Learning volunteer roles

Across the UK, our volunteer groups play a vital part in supporting people affected by MS, bringing people together and connecting our local MS communities.

As a Communications Volunteer you’ll play a key role in promoting your group to people in your area affected by MS, and helping them feel connected. You could be editing newsletters, responding to information requests, or developing engaging content for social media — depending on what the group needs. 

In this role you’ll develop your writing skills, and gain experience of communicating across a range of digital channels. Most importantly you’ll be helping us engage with lots of people and get the word out to people with MS about support to help them live their lives to the full.

We fundraise so we can run services and support for people with MS, and fund our groundbreaking research programme that aims to stop MS altogether. As a Fundraising Events Volunteer, you’ll help us deliver fun and exciting fundraising events. Your responsibilities can include helping with preparation and setting up, registration, meeting and greeting people, marshalling, and stewarding and supporting our fundraising events participants. In this role you’ll develop your communication, organisation and team working skills. 

What you’ll be doing:

• Participating in fundraising events throughout the year, with some involvement in preparations on the day
• Cheering on our team at one of our cheer points to give them a much needed boost
• Meeting and greeting, marshalling or stewarding
• Helping at registration desk for larger events

Support young people in exploring technology, design, and innovation through activities such as 3D printing, digital design, maker projects, coding, and creative problem-solving. Volunteers will assist staff in delivering engaging sessions that encourage curiosity, experimentation, and learning in a safe environment.

Volunteer Drivers: 

We are looking for regular and occasional volunteer drivers to provide safe and friendly transportation for our older members to and from our centre. A D1 License would be required for the role. We can provide additional free training through MiDAS. Each driver is accompanied with a Passenger Assistant to assist with navigation, phone calls, and assisting members.

We have two wheelchair-accessible shuttle buses which are stored on our premises. Each bus is wheelchair accessible and accommodates 8 service users, 1 passenger assistant, and 1 driver. Our service users are primarily located in Deptford, Lewisham, and Greenwich.

About Deptford Mission 

Our charity is called Deptford Mission, located on 1 Creek Road, London. Our organisation operates a day centre three days a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) that provides social activities and community support for older persons in the community. We run a shuttle bus service that transports older persons to our centre, where they can enjoy a three-course lunch, coffee and tea service, and activities such as bingo, musical classes, chair yoga, and occasional local outings. Our day centre is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10:00am to 3:00pm. 

We work with volunteers from diverse backgrounds and walks of life and can accommodate individuals with learning differences, complex histories, and support needs. We also provide lunch to our volunteers during their shifts, and we are happy to help support specific skills that they may wish to develop. Many of our volunteers have obtained experience and confidence to pursue employment in social care, health care, and higher education.

Volunteers are essential to Shannon Trust and bring their energy, ideas and skills to train mentors in prisons, support learners in the community and enhance our business support team.

We are looking for volunteers to provide training and support to our mentors in prison. There may be some additional preparation and/ or administrative tasks in between volunteering days at the prison.

Our prison volunteers nurture the growth of the Shannon Trust in their prison. They help unlock the power of reading by delivering training sessions for prison mentors and offering ongoing advice, guidance and support through mentor meetings.

Volunteer recruitment dates

The closing date for applications to attend our next round of training is 6 September 2026. In some circumstances, volunteer vacancies may close early. Successful applicants will be sent interview questions in advance with notice to prepare. We will respond to all applications. Successful applicants will be invited to an interview between 7 and 18 September 2026. This is an opportunity for you to meet our regional team, to find out more about you and for us to share more information about the volunteering role.

Training:

You'll be given high quality training to prepare you for volunteering with Shannon Trust. This takes place over 4 training sessions and via our online training portal. We ask that volunteers aim to complete the training in one course as this means that you will be ready to start actively volunteering. The next training sessions for volunteering for people applying to be a prison based volunteer will take place as follows.

You’ll also receive the opportunity to attend ongoing training sessions and peer support meetings during your time as a volunteer to build your skills and experience.

Why we want you

Shannon Trust’s vision is of a future where everyone can experience the positive impact of learning. As a prison volunteer your role will be at the heart of our organisation as you support our mentors in prisons. This will include delivering training to new mentors and supporting existing mentors to develop and deliver our Turning Pages and Count Me In programmes. You will be volunteering alongside Shannon Trust facilitators and / or frontline prison staff to empower mentors and ensure no one is left out of learning.

• Supporting facilitators to engage prison staff and people in prison to set-up, maintain and develop the Shannon Trust reading and numeracy programmes across the whole prison, and contributing to progress planning for how to progress and achieve this
• Using your skills to build positive relationships with frontline prison staff, people in prison and other organisations
• Training and supporting mentors to collect and submit data and learner feedback
• Supporting with the planning of, and attendance at, celebration events
• Collecting and sharing good news stories and feedback
• Attending area meetings and sharing good practice with other volunteers
• Engaging with quarterly reviews to receive support and discuss progress
• Acting as an ambassador for Shannon Trust in all that you do, sharing the vision and values of the charity throughout your volunteering

The skills you need

• A commitment to providing non-judgemental support to people in prison
• Able to give a regular, reliable commitment for ideally two years and have flexibility to visit the prison at times required
• Strong communication skills and are able to use these to inspire others
• Able to deliver engaging training and identify training and support needs for mentors
• Able to manage own time and prioritise
• Able to keep up to date with Shannon Trust news and communications and share relevant information with the wider prison team

PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

There are currently four Committees that report directly to the Board of Trustees, one of them is the Safeguarding Committee, of which you will be a member.

The Safeguarding Committee provides assurance, advice, and recommendations to the Board on safeguarding matters.

The Committee provides strategic leadership, ownership and oversight of The Scout Association (TSA)’s safeguarding policies and procedures, and ensures that safeguarding policies, procedures and practice remain fit for purpose and sector leading in protecting young people in Scouting.

The Committee also provides strategic oversight, challenge and assurance in relation to TSA’s safeguarding arrangements, including the safeguarding of adults where relevant.

The Independent Member aged 18-24 brings a young adult perspective to Committee discussions and helps ensure that the experiences, views and needs of young people are considered in safeguarding strategy, policy, practice and assurance. The role is not operational: it is a strategic governance and assurance role, with support, induction and mentoring provided.

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

· Provide a young adult perspective to Committee discussions and decision-making.

· Ensure that the perspectives, experiences and voices of young people are reflected in safeguarding discussions, policy development and Committee decision-making.

· Help ensure the experiences and views of young people are considered in safeguarding strategy, policy and practice.

· Contribute to discussions on safeguarding risk, assurance, organisational learning and continuous improvement.

· Support the Committee’s consideration of emerging safeguarding issues affecting young people, including risks in online and digital environments.

· Assist the Committee in reviewing safeguarding performance, learning and assurance information.

· Contribute to the Committee’s review of safeguarding assurance activity, quality assurance findings, thematic reviews, and organisational learning arising from safeguarding incidents and case reviews.

· Contribute ideas and constructive challenge to help improve safeguarding across Scouts.

· Support the Committee in ensuring safeguarding arrangements remain fit for purpose and responsive to changing risks.

THE PERSON

Skills

Experience

No previous committee experience is required. The Committee is looking for someone who can demonstrate some of the following.

· An interest in safeguarding and the welfare of young people.

· An interest in digital safeguarding, online safety, digital harms, social media risks or emerging technologies.

· Experience of volunteering, leadership or participation in youth organisations.

· Experience of representing the views of young people or contributing to youth voice activity.

· Education, employment or voluntary experience connected to safeguarding, social care, criminology, law, psychology, education, digital technology, online safety or related fields.

 Characteristics

· Aged 18-24 at the time of appointment.

· Passionate about helping create safer environments for young people.

· Commitment to the values and purpose of Scouts.

· Curiosity, willingness to learn and readiness to contribute.

· Sufficient time available to fulfil the role.

TIME COMMITMENT AND MEETINGS

The Safeguarding Committee normally meets four times per year, with three meetings held virtually and one longer meeting held face-to-face. The appointed member will be expected to read papers in advance and contribute to discussions during meetings. Support, induction and mentoring will be provided.

Applicants should expect to spend around two days per quarter on Committee business after the induction phase, including preparation, attendance and follow-up activity.

APPOINTMENT TERM

Appointments will normally be for three years, subject to a six-month review, and may be extended by mutual agreement provided the individual remains within the 18-24 age range at the start of any subsequent term.

REMUNERATION AND EXPENSES

In common with other registered charities, there is no remuneration directly associated with the role. The Scout Association will reimburse reasonable and properly documented expenses incurred in performing the role in accordance with its Expenses Policy.

Make a meaningful difference by becoming a friendly visitor for a gentleman in his early 70s who, while non-verbal, is active, engaged, and enjoys simple pleasures. He loves doing jigsaws, reading gardening magazines, and watching television. This is a “stop and stay” role where you’ll spend relaxed, quality time together helping with a jigsaw, sharing quiet moments, and offering companionship.

This is a Stop and Stay visit role, meaning that the person you’ll be visiting might have some verbal communication skills or they use sounds and/or facial/body expressions to communicate with you.fr

We offer a lifelong befriending service for adults with learning disabilities. Matching the skills and interests of passionate visitors with the specific hobbies and interests of the people we visit. Visitors visit six times a year to create a 1-2-1 connection, offer companionship, encourage people to do the things they enjoy and check-in on their wellbeing. In many cases, the visitor is the only person in someone’s life who isn’t paid to be there for them.

Your volunteer manager will be happy to help you with ideas and suggestions for things you can do. Visits will vary in length but tend to be around half an hour to an hour long.

In this role you will spend quality time with the person you visit and could do a range of different activities like:

• Sitting and having a chat
• Checking in on their well- being
• A craft activity at home
• Reading a book/magazine together

Dignity Freedom Network (DFN) is active across India. Royal Trinity Hospice's Patient and Family Support team offer psychological support and counselling to individual patients, as well as family members who have been affected by a patient’s illness. 

We are looking for qualified volunteer supervisors to join our Bereavement Service. As a volunteer supervisor, you will provide group supervision to our trainee and qualified volunteer counsellors.

Key responsibilities of the role:

· Facilitating fortnightly/monthly group supervision sessions for trainee and qualified volunteer counsellors

· Creating a safe, supportive and reflective working environment

· Facilitating discussions around client work, ethical dilemmas, and professional development

· Demonstrable experience of counselling theory, practice and ethical guidelines, especially around bereavement and loss

No one should die because they needed first aid and didn’t get it. St John Ambulance teaches people first aid so they can be the difference between life and death, and you can help us do this.

We are looking for people with excellent interpersonal skills to join our Safeguarding team. Safeguarding is central to the work of St John Ambulance because it ensures that the diverse range of services we provide to children and adults at risk of harm, are delivered safely. Safeguarding Team Members do this in a number of ways e.g. by monitoring the implementation of the safeguarding policy, by responding to questions regarding and giving guidance etc.

We are looking for English teachers or tutors to provide one-to-one, group or asynchronous lessons to Palestinians aged 13+ and adults for at least 3 months. All volunteers must complete training before they begin. 

The autumn term will run from 13/09/26 to 20/12/26.

What will you be doing?

• Applying the concepts learned through trauma-informed and emergency education training. 
• Delivering weekly 90-minute lessons, plus 30–60 minutes of preparation for at least 3 months.
• Creating a supportive, positive learning environment.
• Tailoring methods to individual learner needs.

• Filling in a weekly check-in form to track attendance and student progress.

Proficiency in English opens the door to a wider range of work and educational opportunities. Students can work for humanitarian organisations on the ground or find remote opportunities thanks to their English skills. English is also essential for scholarships. Furthermore, proficiency in English enables students to contribute to their community and have their voices heard on the global stage.

A bit about this role

As a charity we can continue to help cats and kittens in need thanks to the donations we receive at fundraising events from generous members of the public. Our fundraising event helpers have the exciting and varied role of helping at local fundraising events - such as cakes sales, barn dances, quiz nights – and everything in between!

However much time you can give, your contribution will help raise much needed funds to continue the work of Cats Protection.
