Volunteering in the shop

Mary's Living & Giving for Save the Children is unique - a vibrant result of the generous gifts of local individuals and companies being turned around by the skills and passions of volunteer teams, to create a destination retail experience. Selling womenswear, menswear, shoes, and bags to household goods, our shops can be found in the London villages and bring in vital funds for Save the Children.

Our East Dulwich Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied. We would also love to hear from people willing to volunteer on Sundays.

It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Time Commitment

• Board meetings take place approximately every 6 weeks
• Meetings last approximately 2 hours
• Most meetings alternate between online and in person in Wimbledon
• The role is voluntary and unpaid, although reasonable expenses can be reimbursed

Our gorgeous shop in historic Windsor has been at the heart of the community since the early 1990’s (it’s truly vintage!) and has in recent years been transformed into a bespoke Mary’s Living & Giving store.

As an Activities Volunteer, you’ll help our group deliver well organised activities and support everyone who takes part. Whether you’re serving refreshments or talking to people, you’ll help everyone feel welcome.

This role will help you develop your organisation, communication and team working skills.

Please note this role will be carried out in the Kendal Area and you must live in the area.

About South Tyneside Adult Recovery Services (STARS)

South Tyneside Adult Recovery Service is the alcohol and drug service in South Tyneside for adults.

South Tyneside Adult Recovery Service is open Monday to Friday 9.00 am - 4.45 pm.

About the role:

• Provide a welcoming meet and greet service to people attending STARS 

• Answer internal phone calls

• Replenish leaflets / resources 

• Create and maintain displays in the waiting area / rooms 

• Copying / printing resources for colleagues

About you:

Due to the location of the printer, applicants will need to be able to walk up and down a flight of stairs to access the printer/copier.

The service is open 9am – 5pm so the role would take place during these hours. 

Confident IT skills as there are mandatory training modules to complete online. 

Applicants must have excellent verbal communication skills, be professional, able to maintain professional boundaries and adhere to Waythrough policies.

Experience of volunteering / working in an admin / reception / customer service role would be desirable.

To have a caring, patient and empathetic nature.

Ability to remain calm and focused in a busy environment.

Maintenance Volunteer

About the Role

As a Maintenance Volunteer, you will help maintain and improve the homes and environments of people with autism, sight loss, and learning disabilities. Your support will help create safe, comfortable, and welcoming spaces where people can thrive.

This role involves practical tasks such as painting, decorating, gardening, and general DIY. Please note that electrical, plumbing, and gas work are not included in this volunteer role.

 The Difference You Will Make

By volunteering, you will help to:

• Improve the appearance and comfort of people's homes.
• Create safe and welcoming environments.
• Support people to feel proud of where they live.
• Enhance the wellbeing of the people we support.

 What You Will Do

• Assist with painting and decorating projects.

PUBLICITY & MARKETING VOLUNTEER

Across the UK, our 65 local branches work with disabled people to help them live the lives they choose. Our network of skilled volunteers respond to thousands of requests each year to design and make customised equipment free of charge.

Our Publicity & Marketing volunteers play an essential role in publicising and raising awareness of their local branch’s activities.

What will you do? 

This is a varied role that each branch tends to do a bit differently, but it will involve:

• Collecting case studies from the clients we help

• Writing stories for the local press

• Distributing literature

• Arranging talks

• Working with the Central Team to promote panel activities

We can support you to develop the skills you need for this role, and there’s an induction that covers all the areas above. You’ll also have chance to discuss your role and any additional needs with us.

What skills will you need for this role?

• Confident using Microsoft Office, the internet and email

• Confident using social media platforms

• Warm, approachable and confident to engage with clients to gather their story

• Able to follow REMAP policies and procedures

We support our Haringey residents in making positive changes in their alcohol or substance use recovery journey. We have one-to-one, group, and counselling services all under one roof. You'll help people access the support they need by contacting clients, arranging appointments and assisting with clinic bookings. You'll also help keep our records accurate and up to date, supporting important projects that improve health outcomes for the people we work with.

This is a great opportunity to develop administration and communication skills, gain experience in a health and wellbeing setting, and make a real difference in your local community.

Our Barnes Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Skills and experiences we seek

We welcome applications from people with a wide range of skills and experiences. You don’t need any retail or shop experience as full training will be provided. What’s important to us is that you are a team player, open to learning and to follow our policies as well as be an excellent representative for Save the Children.

What happens next?

After you’ve filled in an application, we will invite you for an informal trial shift. It’s a great opportunity to visit the shop, meet some of our existing volunteers and have a go at some of the tasks that you would be supporting with as a shop volunteer. Hopefully allowing you to get a feel for the role and make sure it’s for you. We also ask for a couple of references (these don’t have to be formal workplace ones, just someone who has known you for over 6 months and isn’t related).

Finance Trustee - Treasurer

Goals 4 Girls is a London based charity dedicated to empowering girls and young women through football, mentoring and leadership development.

We work with girls and young women from underserved communities who face barriers to participation in sport, confidence building and personal development. Through structured programmes delivered in schools and communities, we support girls to build resilience, improve wellbeing and develop leadership skills.

Our programmes combine football participation with mentoring, wellbeing support and access to positive role models. By creating safe, female-focused spaces and strong support networks, we help girls develop confidence both on and off the pitch.

As demand for our work grows, Goals 4 Girls is entering an exciting stage of development, expanding our programmes, building partnerships with leading organisations in sport and business, and increasing our national impact.

To support this growth, we are seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Trustees, helping guide the organisation’s financial sustainability and long-term strategy.

Role Summary:

Working closely with the Chair, CEO & G4G Accountant. 

The Role of Treasurer

The Treasurer is a key member of the Board of Trustees, providing oversight of the charity’s financial health and helping ensure strong financial governance.

Working closely with the Chair, CEO and Board, the Treasurer will support strategic decision-making by ensuring that trustees have clear and accurate financial information and that the charity operates with robust financial controls.

The Treasurer plays an important role in helping the Board balance ambition and growth with responsible financial stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

The Treasurer will:

· Oversee the presentation of budgets, management accounts and annual financial statements to the Board.

· Ensure that appropriate financial systems, controls and procedures are in place.

· Monitor the financial health and sustainability of the organisation.

· Support the development and review of financial policies, including reserves and risk management.

· Provide financial insight to support strategic planning and growth.

· Work with the Chair, CEO, leadership team and with the Goals 4 Girls accountant to ensure effective financial planning and reporting.

· Ensure compliance with Charity Commission, SORP reporting and good governance principles

· Oversee preparation of the charity’s annual accounts and liaise with external accountants or auditors.

· Ensure financial risks are identified and appropriately managed.

· Help build financial understanding across the Board by presenting financial information clearly and accessibly.

Skills and Experience

We are seeking a treasurer with strong charity financial expertise who is motivated by the opportunity to support a growing charity making a positive impact in young people’s lives. Please note that only London-based candidates will be considered and this position requires an enhanced DBS check and two professional references.

The ideal candidate will bring:

Essential

·A professional background in charity finance with at least 5 years post-qualification as an accountant, investment or financial management professional 

· Experience of financial oversight, governance or strategic financial planning in the charity sector

· Strong analytical and strategic thinking skills

· The ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial audiences

- An understanding of the Charity Commission requirements relating to finance and governance

Desirable 

Experience of supporting organisational growth or scaling programmes 

· Interest in sport, youth development or gender equality

Most importantly, we are looking for someone who shares our commitment to creating opportunities for girls and young women.

Time Commitment

The Treasurer role is voluntary, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.

Expected commitment:

· Attendance at monthly Board meetings - these are mostly online with the occasional in person Board meeting

· Occasional committee or working group participation where relevant

· Preparation and review of financial information between meetings

The average commitment is approximately 5 –7 hours per month including a one hour monthly Board meeting.

Trustees are appointed for an initial three-year term, with the option of renewal.
