Role Description

INTRODUCTION

Global Charities (operating name Global’s Make Some Noise) is the official charity of Global, the UK and Europe’s largest Radio and Outdoor company.  The Charity brings Global staff and the Global’s amazing brands together to create incredible change for communities right across the UK. 

Since 2014, Make Some Noise (MSN) has raised more than £43 million, changed more than 248,000 lives and additionally reached more than 603,000 people through over 755 projects across the UK​.

We are seeking an experienced, values-driven and analytically strong individual to join our Board of Trustees, with a particular focus on grant-making, impact measurement and an understanding of diverse and marginalised communities.

You will bring rigorous judgement and constructive challenge to Board discussions, helping to ensure our grant-making decisions are robust and evidence-led, and that the charity maximises its impact for beneficiaries across the UK. GLOBAL’S MAKE SOME NOISE

Global’s Make Some Noise utilises the power and reach of Global’s platforms, talent, and client base to raise vital funds and awareness for the charities we support. We also work closely with Global staff 'Globallers’, to tap into their skills and experience, which allows us to build meaningful training and development opportunities for our small charities and maximise the partnership, events and on-air fundraising opportunities.

We align with Global’s proposition of “national brands delivered locally”, so that we are relevant to audiences in terms of both raising money and supporting local projects.  We also align with Global’s culture of Making Everyone’s Day Brighter and work closely across the business to maximise the opportunities under this shared vision.

The Charity works closely with individual radio brands to develop fundraising strategies relevant to their audiences and commercial clients. We continue to focus on growing brand awareness of Global’s Make Some Noise and to innovate our various fundraising streams in order to support small charities that are in need of financial help and align with the Charity’s strategy.

Global’s Make Some Noise actively supports around 100 charities a year, in communities across the UK.  These charities are small (under £1million in revenue) but high in impact, and provide critical help for some of the most vulnerable in our society.

We run 3 programmes to build sustainability in small charities:

· An awareness programme to generate much needed publicity and support

· A grants programme to fund vital services and equipment

· A learning and development programme to help upskill charities

Our mission is to ensure that nobody in the UK is left facing life’s toughest challenges alone.  We deliver that mission through four key pillars :

· Providing shelter and safety; A safe home is essential, yet millions of people don’t live in one.  We work with small charities that exist to support those who have no option but to live on the streets, in temporary accommodation or in unsafe or overcrowded houses. 

· Supporting physical and mental health; We fund crucial services to ensure people can access the support they need to feel well.  This includes funding hospice and care services, mental health helplines, respite support for people with disabilities and their families, and food banks for those living in poverty.

· Improving life skills; We’re supporting programmes that are dedicated to improving people’s life skills and future opportunities.  This includes helping people get the education they need, upskilling them for the future, providing access to wellbeing support, and supporting them into employment.

· Preventing isolation; We recognise how vital it is for people to be connected so we fund crucial projects that prevent isolation.  These include community projects that bring people together to build a sense of belonging, as well providing access to devices that support connections and digital skills training.

THE TRUSTEE BOARD

The Trustee Board comprises of a mix of internal (Global employees) and external Trustees, with specialist knowledge aiming to cover different areas across charity governance, finance, grant making, partnerships, content production, staff engagement, fundraising and marketing.  The full Board meet five times a year, with four quarterly Board meetings and one Strategy half day.  Members of the Finance Committee meet four times a year, ahead of the main Board meeting.  Additionally, there is a Nominations Committee, who meet as required to discuss Trustee/Senior Team appointments.  Board members are encouraged to attend meetings in person at Global’s offices in Leicester Square or Holborn.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Trustees play an essential role in the governance of the Charity and its future development. The Trustees, while retaining total responsibility for the conduct of Global Charities’ affairs, delegate functions to the executive staff and the Grants Panel. The following matters are key Trustee responsibilities:

· Appointment of Trustees and of the Chair

· Appointment of Grants Panel and the Chair, and approval of Terms of Reference

· Appointment of Finance Committee and the Chair, and approval of Terms of Reference

· Approval of the Terms of Reference of any other Panels or Committees

· Agreement of strategy, and approval of strategic plans

· Approval of the Annual Budget and of all expenditure over £200,000

· Approval of the Annual Report and Accounts

· Appointment of the Auditors

Role Description

· To contribute actively to the Board of Trustees’ role in giving strategic direction to the charity, setting overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against agreed targets. 

· To make sure that Global Charities complies with its governing document, charity law, company law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

· To make sure the charity uses its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objects and that the charity does not spend money on activities that are not included in its own objects.

· To scrutinise Board papers, attend quarterly Board meetings and contribute to discussions and decision-making processes.

· To provide guidance on new initiatives and issues in which the Trustee has special expertise.

· To make sure risk management and control systems are in place, with clear delegated responsibilities to staff for managing and mitigating risk, and to monitor these on an ongoing basis.

· To approve annual charity budgets including approval of Senior Management pay rises and monitor financial performance against these budgets.

· To ensure that Global Charities has policies and practice that mean it is able to recruit, retain and develop high quality people.

· To act as an Ambassador for the charity and establish networks in support of the charity’s strategy and reputation.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The Board is looking for an experienced candidate who brings experience across grant-making, impact measurement and understanding of diverse and marginalised communities.  A candidate who also has experience in fundraising, particularly how to technical applications from large funders, Trusts or Foundations, would be beneficial but is not an essential element of this role.

Essential Experience and Knowledge

We are particularly looking for candidates with significant experience in one or more of the following:

· Overseeing or managing a grants portfolio, including assessment, due diligence and decision-making

· Developing, delivering or overseeing impact measurement, outcomes frameworks or programme evaluation

· Working at a senior level with or for diverse and marginalised communities

· Operating at a senior level in the charity, foundation or social impact sector. 

· Significant  charity governance experience and a strong understanding of Trustee responsibilities

Essential Personal Qualities

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate:

· Strong independent judgement and analytical thinking

· Confidence to offer constructive challenge and to speak up thoughtfully in Board discussions

· The ability to weigh evidence and consider multiple perspectives before reaching a view

· A commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion

· Collaborative approach and respect for collective Trustee decision-making

· A passion for the aims of Global Charities and an ambition to make the biggest difference possible to the lives of beneficiaries

Desirable Experience

It would be advantageous if the successful candidate also brings one or more of the following:

· Formal safeguarding training and up-to-date knowledge of relevant legislation and best practice

· Understanding of fundraising regulation and fundraising governance

· Experience of charity finance oversight or scrutiny of charity accounts

· Relevant lived experience connected to the communities and cause areas the charity supports (providing shelter and safety; supporting physical and mental health; improving life skills; preventing isolation)

· Experience on committees, panels or boards

· Useful networks within the charity, grant-making or social impact sectors. Grant funding applications through Trusts and Foundations.

· Knowledge of and interest in the voluntary sector more broadly

· A senior leader in a grant-making trust or foundation

· A Director of Programmes, Impact, Grants or Evaluation

· A charity CEO, COO or senior executive with strong programme and impact experience

· An individual with relevant lived experience and strong governance capability

FURTHER INFORMATION:

The Charity has a fundraising subsidiary, Global Charities (Trading) Ltd, whose principal activity is to contribute to the fundraising for Global Charities.

The ultimate control of the Charity is vested in its member, Global Radio Ltd. The member delegates the running of the Charity and the safeguarding of its assets to the Trustees. The assigned Executive for the member is the CEO, Global, who is represented by the Director, Global Goodness.

Trustees do not receive remuneration, as their role is entirely voluntary. They can claim travel expenses to Board meetings and any essential meetings as agreed with the Chair.

Role summary

St Helena is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to be part of their fundraising team, supporting events and initiatives in their local areas to help raise awareness and much needed funds. The role is flexible and we will fit around your availability. We have events throughout the year and would invite you to support across all areas of fundraising. 

Main duties of this role may include any of the following:

• Attend St Helena events to help with marshalling, registration, refreshments or selling merchandise

• Attend external third party events to represent St Helena

• Attend external events and venues to engage with the public to encourage participants to sign up to events and challenges

• Participate in bucket collections and other fundraising opportunities in the local community as requested

• Be able to set up and oversee a stand at events and promotional opportunities in the local community including supermarkets, markets, town centres, fayres, Christmas light switch-ons and similar events

• Promote the charity and inspire people to support St Helena

• Adhere to St Helena policies and procedures at all times

• Represent The Hospice in a professional manner

• Ensure all information is kept confidential and secure at all times

What we need from you

This is a really flexible role – you can choose what you’d like to get involved with, for example:

• face-to-face fundraising. Organising or helping with fundraising events, running supermarket collections and fundraising stands, monitoring collection tins 
• online fundraising. Setting up online appeals and writing impactful cat case studies that maximise donations
• marketing. Spreading the word about our fundraising activities, for example on social media and with the local press
• completing administration. Processing donations, sorting and recording donated goods, completing Gift Aid paperwork
• championing our work. Getting involved with developing new fundraising ideas and increasing community engagement
• photography. Capturing images of cats in care, cats we are helping, events and all things Cats Protection
• You’ll need to be aged 18+ to volunteer in this role. If you’re aged 16-17, you’ll need to be supervised by a friend, family member, or guardian over the age of 18 in order to carry out any fundraising activity.

Time expectation

This is a flexible role that can fit around your other commitments to suit you. You’ll be part of a team raising vital funds while having fun in the process!

This is an exciting time to lead Age UK Stockport’s Board. To be the Chair of Age UK Stockport is to be an active volunteer in our community. But it’s not the easiest volunteering role! It can be challenging, but it will be rewarding.

Our Board has recently been refreshed after the recruitment of three new trustees who, alongside our established trustees, complete the Board membership.

Our current Chair will be standing down later this year having served the maximum term for the role. We are looking for a dedicated, creative person, with a range of appropriate professional and life experiences to become our next Chair. They will have the interest and commitment to lead and drive forward the development of Age UK Stockport in line with our core values – to be Connected, Confident and Creative.

The successful candidate would join the Board as trustee and Chair Designate and then be elected Chair at the AGM in the autumn of 2026.

The Chair leads the Board, ensuring that it governs the charity effectively. You will support the Board to work together well and will manage and support the Chief Executive. The Chair is also an ambassador for the charity. 

Main responsibilities of the Chair

• Provide strategic leadership to the charity and the Board, ensuring effective governance and accountability
• Work in partnership with trustees, the Chief Executive and staff / volunteer team to achieve Age UK Stockport’s mission, vision and objectives
• Plan and chair the Board meetings and the AGM working with others to achieve this
• Act as a spokesperson and figurehead for Age UK Stockport
• Ensure Board meetings are properly run and recorded
• Represent Age UK Stockport externally, helping, with others, to build partnerships with funders, local / regional authorities, and community organisations
• With others, ensure the charity remains financially sustainable and operationally strong, delivering excellence for people in later life
• Recognise and make best use of trustees’ skills and experience
• Line manage the Chief Executive on behalf of the trustees

Young people play a crucial role in helping us realise this mission. As a volunteer with our youth teams, you’ll be trained to provide our young people with both life skills and lifesaving skills – all while having great fun!

You’ll be working with our brilliant Badgers (aged 7-10) or creative Cadets (aged 11-18). You’ll also have the opportunity to design your own role, whether that involves running fun activities – such as outdoor events, summer camps and mountain adventures – or providing ‘behind-the-scenes’ support.

We are looking for people to join our youth team to help us expand the delivery of SJA's youth programme, particularly our Cadet (10-17 years) members. We currently have opportunities on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings but welcome applicants who could assist us on other days as we do hope to expand further.

We’ll offer you the chance to become a fully-fledged Youth Leader, which will mean completing extra courses in First Aid or Adventure to broaden your capacity and experience.

Would you like to volunteer once a week or once a month? That’s entirely up to you. With the constant guidance of a friendly volunteer manager and youth team, you’ll have all the support you need to make bold strides and rediscover your inner ‘big kid’.

Typically, Cadet groups meet weekly in school term-time. Full Network monthly update meetings take place on the first Monday of each month (this can be attended in person, online or viewed later).

Our amazing team of volunteers help us run over 100 shops across England and Wales.  Every donated item that you sort, prepare and sell helps to raise vital funds to support us in our mission to make sure no one, no matter how complex their disabilities, is isolated, left out, or unable to fulfil their potential. Our shops are at the heart of local communities – sharing the work of Sense, and helping to secure support for our life changing work.

What your role will involve

There are a variety of tasks that you can get involved with in the shop, including:

• Welcoming and assisting customers, providing great customer service and a fantastic shopping experience
• Receiving donated goods from members of the public
• Sorting, steaming, tagging and preparing donated goods for sale
• Creating eye catching window and in-shop displays
• Keeping the shop floor well stocked, tidy, clean and organised
• Processing sales and serving on the till
• Promoting Gift Aid and other Sense fundraising initiatives
• Acting as an ambassador for Sense; promoting the shop and Sense in your local community
• Supporting with the recruitment and training of new volunteers

• Following new health and safety measures to ensure the safety of everyone

Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.

Above all, we are seeking someone who shares our vision and values and is passionate about helping young people, particularly those facing the greatest barriers, build successful futures.

The successful candidate will chair six Board meetings per year (primarily London-based), participate in events, visits, and stakeholder engagement, and commit approximately 1–2 days per month. This is an unpaid role, but reasonable out-of-pocket expenses will be reimbursed. What Will You Do?

As Lead Grants and Foundations, you will:

• Fundraising strategy: Design and implement a comprehensive strategy for identifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding foundation, corporate, and government grant prospects.

• Grant writing and management: Oversee the entire grants lifecycle, from researching funding opportunities and writing compelling proposals to managing awards, ensuring compliance, and submitting reports.

• Team leadership: Lead and mentor a team of grants professionals, such as grants managers and coordinators, to meet or exceed annual funding goals.

• Relationship management: Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with foundation program officers and other institutional funders. Serve as the primary point of contact for major funders.

• Cross-departmental collaboration: Work closely with finance, programs, and leadership to develop grant budgets, gather data for proposals, and ensure funded projects are implemented successfully.

• Compliance and reporting: Ensure the organization adheres to all grant requirements, including financial and programmatic reporting, and prepares for audits.

• Financial oversight: Manage the grant budget and expenditure tracking, and provide financial reports to both funders and internal leadership

• Experience: A proven track record in grant writing, fundraising, or foundation relations, ideally within non-profit or social impact sectors; at least 3-5 years of experience.

We keep local history alive by managing a community centre that houses an internationally important quilt collection. Through exhibitions, workshops, talks and outreach, we promote patchwork, quilting and care for our collection of antique and heritage quilts.

Each year we welcome thousands of visitors through our doors, to explore and learn about our collection and be inspired! The Trustee Treasurer plays a key role in supporting the effective financial governance and sustainability of The Quilt Association. Working closely with the Chair, Secretary, fellow trustees, and any staff responsible for day-to-day finance administration, the Treasurer helps ensure that the organisation manages its finances responsibly, complies with legal and regulatory requirements, and maintains sound financial oversight.

This role is central to helping the Board make informed decisions, safeguard the charity’s resources, and ensure the long-term financial health of the organisation.

Position: Trustee Treasurer

Responsible to: Chair of Trustees

Location: We are based in Llanidloes, Mid Wales, but you don't have to be. We are open to remote and hybrid volunteering, however we do ask that you be within a reasonable distance to attend our key dates and exhibitions.

Hours: Approx 6 hours per month to include the Trustee Board meeting, any preparation work and subgroups.

Expenses: This role is voluntary, reasonable expenses will be reimbursed in accordance with our Expenses policy.

Key responsibilities

As a trustee, you will contribute to the overall development and oversight of organisational strategy. You will be responsible for ensuring the organisation operates in line with its charitable objectives and governing documents, including risk management and compliance with relevant regulations. You'll safeguard the long-term sustainability of the organisation, including financial stability and act as an ambassador for the organisation. As a trustee, you'll also have the opportunity to be involved in the care, conservation, and accessibility of the quilt collection. 

As Treasurer, you will:

• Support the Board in overseeing the financial affairs of the organisation and ensuring that effective financial controls and procedures are in place

• Help ensure that QA operates in line with its governing documents, charity law, company law, and financial regulations

• Work with the Chair, Secretary, and any relevant staff to prepare and present clear financial information to the Board

• Monitor income, expenditure, cash flow, and reserves, helping trustees understand the organisation’s financial position

• Support the preparation and approval of annual budgets and financial forecasts

• Ensure that appropriate accounting records are maintained and that financial reporting is accurate and timely

• Support the preparation and submission of annual accounts, returns, and reports to Companies House and the Charity Commission

• Liaise with independent examiners or auditors where required

• Ensure that appropriate financial policies, controls, and risk management processes are in place

• Contribute to strategic planning and decision-making, particularly in relation to financial sustainability and fundraising opportunities

• Act as a point of contact for trustees regarding financial governance and procedures

• Support trustee induction by ensuring new trustees understand the organisation’s financial responsibilities and position

Person Specification

We are looking for individuals who are committed to the aims of The Quilt Association and who can contribute to the effective governance and financial sustainability of the organisation.

Essential Qualities and Experience

We are looking for people with a willingness to devote the necessary time and effort. 

• Confidence working with financial information and budgets

• Ability to think strategically and make sound judgements

• Good communication and interpersonal skills

• Ability to work collaboratively as part of a board

• A clear understanding of, or willingness to learn about, trustee responsibilities

• An organised and methodical approach to financial oversight and record keeping

• Integrity, accountability, and attention to detail

Desirable Experience

• Experience in finance, bookkeeping, accounting, budgeting, or financial management

• Experience of charity finance, governance, or compliance requirements

• Understanding of financial reporting requirements for charities and companies limited by guarantee

Previous trustee experience is not essential—we will provide induction and support.

Our fundraising team leaders have the exciting and varied role of inspiring our fundraising volunteers to plan and deliver local fundraising events. Using their passion and imagination, they oversee a small team of fundraising volunteers who come together to raise the vital funds needed to cover costs such as veterinary bills and food. Our fundraising team leaders support their team of volunteers in all aspects of their roles, making sure our volunteers are happy, confident and supported.
