Job description

Help rebuild Young Change Makers from the ground up and lead its next chapter.

Young Change Makers is being relaunched, and we are looking for a volunteer Managing Director / Organisation Lead to become the senior day-to-day leader of the organisation. This is not a role where you will inherit a finished organisation. You will help build it.

About Young Change Makers

Young Change Makers exists to help young people turn their ideas into action.

Our aim is to give young people practical guidance, resources and support to develop community projects, campaigns, charitable initiatives and other ideas that create positive change.

Young Change Makers previously existed as a small youth initiative but is now being completely rebuilt. We are starting again with a new structure, new team, new programmes, new website and a much clearer long-term vision.

The Founder is currently establishing the initial leadership team. Our goal is to create an organisation that can operate effectively through its own leadership and volunteer teams, rather than depending on the Founder for everyday management.

The role

As Managing Director / Organisation Lead, you will become the senior operational lead for Young Change Makers.

Working initially with the Founder, you will help take YCM from its current relaunch stage into a functioning organisation with clear departments, systems, programmes and priorities.

One of your first responsibilities will be helping to recruit the wider senior leadership team.

Once that structure is established, department leads will report primarily to you rather than to the Founder.

This means the role comes with genuine responsibility and the opportunity to have a significant influence over how Young Change Makers develops.

What you will be responsible for

You will:

  • Lead the day-to-day operation and development of Young Change Makers.
  • Work with the Founder to turn YCM's mission into practical plans and priorities.
  • Help recruit and appoint the organisation's initial department leads.
  • Manage and support department leads once appointed.
  • Establish clear expectations, accountability and communication across the organisation.
  • Coordinate activity between different departments.
  • Chair or coordinate leadership meetings and ensure agreed actions are followed through.
  • Identify operational problems and make appropriate day-to-day decisions.
  • Help establish internal policies, processes and ways of working.
  • Support the development and eventual launch of YCM's programmes and resources.
  • Work closely with the Safeguarding Lead to ensure youth-facing activity is developed safely.
  • Work with the People & Volunteer Lead to build a positive and properly managed volunteer team.
  • Keep the Founder informed about significant developments, risks and decisions.
  • Escalate major strategic, reputational or organisational decisions where appropriate.
  • Help create an organisation that can function effectively without relying on the Founder for routine management.

One of your first tasks

This role is being recruited before most of the wider YCM team exists.

Once appointed, you will work with the Founder and People & Volunteer Lead to recruit the next senior positions, expected to include:

Head of Programmes & Learning
Partnerships & Outreach Lead
Communications & Marketing Lead
Operations & Administration Lead
Finance & Sustainability Lead

Those leads will then be responsible for building their own teams.

You will therefore play a major part in deciding how the organisation develops from the very beginning.

Who we're looking for

You do not need to have previously been a Managing Director.

We're more interested in finding somebody who can demonstrate leadership, reliability, good judgement and the ability to turn ideas into organised action.

You may be a good fit if you:

  • Are confident taking responsibility and making sensible decisions.
  • Can organise people, priorities and projects.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally.
  • Are comfortable delegating rather than trying to do everything yourself.
  • Can support and motivate volunteers.
  • Are willing to help build systems and processes where none currently exist.
  • Understand the importance of safeguarding when working around young people.
  • Can work independently in a remote environment.
  • Are genuinely interested in youth empowerment and social action.
  • Are comfortable joining an organisation at a very early stage of development.

Previous experience in management, charities, volunteering, youth organisations, education, operations or project management would be useful, but we do not expect one person to have experience in everything.

What this role is not

We want to be transparent with applicants.

Young Change Makers is not currently a fully operational organisation with a large existing team waiting to be managed.

We're rebuilding from the ground up.

Some systems will need creating. Some policies will need developing. Departments will need staffing. Programmes will need rebuilding and launching.

If you want to inherit a finished operation, this probably isn't the right opportunity.

If the idea of helping take something from almost nothing to a functioning youth organisation excites you, we'd really like to hear from you.

What you'll get from the role

This is an opportunity to gain substantial practical leadership experience while helping build an organisation with a social purpose.

You'll have:

  • Genuine influence over the development of Young Change Makers.
  • Significant leadership and management experience.
  • Flexible volunteering around your existing commitments.
  • Remote working.
  • Opportunities to develop skills across strategy, operations, recruitment and project management.
  • The opportunity to build and lead a multidisciplinary volunteer team.
  • Training and development opportunities as these become available.
  • A professional reference following a meaningful period of contribution.

Working relationship

You will initially work closely with the Founder while the organisation is established.

The intention is deliberately for that relationship to change as YCM grows.

Once the leadership structure is functioning, you should have the authority to manage routine operations independently, with the Founder focusing primarily on mission, long-term direction and significant organisational decisions.

A full Young Change Makers Hiring and Team Structure Plan will be provided to applicants so you can see exactly how we intend to build the organisation and where this position fits.
