Healthwatch Islington is led by local people interested in making health and care services as good as they can be.

We speak to local residents about their experiences of accessing health and care services to understand patient experience across the borough. We use this information to influence health and care commissioning in and around Islington and to provide residents with information about local services and their rights to access them. We are part of the Healthwatch network across England.

We are looking for people with a connection to Islington who would like to join our exciting volunteer team.

The role of a volunteer Health Champion:

We are looking for people who are friendly, patient and confident talking to new people to help us hear about local people’s experiences of health and care services.

This Health Champion role can include:

• Attending information stands in the community as part of our team and talking to local residents

• Supporting health information workshops or community meetings (notetaking, participant feedback etc.)

• Providing health information about specific campaigns (e.g. cancer awareness, heart health; training will be provided)

All Healthwatch Islington volunteers must attend an induction session and appropriate training before volunteering with us.

Role Description:

Talk to residents and listen to their experiences at health Information stalls and events. These will mainly be in the daytime, Monday-Friday. These activities take place across the borough and require the ability to travel.

As we work with a wide range of residents across our diverse ethnic minority communities, we welcome applications from people with diverse language skills.

Person specification:

· Ability to work well with others

· Ability to explain things clearly and listen without judgment

· Confidence approaching and talking to new people

· Understanding of confidentiality, respecting this at all times

· Availability to participate regularly, often during 9 to 5

Commitment required:

No one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. St John Ambulance teaches people first aid so they can be the difference between life and death, and you can help us do this.

We are seeking Event Paramedics to respond to and manage emergency calls/incidents whilst attending events. At all times provide specialist, clinical, social and holistic care to undertake clinical assessment and interventions those individuals in the pre-hospital environment, which may include stadia, concerts, motorsports, road races etc. This may encompass working on both ambulances / FRV’s and within treatment units as required.

We are looking for volunteer paramedics to join our team! Are you a qualified paramedic and can selflessly give up some of your time to help? Then we have got the role for you! We are looking for paramedics to help us with local events such as Armed Forces Day, Firework Championships, Remembrance Day, Half Marathons and many more. You will become part of a wonderful, friendly and goal driven team to deliver the best medical care we can. You will be on hand to help during patients time of need, and be required to assist in transferring them to the hospital if required, and handing over to hospital staff. Role summary

To participate as a member of the Catering Team involved in the provision of care to the patients, families and staff. Work alongside both the nursing and catering staff ensuring good communication and liaise between these areas. As this role will involve close contact with Hospice patients, an enhanced adult and child DBS check will need to be carried out before a start date can be offered.

Main duties of the role

• Wear appropriate clothing, enclosed shoes, supplied apron and identification badge.

• No jewellery other than a wedding band.

• Collect copy of daily bulletin from Ward Reception.

• Report to the Cook-in-Charge.

• Ensure that Hygiene, Health and Safety, and Fire Regulations are adhered to at all times.

• Be flexible and aware of the needs of the service and assist as appropriate.

• Serve refreshments and meals to patients, visitors and staff.

• Prepare dining room for appropriate meals.

• Be prepared to help in the washing up of cutlery, crockery and kitchen utensils.

• Take the drinks/alcohol trolley round to serve to patients following instruction from clinical staff as to who may be offered drinks.

• Be prepared to collect provisions from local stores if necessary.

• Be willing to assist a patient with food.

• Agree break time with the Duty Cook.

• Ensure area around beds is kept tidy and hazard free by removing crockery food trays as appropriate. (This is particularly important in order to maintain a safe environment and maintaining infection control for patients at all times).

• Maintain confidentiality and data protection at all times.

Role summary

To participate as a member of the Maintenance Team covering general maintenance, domestic and health and safety duties. A good level of fitness is required for this role.

Main duties of the role

• To undertake simple maintenance tasks such as painting, PPM (planned preventative maintenance), erecting shelving, etc

• To undertake tasks such as sweeping external areas, jet washing of car park, removal of weeds, Hedge trimming,

• To assist the maintenance team with the delivery of goods to other hospice sites

• To assist the maintenance team with the setting up and down of rooms for meetings, ensuring all furniture and equipment requested is supplied

• To report any maintenance, security or health and safety issues to the maintenance team

• To always wear personal protective equipment required for any task

• To liaise with contractors and suppliers as required

• To respect at all times the confidentiality of information

• To respect at all times the confidentiality of information covering patients, staff and volunteers 

• To conduct any other maintenance duties as requested by the Estates & Facilities team

Experience & qualifications required

• Experience of working in a maintenance or caretaking capacity is desirable 

• Knowledge or skills acquired through a hobby relevant and transferable to the role

At St John Ambulance, we are looking to develop our volunteering offer and become an even more integral part of our communities through delivering community first aid and education.

Whether that be at the bigger events such as British Firework Championships and Armed Forces Day, or whether that be at smaller local events such as fetes, local farm summer fairs, school fayres, or a regular Saturday at Plymouth Albion Rugby. You could have the opportunity to become part of a wonderful team at our Plymouth Network, delivering a higher scope of clinical practice and giving back to the community. What you will contribute

Provide medical consultations and treatment for our Crew, including regular check-ups, routine health screenings, and emergency care when needed

Support the health education to our Crew and host country partners by presenting on applicable health related topics

Ensure the health and safety of the Crew on an ongoing basis, in collaboration with the Captain

Work with and supervise the Hospital Physician(s) to oversee the general health of Ward patients and pre-operative patients

For This Role, You Will Need

M.D. or D.O. with current unrestricted license or recognized medical qualification in your country of origin

Fluent in verbal and written communication skills in English

Practices the highest standards of fiscal control

Computer skills, especially in Word and Excel

If the Crew Physician sails with the ship: Successful completion of Basic Training in accordance with STCW A-VI/1-1 to 1-4, as required per Maritime Law

Cadet Group Leaders work directly with young people in St John Ambulance Badger Setts and Cadet Units. By organising a mixed weekly programme, this role will support the learning and development of young people into the next generation of health citizens. Youth Leaders also help young people develop their confidence, teamwork skills, self-discipline, and generally encourage them to strive to be the best they can be, as well as supervise and support other adult volunteers in their team.

This will mainly involve working in mobile treatment centres or temporary event medical centres.

Successful candidates will be registered medical practitioners with the GMC, without cautions or restrictions, and hold a licence to practice outside of an approved practice setting.

As a health professional volunteer, you would support our First Aid teams with patients who need more complex assessment or treatment, prescription medications or admission to hospital. 

We would warmly welcome you into our clinical team, provide all your training, uniform and equipment and offer you a great chance to work as part of a friendly prehospital care team, with good clinical support from experienced colleagues. 

You would join our group of over 20 Kent doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and paramedics who already give their time to volunteer with St John Ambulance. 

We have clinicians of all specialities in our teams and are happy to provide clinical supervision for those in training grades. 

We understand how tiring your work shifts can be, and that your duty to your NHS patients will always come first, and we can offer you flexibility around volunteering shifts as well as paid travel to, and accommodation at events.

We want enthusiastic people to help us support our networks youth programme and build a youth strong team

Young people play a crucial role in helping us realise this mission. As a volunteer with our youth teams, you’ll be trained to provide our young people with both life skills and lifesaving skills – all while having great fun!

You’ll be working with our brilliant Badgers (aged 7-10) or creative Cadets (aged 11-18). You’ll also have the opportunity to design your own role, whether that involves running fun activities – such as outdoor events, summer camps and mountain adventures – or providing ‘behind-the-scenes’ support.

We’ll offer you the chance to become a fully-fledged Youth Leader, which will mean completing extra courses in First Aid or Adventure to broaden your capacity and experience.

Prospective volunteers will be expected to undertake the full training package for Community First Aider, enabling them to support event healthcare delivery in the community. This role carries a minimum commitment of 80 hours per year. Volunteers are encouraged to keep their skills current by attending regular network training sessions, which take place weekly on Tuesday evenings.
