HSR UK is a small but ambitious charity dedicated to strengthening the role of health and social care research in policy and practice. We bring together researchers, service leaders, clinicians, policymakers, patient partners and others, helping research to drive real improvement in the NHS and social care.
We are now seeking three new Trustees to join our friendly and committed Board and help shape the next phase of our development.

HSR UK is the collective voice for health services and social care research in the UK.

- Connect and convene researchers, policymakers, managers, clinicians, and lived‑experience partners.
- Support the use of high‑quality research in practice and policy.
- Influence national agendas to help health and social care research thrive.
We have around 40 organisational members, run an annual conference attracting 350+ delegates, and lead work on mentoring, special interest groups, and major thematic projects such as equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) and workforce research. We are hosted by the Nuffield Trust but we are a separate organisation.

You do not need to be an academic or professional researcher. We welcome a wide range of expertise, including people newer to board roles.With the board meeting mainly online, we also welcome candidates from all over the UK.
We’re especially interested in candidates with skills or experience in:
- Business development or income generation (e.g., grants, commissioning, fundraising, third sector)
- Health or social care delivery, including clinical, managerial or lived‑experience backgrounds
- Public involvement, co‑production or inclusive research
- Finance or governance
You will also bring:
- An interest in how research can improve health and care
- Good listening skills and openness to diverse perspectives
- A willingness to constructively challenge and be challenged
- Enthusiasm for our aims and values, including a commitment to EDI
What the role involves
As a Trustee, you will contribute to:
- Setting and monitoring HSR UK’s strategic direction
- Ensuring strong governance and compliance
- Approving major decisions, policies, and annual accounts
- Considering and managing organisational risk
- Actively participating in board meetings and reading papers in advance
- Leading on a specific area of work (e.g., finance, conferences, events, governance), depending on your interests and skills
Practical details
Time commitment
- Around ½–1 day per month
- Five 90‑minute board meetings per year (online) plus our AGM in the autumn
- Option to join sub‑committees (1–2 meetings per year)
- Opportunity to help shape our annual conference and attend the conference in person

This is a voluntary role. We reimburse trustee out of pocket expenses, including travel to meetings and conference attendance

Role Description
The role of the Chair leads the Board, ensuring its effectiveness in setting the organisation’s culture and direction, and maintaining high standards of governance. The Chair also manages the Head of the staff team to deliver the strategy, workplans and objectives. The Chair of the Board shares the same legal responsibilities as other members of the Board.

- Lead the Board in setting and promoting the strategic direction of Fair Trade Wales, ensuring good governance and holding staff to account.

Space Youth Services offer a wide range of youth sessions across Devon, providing safe, inclusive spaces for young people aged 11-19. Whether it's at a youth centre (open access), online youth centre, SEND sessions, LGBTQ sessions, their OFSTED registered school 'Chances' or street-based youth activities, they create environments where young people can engage, learn, and connect. Their activities give young people "somewhere to go, something to do, and someone to talk to."
They operate from eight well equipped Youth and Community Centres across Devon, located in Bideford, Okehampton, Barnstaple, Tiverton, Exmouth, Exeter, Ottery St Mary, and Newton Abbot, as well as their alternative education school, Chances in Dawlish. They utilise a fleet of mobile youth buses to run their services and reach more young people.
Over 3000 young people directly used their services in the last year. Many more thousands are supported through their support to over 40 other youth organisations They have approximately 100 dedicated staff, most of whom are part time. Their annual turnover is approx. £3.5m.
They are now seeking to appoint a new independent Trustee and are looking for individuals who will rise to the challenge, be forward thinking and steer the future development of Space.
Trustee Responsibilities for Space Youth Services:
● Time Commitment: Attend a 2–3-hour evening meeting every other month and an annual strategy day.
● Work closely with the Chair and other Trustees during your term.
● Ensure Space follows its governing document and uses resources only for its stated objectives.
● Contribute to setting policy, guiding the CEO, and evaluating organisational performance.
● Also become a registered director of the company (limited by guarantee) via Companies House.

The Role:
We are currently seeking a Finance Trustee to join our Board as Treasurer. It’s a voluntary role that requires a committed individual with financial expertise to take a collaborative approach, supporting our Trustees, our Head of Finance and Governance, and our management team to oversee the financial affairs of our charity and ensure that they are legal, constitutional, and within accepted accounting practice.

Treasurer Role:
The primary role is to ensure alongside other Trustees that they accept ultimate responsibility for the affairs of G&C and ensure that it is solvent, well run, and delivering the charitable outcomes for which it has been set up. As well as fulfilling the duties of a Trustee, the Treasurer ensures that effective and appropriate financial measures, controls, and procedures are put in place and reports to the Board at regular intervals about the financial health of the organisation.
- Overseeing the presentation of budgets, internal management accounts, and annual financial statements, as produced by the finance team or others where appropriate, to the Board of Trustees
- Ensuring that proper accounting records are kept, and that appropriate accounting procedures and controls are in place.
- Liaising with any paid staff about financial matters, as appropriate.
- Ensuring that robust and comprehensive financial policies are in place and being implemented, and supporting the development of policies covering financial reserves, and cost management.
- Overseeing financial controls and adherence to systems.
- Drawing any major financial concerns to the attention of the trustee and the management team.
- Ensuring that the charity has appropriate reserves in line with its reserves policy, and monitoring and advising on the financial viability of the charity.
- Advising on the financial implications of the charity’s strategic plan, including overseeing the charity’s financial risk-management process.
- Ensuring that the charity has an appropriate investment policy and that investments and assets are maximised.
- Leading on the appointment of and liaison with external auditors.
- Overseeing the development and implementation of systems for appraising, mitigating, and reporting corporate risk.
- Ensuring that the accounts are prepared and disclosed in the form required by relevant statutory bodies – for example, the Charity Commission and/or the Registrar of Companies.
- Keeping the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities.
- Supporting other Trustees in understanding the charity’s financial position and decision making.
- Contributing to the fundraising strategy of the charity and its ethical fundraising policy.
- Making a formal presentation of the accounts at the Annual General Meeting and drawing attention to important points in a coherent and easily understandable way.
The Person We’re Looking For:
- A finance professional with a firm understanding of charity finance and some experience of fundraising and pension schemes.
- Knowledge of charity fundraising, bid writing, and/or other income generation and/or securing funding through creation or leveraging of partnerships and networks (at a national or local level).
- A strategic thinker with an ability to balance risk and opportunity and the skills to analyse proposals and examine their financial consequences.
- Clear communicator with the ability to explain financial information to members of the Board and other stakeholders.
