Time Commitment:       Between 15 and 40 hours annually, depending on personal capacity. Role commitments include five board meetings per year including the annual general meeting, and periodic sub-committees and public events.

1. Organisational Information:

1.1 The Walton Firs Foundation is a Surrey-based registered charity (Charity registration number: 1113830), and a company limited by guarantee without share capital (Companies House registration number: 05695208). The Foundation’s charitable mission is to support young people’s personal development and social inclusion, through enabling their engagement in outdoor education, vocational training, and volunteering programmes. Since its establishment in 2006, the Foundation has enabled over 250,000 young people from across the south-east of England to learn, develop and enjoy in nature, including many whose backgrounds and circumstances have previously restricted their access to the natural environment. The Foundation is a recipient of The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, in recognition of its developmental impact on the lives of young people. In 2024/25, the Foundation recorded a total income of £852,977, and a net trading surplus of £81,286.

1.2 The Foundation owns and manages Walton Firs Activity Centre, a fifty-acre facility that provides forty land-based outdoor education activities and residential capacity to accommodate up to 1,100 young people. The activity centre is commissioned by a wide range of children’s and youth service providers and by primary, secondary and SEND schools to deliver high quality curriculum enhancement programmes and outdoor learning activities. In addition, the activity centre directly-delivers a range of services for local young people, including holiday and afterschool activity projects, work experience programmes, and The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In 2024/25, Walton Firs Activity Centre delivered 479 service commissions and engaged 32,000 young people in outdoor learning activities and programmes.

1.3 Currently, the Foundation has six trustees / directors, who work with the company secretary under the leadership of the chairman of the board, to provide oversight and scrutiny of, and support and guidance to, the chief executive officer and the activity centre management team. A group of twenty-five charity patrons provide overview over the trustees / directors.

2. Role Purpose:

2.1 The Trustees / Directors of the Walton Firs Foundation serve simultaneously as a charity trustees and as company directors, and manage statutory duties under the Companies Act 2006. They are responsible for the strategic direction, operational governance, and financial status of the organisation, and work closely with the chief executive officer to ensure the Foundation delivers its charitable objects and activities for the public benefit, in compliance with the Charity Commission’s regulations and company law. The role’s key accountabilities include ensurance of the Foundation’s capacity to manage high-quality outdoor education experiences and facilities for young people, whilst complying with all relevant legislative and regulatory requirements.

7. Additional Information:

7.1 Trustees / Directors are appointed for a term of four years, renewable subject to board approval.

7.2 The Trustee / Director role is unpaid, but reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed where requested.

Overall Purpose of Role

• To ensure on behalf of the Board that Plateful Cafe’s assets are properly managed, only used for approved purposes, and applied as effectively as possible
• Oversee the financial affairs of the organisation and ensure they are legal, constitutional and within accepted accounting practice

Main Responsibilities

• Share the responsibility of jointly reporting the financial position (balance sheet, cash flow, fundraising performance etc).
• Oversee the production of necessary financial reports/returns, accounts and audits and the production of an annual budget and propose its adoption at the last meeting of the previous financial year.
• To ensure that proper accounts and records are kept and that Plateful Cafe meets its legal obligations in respect of its financial affairs and financial reporting
• To ensure that Plateful Cafe’s financial resources are spent in line with good governance and legal and regulatory requirements
• To be jointly instrumental in the development and implementation of Plateful Cafe's financial policies
• To supervise and assist Finance assistants

Main Tasks
- Liaising with the appropriate member(s) of volunteers responsible for Plateful Cafe’s
financial activities and financial record-keeping
- Make members aware of their financial obligations and take a lead in interpreting
financial data to them.
- Monitoring that financial systems and controls are in place and adhered to
- Assist the fundraising team and team with Funding applications with the finance
questions
- Assist with preparing budgets and other financial information for funding bids
- Assist volunteers with the preparation of financial reports for funders
- Acting as a financial spokesperson for Plateful Cafe as appropriate
- Ensure proper records are kept and that effective financial procedures and controls
are in place, ie:

• Cheque signatories
• Purchasing limits

- Appraising the financial viability of plans, proposals and feasibility studies.

- Lead on appointing and liaising with auditors/an independent examiner.

- Undertake bookkeeping duties and/or oversee the finance volunteer ensuring posting
and bookkeeping is kept up-to-date.

- Maintain the petty cash system and regularly process petty cash claims.

- Regularly carry out reconciliations/ oversee regular reconciliations by the finance
volunteer.

- Arrange payments to creditors as appropriate and arrange appropriate signatures on
payments.

- Make the necessary arrangements to collect payments from debtors and bank
payments promptly.

Join Taunton Brewhouse Board as Finance Trustee, develop skills in charity finance and support us in bringing entertainment and culture to our community.

Having grown substantially over the past 12 years, we are moving into a new era of development.   This includes and celebrates the 50th anniversary of the founding of the theatre which takes place in 2027.

Our current Trustee for Finance retires shortly, and we seek a new Finance/Director to take forward this key area.

As Trustee responsible for Finance, you will have specific responsibilities for

• providing financial guidance to the Board on matters put before it
• chairing quarterly meeting of the F&GP Committee
• oversight of financial management through monthly meetings with senior finance team
• liasing with professional advisers as necessary

You will share with other trustees the regular responsibilities for all:

• agree strategy and goals for the charity and Taunton Brewhouse
• appoint and set salarie for senior management
• give oversight and support to management
• ensure due diligence in regulatory matters including safe-guarding
• pay attention to financial management

Apart from time commitments indicated for Finance, the Board meets quarterly on Monday evenings with other meetings as necessary (sometimes on line).  There is an annual 'away-day' for trustees and the AGM which takes place in November.

This role involves leading on HR within the organisation. This involves ensuring the highest standards of governance in policies and practice related to employee relations, recruitment, retention, reward, and recognition, as well as staff and trustee development.  It is the responsibility of the HR trustee to assess risks and measure the impact of HR interventions, implement organisational policies and practices in the context of furthering charitable objectives and evaluating how they impact beneficiaries and staff.  The HR trustee also needs to ensure the long-term strategic oversight of the organisation’s personnel and staffing requirements in relation to the overarching goals of the charity. 

 Key tasks:

• To review and recommend current and future strategic resourcing, training and development and annual budgets and plans to the Trustee Board 

• To actively contribute to policy setting, strategic direction, goal and target setting, and evaluate performance against targets, budgets, plans and charitable objectives 

• To ensure that HR activities and interventions are linked to the organisation’s charitable objectives and complement the organisational culture 

• To ensure the Trustee Board monitors and reviews the performance of staff and identifies appropriate development opportunities 

• To monitor whether the service complies with its governing document and standards and if the needs of the beneficiaries are being met

Other responsibilities, along with the Board of Trustees, include:  

• To manage the charity’s resources responsibly, including ensuring the charity’s assets are used only to carry out its purpose, avoid undue risk and not over-commit the charity.

• To ensure the board regularly reviews its structures, roles, relationship to staff and implementing changes if and when necessary.

• To develop a long-term strategy for the food bank with clear objectives which can be monitored and adapted.

• To work alongside the Treasurer and the board to ensure the organisation’s financial dealings are systematically accounted for and on time, independently examined and made publicly available when necessary.

• To ensure the charity is accountable, actively complying with statutory accounting and reporting requirements and the law. 

• To help promote the organisation to a wide audience of potential funders and beneficiaries and community stakeholders.

• To ensure the food bank has appropriate procedures to: comply with current legislation and good practice; including employment, health and safety, equal opportunities etc.

• To act with reasonable care and skill, giving your time, thought and energy to your role.

• To prepare for and regularly attend and participate in board and subcommittee meetings and any trustee away days.

• To provide ad hoc support to the staff team and volunteers from time to time.

• To act at all times in accordance with the foodbank’s trustee code of conduct.

The Trustees may also undertake additional work for the charity between meetings subject to their availability and skill set.

The opportunity

We are seeking a dynamic Chair of Trustees to lead East London Waterworks Park for three years, with the possibility to remain on the board for two further terms of three years. This is a rare opportunity to join a pioneering environmental charity and to work with the first paid Chief Executive Office to shape this next phase of our development.

The new Chair will have the opportunity to recruit new and additional trustees to create a board that provides appropriate strategic scrutiny of the charity’s work, strengthening our ability to realise our ambition to purchase the Thames Water depot side in East London, and our capacity to deliver community-led rewilding and nature-recovery projects across London in partnership with landowners, local authorities and other stakeholders. Migrateful is looking for new Trustees to help guide our next chapter! Migrateful runs cookery classes in London and Bristol led by refugees and migrants to support them on their journey to integration & employment.

Trustees play a vital role in setting strategic direction, strengthening governance and acting as critical friends to the executive team, ensuring Migrateful continues to deliver high quality, impactful work in line with its charitable purpose.

We are currently looking for a trustee with a strong local network in Bristol to support the organisation’s growth and profile in the city. This trustee will work closely with the CEO and the Business Development and Operations Manager in Bristol to help build strategic partnerships and opportunities. They will also contribute to the Business Development, Marketing and Sales Subcommittee, which meets twice a year.

Trustees play a pivotal role in ensuring Migrateful can continue to grow and deliver meaningful impact for migrant and refugee communities. They will help support the continued expansion of our cookery class programme, which provides vital training, employment and integration opportunities, and a platform for migrant-led cultural exchange.

Role description

The Board of Trustees (“the Board”) is the ultimate governing body of the charity. Working together as members of the Board, Trustees have control of NYO’s property and funds and are responsible for the determination of major strategic, financial and artistic policies; approval of the annual business plan and budget; appointment of the Chief Executive; approval of trustee appointments; and the framework of risk and internal control.

Key responsibilities

Governance & compliance

• Ensure NYO pursues its charitable purposes for public benefit and complies with its governing documents, charity law, company law, and relevant regulations. 
• Manage resources responsibly: protect assets, approve budgets and annual accounts, and oversee financial controls and reserves. 

• Ensure accountability and transparency, including fair, clear reporting in the Trustees’ Annual Report and financial statements. 
• Uphold the Charity Governance Code’s recommended practices for an effective board team and culture. 

Strategy, performance & risk

• Contribute to NYO’s strategy and monitor delivery against objectives; scrutinise performance information and challenge constructively. 
• Identify and manage principal risks; satisfy yourself that systems exist to mitigate them. 

Conduct & conflicts

• Adhere to board ways of working and the Trustee Code of Conduct. Participate in annual board evaluations and training.
• Handle information in accordance with NYO’s data protection and confidentiality policies.
• Declare and manage conflicts of interest and related‑party matters, completing annual declarations and updating the register as needed.

Safeguarding, EDI and culture

• Promote a safeguarding culture; complete annual training; and monitor safeguarding information at board level.
• Champion equality, diversity and inclusion, including accessible meetings and recruitment practices consistent with the Charity Governance Code. 
  
  

Engagement & fundraising

• Play an active role in developing NYO’s networks. Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including donors, sponsors, and partners.
• Support fundraising initiatives and help open doors through your networks.

Additional specialist responsibilities

In addition to the responsibilities that apply to all trustees, this specialist trustee will be expected to:

• Provide insight on the realities young people face today, including barriers to participation and progression, and what helps teenagers thrive in arts and education settings.
• Engage with and help NYO develop its approach to youth voice, across a portfolio including opportunities for agency, ambassadorship, meaningful input into decisions, and building confidence through leadership opportunities.
• Support board-level safeguarding oversight, with particular awareness of safeguarding responsibilities within large-scale youth projects and residential environments.
• Contribute to strategic thinking about inclusion, participation and progression, recognising that when a teenager finds something they love they need opportunities to progress and to explore whether it could be part of their future.

Person Specification

All trustees are expected to demonstrate the following:

• Commitment to NYO’s mission and values, including youth voice.

• Willingness to constructively challenge and devote the necessary time and effort.
• Understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities and liabilities of trusteeship.

• Ability to work effectively as a member of a team.

Time commitment

• Attend quarterly Board meetings and ad hoc/standing committee meetings as required
• Attend a board away day every 1-2 years
• Visit at least one NYO residency or project a year and attend key donor events (3-4 evenings per year)
• Participate in induction sessions and attend annual safeguarding training.

Quarterly board meetings usually take place on weekday afternoons (forthcoming: 14 May, 8 July, 22 October 2026 at 3.00 – 5.30pm)

Term of office

• Four‑year term, renewable once on invitation from the Chair.

Trustee vacancy - Youth Development / Education Specialist

The National Youth Orchestra (NYO) is appointing a specialist trustee to strengthen our Board’s insight into what helps teenagers flourish through exceptional arts and music opportunities.

We welcome applications from people with experience in secondary education, youth-focused arts organisations, youth services, or programmes within the music education sector (or closely related fields). Knowledge of secondary education policy and networks is particularly desirable.

Progressive Farming Trust is looking for new board members

Progressive Farming Trust is a charity working to advance collective knowledge and practice in environmentally sensitive and organic farming.

We focus on three main areas:

• Enhancing knowledge exchange, education, and training that drive on-farm action
• Supporting farm businesses to adopt more resilient and sustainable models
• Strengthening shorter, fairer supply chains that empower both farmers and consumers

To help deliver these priorities we run:

• Agricology, a free information hub where farmers and growers can access practical guidance about sustainable agriculture
• Dean Organic Fund, offering small interest free loans to organic farmers

Established in 1980, the Trust has a long history of supporting progressive farming. For many years we worked as the Organic Research Centre, and following a de-merger in September 2025, we have refocused our activities and are now developing a new strategy to guide our future work.

We are recruiting up to four new volunteer Directors to join our Board and help strengthen the organisation. The Board currently meets quarterly (around one day every three months), either in person or online.

Dive into lasting impact: Fundraise for East London Waterworks Park to create and shape natural swimming ponds, ecological habitats and community gardens

East London Waterworks Park is a volunteer-led charity that has won a 2024 New London Architecture award and raised £2m towards buying land from the Department for Education to transform the 14-acre Thames Water Depot on Lea Bridge Road on the border of Waltham Forest and Hackney, into a new biodiverse park with natural swimming ponds, forest schools and community spaces. 

If you are a good writer and seller of ideas, would you like to join our mini-team of funding bid writers? We would especially love to hear from you if you have experience of writing funding applications, and we are happy to share the skills we have developed with you if you would like to learn.

The Fundraising Circle currently meets fortnightly on a Thursday evening on Google Meet and spends voluntary time outside of the meeting completing agreed tasks remotely. We understand that people may not have a lot of time to give, so we want to find volunteers who could give us one-off or ongoing strategic advice and support.

If you have experience in writing grants and funding applications, corporate fundraising, philanthropy, or any other aspect of fundraising, it would be great to hear from you. 

We are keen fundraisers but we are lacking professional expertise and experience and we would love your help and input. We would welcome one-off advice on the phone or in person, as well as longer term volunteers. 

We would also love to hear from potential volunteers without experience but with transferable skills.

East London Waterworks Park is an exciting and ambitious project that offers many rewarding opportunities for our volunteers. You will have a significant impact on the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds and forest schools. 

By leading fundraising projects that explore how diverse professionals (architects, ecologists, web developers, community researchers etc.) collaborate to shape community infrastructure, volunteers will directly contribute to the development of a park that truly reflects the needs and desires of the local community. 

Without funding we won’t be able to make it happen. Your input will help us craft experiences that inspire, educate, and engage our service users, stakeholders, funders, and the general public, ultimately driving support for the park's mission and ensuring its long-term sustainability. So you will be directly contributing to the creation of a new biodiverse community-owned park with free access natural swimming ponds.

Hay Festival Foundation Ltd. (HFF) is an internationally recognised charity, founded in Hay-on-Wye in Wales 38 years ago, operating in the UK and abroad. The British Acupuncture Council​​​​​​​ is seeking to recruit two Lay Directors to join our Governing Board to replace the directors who stood down in 2025.

The ideal candidates will have previous experience as a non-executive director or trustee of a charity, company or community interest company, an understanding of regulatory compliance requirements and the experience of working with a strategic risk management structure.

The successful applicants will also have a keen interest in acupuncture and a passion for promoting it as a valid healthcare choice.

· Willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to the BAcC, with a focus on your area of expertise.

Additionally, we are seeking individuals with specific skills and expertise in one or both of the following areas:

Business development and fundraising 

· Experience in business development and income diversification especially within the health and well being sector.

· Experience of identifying and critically assessing strategic opportunities and threats and developing effective organisational strategies.

· Oversight to drive income generation strategy and apply objective scrutiny to complex funding initiatives within a highly regulated healthcare sector.

Healthcare management

· In-depth experience and understanding of the wider UK health and wellbeing sector.

· Senior level management experience in a complex organisation (ideally NHS).

· Extensive network and connections with stakeholders within the healthcare sector, including policy-makers.

· Experience in membership services and public relations.

Commitment

Four Governing Board meetings per year.
One additional away day and attendance at annual conference.
Ad-hoc interim meetings by agreement.
Committee participation by agreement.
