Fort Amherst Heritage Trust cares for Fort Amherst in Chatham, Kent, preserving an important historic site and making it available for the benefit, enjoyment and education of the wider community. The Trust relies heavily on volunteers to help maintain, restore, interpret and promote the site for present and future generations.
Role Purpose
Trustees are collectively responsible for the governance, strategic direction and long-term sustainability of Fort Amherst Heritage Trust. As a Trustee, you will help ensure that the charity fulfils its charitable purposes, complies with its legal duties and makes decisions in the best interests of the Trust and the communities it serves.
Key Responsibilities
· Work with fellow Trustees to set and review the Trust’s vision, strategy and priorities.
· Ensure the Trust carries out its charitable purposes for the public benefit.
· Oversee the responsible management of the Trust’s finances, assets, buildings, grounds and collections.
· Support good governance by complying with the Trust’s governing document, charity law and relevant regulations.
· Monitor risks, policies and procedures, including health and safety, safeguarding, finance, data protection and volunteer management.
· Contribute to discussions and decisions at Board meetings, reading papers in advance and offering constructive challenge and support.
· Act as an ambassador for Fort Amherst, promoting its heritage, community value and volunteer-led work.
· Support fundraising, partnership development and community engagement where appropriate.
· Declare and manage any conflicts of interest and maintain confidentiality where required.
Skills and Experience
We welcome applications from people with a commitment to heritage, community benefit and good governance. Previous trustee experience is helpful but not essential. The Trust is particularly interested in people who can bring one or more of the following areas of experience:
· Heritage, museums, archives, conservation or historic buildings.
· Finance, fundraising, grant applications or business planning.
· Education, learning, interpretation or visitor experience.
· Volunteer management, community engagement or inclusion.
· Marketing, communications, events or digital engagement.
· Legal, governance, risk management, health and safety or safeguarding.
· Property, estates, facilities management or environmental stewardship.
Personal Qualities
· A genuine interest in Fort Amherst, local heritage and public benefit.
· Sound judgement, integrity and a willingness to act collectively with other Trustees.
· Ability to think strategically while understanding practical operational challenges.

Detailed description
We are looking for Volunteer Administrators for the following locations:
Broadwater Family Centre, Stevenage
Windmill Family Centre, Hemel Hempstead
Sopwell Family Centre, St Albans
Westfield & Littlebury Family Centre, Watford
The BECC Family Centre, Borehamwood
Main responsibilities
·Welcome families, visitors, and professionals to the Family Centre in a friendly and professional manner.
·Answer telephone calls and take messages accurately.
·Assist staff with administrative tasks such as photocopying, filing, and preparing resources.
·Input data into systems, ensuring accuracy and confidentiality.
·Help maintain an organised and tidy reception and office space.
·Support the preparation of publicity materials, newsletters, and information displays.
·Signpost visitors to the appropriate staff member for further support.
·Uphold safeguarding, confidentiality, and health & safety policies at all times.
Skills / Abilities / Experience / Qualities
·Friendly, welcoming, and professional manner.
·Good organisational and communication skills.
·Basic IT skills (Microsoft Office, email, internet)
·Reliable, punctual, and able to work as part of a team.
·Respectful of confidentiality and sensitive information.

Job Description
Join the Boards of the Mary Ward Settlement, the Mary Ward Legal Centre and the Blackfriars Settlement at a pivotal time for the charities, as the Settlement has relocated to purpose-built accommodation in Stratford. The Mary Ward Settlement has a proud heritage as part of the Settlement Movement which developed in the late 19th Century as a response to urban poverty and social problems arising from industrialisation. Mary Ward founded the Settlement in 1892 to “provide public education and social service for the benefit of the community” at a time and in an area where great wealth and great deprivation stood side by side, much as they do today – the Settlement’s work continues to be important.
Currently the Settlement delivers its services via:
· The Mary Ward Centre – an Institute of Adult Learning and an adult and community learning provider offering a wide range of learning opportunities for local and pan London residents funded primarily by the Greater London Authority. Most accredited provision is at Level 2 or below in Essential Skills (ESOL, English and Maths and Digital Skills. There is also a significant and thriving non-accredited offer of courses ranging from 12 weeks to one day workshops, the majority of which are Art and Design.
· The Mary Ward Legal Centre – providing free specialist legal advice on housing, welfare benefits and debt. We also provide free legal advice as part of our pro bono clinic in the areas of employment, housing, small claims, consumer, and family.
· The Blackfriars Settlement – providing services to the community including health and well-being for older people, and mental health and wellbeing services to support people achieve their goals and stay well.
The Settlement is looking for people who are passionate about social justice, lifelong learning and education, and the importance of strong local communities to foster wellbeing for all. This is an opportunity to:

About The Role
Volunteers are integral to the running of our beautiful WWT Arundel Wetland Centre, an award-winning site for accessible and inclusive tourism. Our volunteer team is friendly, motivated, and hard-working, and benefit from gaining new experiences, meeting new people, and making a difference by helping maintain our important wetland habitat.
In this role, you’ll be supporting our Marketing, Learning, and Facilities teams to stay on top of day-to-day essentials and keep organized behind the scenes. Responsibilities will include compiling the information we use to inspire visitors to support wetlands, responding quickly to supporter queries, and helping to provide information online to encourage visitors to support us and connect with nature.
If you enjoy an office environment where you can focus on detailed work, self-led tasks, and computer databases, then this is the role for you! Alongside this, you will have the opportunity to meet new like-minded colleagues and enjoy our beautiful outdoor reserve.
Volunteers are an essential part of the WWT team, and we wouldn’t be able to maintain our internationally important wetland sites without their help. You will receive a very warm welcome, full induction & training, and be provided with any necessary equipment, uniforms, and anything else needed to thrive in your role.

No previous experience is required for this role as full training will be provided, and a willingness to learn new skills is more important.
