At Doorstep Library, we’re dedicated to bringing the magic of books and the joy of reading directly into the homes of children who need our support.
With 1 in 4 children in the UK leaving primary school unable to read or write properly, we recruit and train in-person and online volunteers to introduce children from under-resourced areas to the pleasure of reading.
What’s Involved?
As a Doorstep Library reading volunteer, you’ll visit the same families via Zoom every week with eBooks to share with the children and encourage their love of reading.
You will:
- Handpick eBooks from our online portals based on the children’s age, interests, and reading level
- Join families via Zoom with your volunteer partner for 20-minute reading sessions
- Make notes after the session to keep track of how the child/ren are progressing
Our unique home-based approach allows our volunteers to build trusting relationships with families, helping them to connect with the community and equip them with the skills they need to succeed later in life.
When and Where?
You can be based anywhere in the UK to become a Doorstep Library online volunteer.
- Time commitment: One evening a week (Regular Volunteer), one evening every other week (Semi-Regular Volunteer) or once every 3 weeks (Stand-In Volunteer) during school term times
- Hours per week: 2
- Days: Our projects run on Mondays, Tuesdays, or Thursdays from 4:30pm – 6:30pm

Beacon for Rare Diseases hosts The Resources Hub, a 100% free and accessible e-learning platform created to support the rare disease community, including:
- Patient groups, patients and families
- Researchers and life science professionals
- Rare disease advocates
The Resources Hub brings together over 100 free resources, including written courses, video guides, webinars and recordings from events and conferences. These resources are designed to support people at every stage of their rare disease journey, whether they are just getting started or are part of a well-established organisation.
We are incredibly proud of the breadth and quality of what’s available on the Hub. However, much of our long-standing content is under-promoted, meaning that people don’t always find the right resource at the right time.

About the role
We are looking for a social media volunteer to help us shine a light on the wealth of content already available within the Resources Hub.
In this role, you will:
- Spend time exploring our existing Resources Hub content
- Write 1–3 social media posts per resource, tailored for different platforms
- Help us build a reusable library of social media posts that we can draw on to promote resources when they are most relevant
This role is about helping people discover support that already exists, making it easier for patient groups and advocates to find information that could make a real difference to their work.

Who this role would suit
This is a specific, project-based placement and would suit someone who already has experience in communications, social media or content creation.
You’ll be someone who:
- Enjoys writing clear, engaging social media copy
- Understands how to adapt messaging across different platforms
- Is comfortable working independently and managing their own time
- Can take guidance on tone and branding and run with it
While we don’t have capacity to provide training, you won’t be left on your own. We will:
- Provide clear direction on priorities and approach
- Share brand guidance and examples
- Review initial work to make sure everything feels aligned
- Have routine check-ins, provide feedback, and an end-of-placement review

Time commitment and flexibility
This is a fully remote volunteering role, which we ideally hope can be completed within around three months. We anticipate a minimum commitment of approximately two hours per week, though a shorter, more intensive placement could also be arranged to suit the volunteer. We are open to having more than one volunteer on this project and do not expect a single person to work through the entire Hub.
Please note: we are looking for this placement to begin as soon as possible.

We provide an Android AI tool that analyzes cervical images to support frontline screening decisions.
Data Preprocessing Model Specialist-Input Quality & Standardization
About MednTech
MednTech is a nonprofit organization developing AI-powered tools to improve early detection of cervical cancer and expand access to care in underserved communities, particularly in Africa. It works by equipping frontline healthcare providers with accessible technology and partnering with local health systems to improve outcomes and empower patients. We have already implemented our diagnostic model in real-world settings in Rwanda. We are now looking to further improve its performance and robustness before our next deployment, and are currently seeking volunteers to support this initiative.

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable cancers in the world, yet it remains a leading cause of cancer death in low-resource settings simply because screening does not reach the people who need it. Role Overview
Your role will be to aid design and implement a preprocessing model that ensures all incoming cervical images meet strict quality and consistency standards before being passed into downstream models.
Our cervical cancer screening method is dependent on pictures taken using a smartphone, leading to large variation in lighting and cervix positions in the image. On top of natural variances in fluid blockages or rotation and angle or cervix, it’s important that only valid images are run through our model.
Key Responsibilities
- Build automated checks for:
- Lighting normalization
- Blur and focus detection
- Angle and framing validation
- Specular reflection handling
- Develop preprocessing models or heuristics to:
- Enhance image quality (contrast, de-noising)
- Standardize image format, resolution, and scale
- Implement image rejection and acceptance criteria pipeline
- Create a quality scoring system for input images
- Collaborate with CV and ML engineers to optimize preprocessing impact on performance
- Optimize preprocessing for real-world noisy data (mobile capture, low-resource settings)
Required Skills
- Strong background in computer vision fundamentals
- Experience with OpenCV, PIL, or similar image processing libraries
- Understanding of image quality metrics
- Experience building automated data validation pipelines
Preferred Qualifications

All roles are highly collaborative and will work closely across the MednTech AI pipeline
