Charleston is seeking a new Trustee to join its Board at an exciting stage in the organisation’s development.
Charleston is a year-round cultural organisation with sites in Firle and Lewes, bringing people together to engage with art and ideas. The former home and studio of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, Charleston has a rich history rooted in the Bloomsbury group and a contemporary mission to champion experimental thinking, social inclusion and the power of art to provoke new thinking.
We are particularly seeking a trustee with significant experience in financial management, investment and endowment strategy. You will work closely with the CEO and fellow trustees to shape and lead Charleston’s approach to building and stewarding its new Permanent Endowment Trust, helping to create a secure and sustainable financial foundation for the organisation’s future.
We are looking for someone with:
Knowledge of the arts, heritage, museums or cultural sectors, previous board or committee experience, and experience of strategic partnerships would be advantageous. You do not need to be a qualified accountant.
The successful candidate will join Charleston’s Business and Finance Committee, which meets quarterly, alongside four Board meetings each year in Sussex and London. Trustees serve a three-year term, renewable for a second term subject to Board approval. The role is unremunerated, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.

The Student Publication Association (SPA) is recruiting a new member of the trustee board to assist its work in advancing the education of student journalists across the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland.
As a small, student-led charity, we support more than 250 member publications around the UK and Republic of Ireland, offering advice, training, and recognition at both our regional and national awards.
Our trustee board plays a vital role in our governance, ensuring that we remain within the boundaries of charity law, protecting the charity’s long-term stability, and supporting our student executives.
For this round of applications, we are particularly keen to hear from applicants with one or more of the following:
Strong experience and connections working within the journalism industry;
Experience and connections in fundraising and sponsorship;
Experience of managing budgets and finances;
Experience of working in volunteer organisations.

About The Role
As a small volunteer-run charity, we anticipate the role would take up an average of 1-2 hours a week, although this may increase during busier periods for the SPA, such as around our annual national conference (SPANC).
As a trustee, you will be a collaborative and supportive team player who will:
Attend monthly oversight meetings with the executive committee and other trustees;
Attend other meetings and 1-2-1s as needed on an ad hoc basis;
Offer guidance and support to the executive committee throughout the year to help them achieve their goals, particularly in your area of expertise;
Ensure that the charity is carrying out its core purpose, that resources are managed responsibly, and that activities comply with our governing documents;
Support the delivery of our national conference, including attendance at the weekend itself during the Easter university holidays;
Where possible, attend our induction day, for new executive members each year.
This is a volunteer role, but all reasonable expenses will be covered. The term for these appointments will be three years.
You will be part of a trustee board of ten people; four elected trustees, four appointed trustees, and two ex-officio trustees from our student-led executive committee.

Climate Emergency UK CIC is a small community interest company (awaiting a response from the Charity Commission on becoming a Charity), set up in 2019 to support and connect councils and residents on getting their council to declare a climate emergency, and has since evolved into creating the Council Climate Action Scorecards.
We’re in the process of creating the third Council Climate Action Scorecards, due to be published in Spring 2027. Our other work includes running training, such as the Local Climate Academy and working with others at a national level to advocate for further powers and funding for local councils for climate action. We’re a small organisation and need support from our Board in developing our next strategy. The Boards’ role at Climate Emergency UK is to ensure the organisation runs effectively with financial stability and complies with relevant laws and legislation. The Board also contributes to setting the strategic direction of the Board and upholding the reputation of CE UK across the sector and with funders.
We work on consensus decision-making and want to ensure we remain a cooperatively working organisation. We are currently writing our new strategy, conscious of the political and structural changes in the sector, the difficult funding environment and rise of the capabilities of Ai.
Time commitment: Board meetings every 2 months or so for 2 hours (often weekday late afternoon/evenings but flexible). Support to the organisations, 1-2 hours per week
Board members will be in post for 2 years.

Experience
We are particularly looking for Directors with either/or any of the following:
Landing national media coverage for projects and campaigns and previous work with national and regional news outlets
Experience of effective fundraising for small organisations
Experience managing start ups and organisations through early growth stages
Understanding of AI technology and how this could be used for data collection, processing or to derive insights for decision making
Desirable Experience and Personal attributes
Experience of working in non-hierarchical organisations
Previous governance experience of small organisations in transition and growth stages
Understanding of the council climate movement in the UK or how these can be translated to other relevant sectors
Understanding of local government, either as a councillor, officer or other

Subject to the Board's decision and the provisions of the Articles of Association, appointment as Chair may take place immediately following appointment as a Trustee.
