Our Hexham Shop Volunteers are in the middle of it all, and there’s plenty to get involved with. You might be sorting and pricing stock, engaging with customers, ringing items through the till, creating fantastic window displays or keeping our shop floor looking organised.

It’s up to you how much you commit. We have volunteers who support for a couple of hours a week and some do more. Many people volunteer either a morning or an afternoon each week - this is something that will be discussed at the selection stage, after you’ve applied.

Title:  Operations Lead

About the Role: We are looking for an organised, self-motivated Coordinator to manage our communications and inbox operations independently. You will be the primary point of contact for our volunteer teachers, ensuring smooth operations by following our clear organisation handbook and protocols.

Key Responsibilities:

• Inbox Triage & Teacher Support: Answer routine teacher inquiries independently using established SOPs and the Teacher Handbook. 

• Issue Resolution: Address logistics or schedule friction between teachers and students. 

• Safeguarding Escalation: Identify sensitive issues or trauma reports and immediately route them to the Safeguarding Officer per protocol.

• Teacher Onboarding: Lead the onboarding process for new teacher cohorts (once every three months).

• Match students: Match students with teachers (once every three months)

Qualifications:

• Excellent English written and verbal communication.

• Proficiency in Arabic, French, or German is a strong asset.

• Strong decision-making skills; ability to read policy documentation and act without constant supervision.

• High interpersonal skills, patience, and professional judgment.

• Reliable, detail-oriented, and accountable for completing tasks end to end.

Time Commitment:

• 4 days/week (approximately totalling 4–5 hours per week).

• Minimum commitment: 16 weeks (4 months).

Purpose of the Role:

To support the delivery of engaging and inclusive football sessions as part of the Baytree Centre’s GEMS programme, which offers after-school clubs for girls aged 5–18, you will work alongside a football coach to help create a safe and supportive environment where girls can develop their skills, build confidence, and enjoy being active. You will escort the girls to an off-site football pitch where a professional coach will lead the session. 

Main Responsibilities:

- Escort the participants from Baytree to the offsite location.

- Support the football coach in delivering engaging, age-appropriate activities that promote learning and personal development.

- Help maintain a supportive atmosphere where girls feel comfortable building confidence and working as a team.

- Assist with administrative tasks such as attendance tracking.

- Adhere to Baytree Centre policies and safeguarding procedures. 

Skills and Qualities Required:

- Empathy and patience to work effectively with girls of varying ages, backgrounds, and abilities. - Strong communication skills to engage positively with participants, other volunteers, and staff. - Creativity and enthusiasm for delivering fun, skills-based activities.

- Reliability and commitment to attend scheduled sessions consistently.

- Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team and take direction from the coach.

Commitment:

- One session per week lasting one hour for a minimum of two terms.

- Exact timings will follow the GEMS programme timetable. Sessions usually take place Monday to Thursday between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

The Career Champions programme pairs young people with mentors working in their field of interest, for example, a girl aspiring to become an architect is matched with a practising architect, to provide insight into career pathways, develop professional skills, and build confidence. By sharing knowledge, experience, and encouragement, mentors support participants in making informed decisions about their future education and career choices.

Main Responsibilities:

- Deliver six structured mentoring sessions tailored to the mentee’s career interests and goals.

- Share knowledge, experiences, and practical advice about the mentor’s professional field.

- Introduce mentees to key skills, qualifications, and opportunities relevant to the chosen career.

- Support mentees in setting short- and long-term career-related goals, providing guidance on how to achieve them.

- Foster a positive and supportive relationship that builds the mentee’s confidence, motivation, and resilience.

- Where appropriate, provide insights into workplace culture, networking, and professional development.

- Maintain communication with the programme coordinator to track progress and address any concerns.

Do you have an interest in technology and enjoy helping others? Vision Northumberland is looking for friendly, patient and enthusiastic Tech Volunteers to help people living with sensory impairment get the most from digital technology.

As a Tech Volunteer, you’ll provide friendly, one-to-one or small-group support, helping people develop their confidence, skills and independence when using digital devices and accessible technology.

What will you be helping with?

Depending on each person’s needs and interests, you could support them to:

• Get started with smartphones, tablets, computers and smart glasses.
• Make phone calls and send text messages.
• Use email safely and confidently.
• Browse the internet and access online services.
• Shop online and manage everyday tasks digitally.
• Use video calls to stay connected with family and friends.
• Download and use useful apps.
• Discover accessibility features on Apple and Android devices.
• Use magnification, speech and voice-assistant features.

Our Shop Volunteers raise money for the people we support with a Learning Disability. Do you have a few hours a week to spare and share your time with us?

Our retail roles are varied and fun. You could be sorting donations from the public, dressing our window or serving customers on the till. There are many people from different walks of life and it's a great way to get practical experience and to meet new people.

This role will take place on a weekly basis for a few hours We will try our best to be flexible around the best time for you, but also need to consider the store opening times and volunteer rota. It could be a weekday or weekend, morning or afternoon, our stores are usually open 7 days a week. We’d appreciate any time that you can spare.

Whilst in the store, you will help with activities based on the needs of the Store Manager.

Tasks you could get up to whilst volunteering could include:

• Serving customers on the till
• Taking stock donations from the public
• Tagging and steaming stock for the shop floor
• Dressing the window displays
• Asking people to join us as a volunteer

How can you help? 

As an Events Team Support Volunteer, you will play an important behind-thescenes role in helping our fundraising events run smoothly. You'll help create a positive experience for our supporters from the moment they sign up through to celebrating their achievements after event day. You may be asked to support with a range of activities, including but not limited to:

• Supporter communications: Making phone calls to wish participants good luck before their event, congratulate them afterwards and thank them for their incredible fundraising efforts, as well as preparing and posting good luck cards and other supporter mailings.
• Participant materials: Preparing fundraising packs, participant welcome materials and certificates, ensuring participants receive everything they need.
• Event preparation: Packing event day materials and organising and assembling cheer packs, including banners, pom-poms, signs and other supporter resources.
• Data and administration: Assisting with data entry, updating supporter records, envelope stuffing, labelling and other general administrative tasks.
• Event and team support: Assisting with event logistics in the lead-up to busy fundraising events and helping to ensure the Events Team workspace is tidy, organised and well-stocked.
• Ad hoc support: Supporting wider Events Team projects and administrative tasks, particularly during busy periods, to help keep things running smoothly.

Location and time commitment

This is an office-based volunteering role. We’re therefore looking for someone who is happy to volunteer at our Fleet, Hampshire office initially, before continuing at our new Woking office from early 2027 onwards.

During our busier spring and autumn seasons, we’re looking for a commitment of approximately two hours per week, ideally on a Wednesday. During the quieter summer and winter seasons, this would reduce to approximately two hours every two weeks. We understand that volunteers have other commitments, so we can offer some flexibility and can tailor your experience around your availability. 

Practical considerations You will receive a full induction to The Brain Tumour Charity and any specific training for the role, as well as ongoing direction from one of the Events team, who will be your key contact. We carry out reference checks for all individuals who will be volunteering with us on a regular basis. Volunteers may be required to complete some internal data protection and disclosure documentation before commencing the role. Volunteers must be over 18. It could be a weekday or weekend, morning or afternoon, our stores are usually open 7 days a week. We’d appreciate any time that you can spare.

Whilst in the store, you will help with activities based on the needs of the Store Manager. 

**Tasks you could get up to whilst volunteering could include:**

- Serving customers on the till
- Taking stock donations from the public
- Tagging and steaming stock for the shop floor
- Dressing the window displays
- Asking people to join us as a volunteer

**As a Retail Volunteer you will be:**

- Friendly and Approachable
- Reliable, Kind and Patient
- A good communicator (including listener)
- Willing to volunteer within guidelines and to take direction where necessary
- Accepting of others who might be different to yourself

**As a Mencap volunteer you will:**

- Make new friends and raise important funds for people with a learning disability
- Get reasonable out-of-pocket expenses in line with our policy e.g. travel
- Receive full Training and support
- Volunteer alongside other people
- Have a chance to give back your local community
