff and residents, you’ll help care for the garden while supporting engaging, hands-on gardening activities.

This role is about more than plants — it’s about connection, wellbeing and creating a shared space where residents can relax, learn new skills and enjoy being outdoors. Your ideas and enthusiasm will help shape seasonal projects and themed gardening sessions throughout the year.

Key Duties

• Support the general upkeep of the garden (planting, watering, weeding, tidying and seasonal maintenance).

• Work alongside residents to co-create and deliver inclusive gardening sessions.

• Encourage and support residents to take part in hands-on gardening tasks.

• Help plan and contribute ideas for seasonal or themed activities (e.g. spring planting, sensory gardens, harvest projects).

• Promote a positive, safe and welcoming outdoor environment.

• Follow guidance from staff to ensure activities are safe and accessible for all.

• Has an interest in gardening (experience is helpful but not essential).

• Is friendly, patient and enjoys working with people.

• Feels confident supporting others in practical, hands-on tasks.

• Is reliable and able to commit to agreed volunteering times.

Role Summary

Working alongside fellow volunteers and staff, you will help keep our gardens and outdoor spaces attractive, safe and well maintained. Our gardens provide a place for reflection, comfort and enjoyment, making your contribution an important part of the experience we offer.

Gardening volunteer opportunities are currently available on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays. We offer a flexible approach to volunteering, and the time commitment is largely at the volunteer's discretion. Whether you can give a few hours occasionally or volunteer more regularly, we would be delighted to hear from you.

Main duties of this role may include any of the following: 

• Helping to keep gardens and outdoor areas tidy, welcoming and well cared for.
• Weeding, planting, digging, edging, pruning and sweeping pathways as required.
• Assisting with the care and maintenance of flower beds and planted areas.
• Watering pots, containers and garden areas when needed.
• Supporting the upkeep of composting areas.
• Mowing lawns and helping maintain grassy areas.
• Reporting any larger gardening or maintenance requirements to your line manager, such as hedge cutting or tree work.
• Informing your line manager if tools require replacement, repair or sharpening.
• Helping to keep the gardening shed and storage areas organised and tidy.

Experience & qualifications required

· Volunteers will be expected to work independently and should be comfortable undertaking gardening duties with minimal supervision.

· This role does not provide hands-on gardening instruction or training so previous gardening experience is preferred.

At Chestnut Tree House we will be opening a brand-new Kitchen Garden to supply produce to our hospice kitchens. There are large beds which will cultivate vegetables as well as an area for fruit bushes and trees. An activities area with raised troughs for the children, young people and families to enjoy planting will be at the centre, with paths around the fruit and vegetable beds.

We are looking for someone with passion and knowledge to help us keep the area in tip top condition maintaining and developing the space.

Every week you can find our environmental experts at Snipe Park Wood in Harworth & Bircotes, a lovely green space! We maintain it for the enjoyment of the community and wildlife.

In 2024 we tackled the persistent flood problems in the area, by removing overgrown vegetation, digging out blocked drains. To launch the improved area, we hosted free children’s play groups for pre-school age children to engage with nature and discover the joys of outdoors play.

We are currently working on a wide range of improvements, including improving pathways, creating wildlife habitats, implementing a wildflower meadow, small construction tasks like building fences, litter picking, and much more.

You can be part of it! We are looking for volunteers who can help us. We are there every Monday 9am – 2pm and you can choose to come ad-hoc or regularly.

We welcome people of all ages and abilities, whether you’re an avid gardener or a brand new enthusiast. Full training, PPE, and light refreshments are provided. We’ll also fully reimburse your transport costs.

Our outdoor community hub in Worksop launched in autumn 2024 and continues to grow.

We host family events, children’s nature play groups, workshops, green skills training sessions, and much more. We also grow our own produce to use in healthy cooking and eating events on-site.

Every other Friday 9:30am – 2:30pm we work with volunteers who want to be part of something special, to give back to the community and the environment. You can still sign up even if you can’t attend every time or all day, every hour you spent with us is greatly appreciated.

We need volunteers to help us with: DIY, gardening, implementing infrastructure such as polytunnels, raised beds, seating, and more.

• Red River Local Nature Reserve in Heanor & Loscoe: Every second Saturday of the month from 10am – 12pm
