Senior office administrator volunteer roles in Basildon, essex

We're looking for a legal expert to join our friendly board, and help people excluded from society build bright futures.

Step Together Volunteering is a small but mighty charity. Through our unique, person-centred approach we support people to build the confidence and skills they need to look towards a positive future.

We work with young people, people in contact with the justice system, and the Armed Forces community, through 1-1 support, coaching and volunteering placements in the community. Our support doesn't have a time limit, we work with our clients until they have the confidence and skills they need to look forward to a more positive future.

We work nationally, our Head Office is Bristol, and our frontline staff are home-based in the regions they cover.

Our legal trustee has recently reached the end of her term, and we're now looking to find a new trustee who'd be happy to share their expertise with the board, and provide ad hoc advice to the CEO from time to time.

As a trustee, alongside your fellow board members you'll be responsible for the strategic leadership and administration of Step Together, and we're keen for you to contribute your perspectives and experiences to discussion. Specifically in relation to law, you may be asked to:

• Provide legal expertise and support to the rest of the Board and senior staff to ensure the charity complies with its duties and obligations.
• Ensure there are robust policies and procedures in place for legal and regulatory compliance.
• Liaise with senior staff on ad hoc legal matters to provide support and advice.
• Advise on legal implications of any plans or strategies to aid good decision making at Board level.

Trustees are appointed for an initial term of three years.

What are we looking for?

Your experience will ideally have been gained as a qualified lawyer (in any field, but those with knowledge and experience in employment law, company or charity law preferred).

Good networks within the Bristol area would be advantageous. You will be knowledgeable about the legal environment that charities operate in, including governance best practice, and be comfortable working at Board level, contributing to discussion and enhancing decision-making.

Ability to work at a strategic level is essential.

We are looking for someone passionate about the work we do, who is happy to advocate for and represent the charity to key stakeholders to help further our work and impact.

You'll be helping ensure Step Together is meeting its legal and regulatory duties as well as providing the board and senior team with the advice we need to operate well. More broadly, as a trustee, you'll play an important role in ensuring Step Together is sustainable, well run and has a clear, strategic direction so that it continues it's brilliant work, supporting people who are otherwise left behind.

Commitments

We have two in person meetings per year (one in London, one in Bristol) and two online, plus an 'away day' in the autumn. We're ideally looking for trustees who based in Bristol or the surrounding areas.

Our board meetings and away day are fixed but there may be times we need to get in touch on an ad-hoc basis, or ask you to be involved in task-focussed committees.

The Opportunity

We are seeking a Founding HR Director to join our core leadership team and take full ownership of building and scaling our HR function from the ground up.

This is not a traditional HR role.

This is a legacy-building position for someone who wants to:

Your Mission

To design, build, and lead a high-impact, future-ready HR department that supports:

• A growing volunteer and workforce base
• International recruitment and sponsorship
• Safeguarding and wellbeing for vulnerable communities

Key Responsibilities

1. HR Strategy & Infrastructure (Foundational Build)

• Design and implement the entire HR architecture from scratch
• Develop policies, frameworks, and SOPs aligned with UK regulations and CIC requirements
• Build scalable systems for onboarding, training, performance, and retention
• Establish a values-led organisational culture framework

2. Team Leadership & Department Scaling

• Lead and manage a team of 6 existing HR assistants/coordinators, scaling to 20 HR personnel
• Create clear role structures, reporting lines, and accountability systems
• Train and mentor junior HR staff—many of whom may be early in their careers

3. Recruitment & Talent Development

• Build ethical, inclusive, and scalable recruitment pipelines
• Design structured onboarding experiences for volunteers and staff
• Implement training and development pathways, especially for young people and survivors

4. Compliance, Safeguarding & Governance

• Ensure full compliance with UK employment law and CIC standards
• Develop robust safeguarding policies for working with vulnerable individuals
• Establish data protection and confidentiality frameworks

5. Home Office Sponsorship Licence (Critical Objective)

• Lead the process of securing a UK Home Office Sponsor Licence within our 5year vision
• Build internal systems required to issue Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS)
• Ensure ongoing compliance with sponsorship regulations and reporting duties

6. HR Tech & Systems Innovation

• Manage open-source HR tools and platforms
• Collaborate on building custom internal systems tailored to our mission
• Explore cost-effective, scalable alternatives to traditional HR software

7. Culture, Wellbeing & Retention

• Build a trauma-informed, supportive HR environment
• Create systems that prioritise emotional wellbeing, especially for survivors
• Foster a culture of trust, truth-telling, and accountability

What We’re Looking For

Experience

• Senior-level HR experience (Director, Head of HR, or equivalent)
• Strong understanding of UK employment law and HR best practices
• Experience building or restructuring HR departments is highly desirable
• Knowledge of Home Office sponsorship processes is a major advantage

Volunteer Grant Officer

Southwark Tenants’ Federation – Grassroots Housing Advice Charity

Location: Southwark / Remote (hybrid available)
Time commitment: Flexible (approx. 4–8 hours per week)

About Us

We are a small grassroots charity based in Southwark and the only surviving tenants’ federation in London. For decades, we have supported tenants and residents to defend their housing rights, challenge poor conditions, and have a collective voice in decisions that affect their homes and communities.

Our social housing advice service supports people facing homelessness, disrepair, evictions, and housing management issues, with a strong focus on empowerment and tenant-led action.

The Role

We are seeking a Volunteer Grant Officer to help us secure funding to sustain and grow our vital work. This role is crucial to keeping an independent, tenant-led voice alive in London.

You will work closely with a small, committed team and help ensure our advice service remains accessible to local residents.

Key Responsibilities

• Research grant funding opportunities suitable for a grassroots, tenant-led organisation
• Draft and submit grant applications to trusts, foundations, and statutory funders
• Maintain a simple funding pipeline and track deadlines
• Work with staff and volunteers to gather service data, outcomes, and case studies
• Assist with basic funder monitoring and reporting

• Advise on implications of any current or planned projects within the criminal justice sector to aid good decision-making at board level.

What are we looking for?

Your experience will ideally have been gained through professional work in the Criminal Justice Sector. This could be through employment within the Prisons or Probation Service, other Ministry of Justice role, Youth Justice teams, Police, or with another charity or agency working in the sector.

Good networks within the justice system in the southwest would be advantageous. You will be knowledgeable about the criminal justice sector, the role the voluntary sector plays, and the challenges faced by the different organisations working in the sector.

Ability to work at a strategic level is essential.

Sift is a UK charity providing specialist support, information and advocacy for people affected by self-harm. We work alongside people who have been directly affected by self-harm at every level of our organisation. We are service-user centred, and ensure our service users are at the heart of everything we do. Following an exciting rebrand and the launch of a new website, we are entering a new phase of growth, visibility and influence.

Role Purpose

The Board Secretary helps ensure that Sift is governed with clarity and accountability. This role supports the Board to function well, ensuring that decisions are properly recorded and that governance processes enable the charity’s mission.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare agendas and papers for Board and sub-committee meetings with the Chair and CEO.
• Take clear, accurate minutes that reflect decisions, context and agreed actions.
• With support from the Head of Operations, maintain key governance records, including trustee details, conflicts of interest and policies.
• Support compliance with the charity’s governing document and Charity Commission requirements.
• Assist with timely statutory filings and good governance practice.
• Act as a trusted point of reference for governance-related queries.

Business Development Lead

Role Purpose

The Business Development Lead supports Sift to grow sustainably, so that more people affected by self-injury can access support. This role brings a strategic lens to income generation, partnerships and opportunity development, grounded in the charity’s values and ethical approach.

Key Responsibilities

• Contribute to the development and oversight of Sift’s income generation strategy.
• Support exploration of new funding, partnership and collaboration opportunities including the expansion and relaunch of our national in-person and online training programme.
• Offer insight and challenge on fundraising, commercial or social enterprise ideas.
• Network with key players in the mental health and wellbeing field.
• Help assess risk, impact and alignment with Sift’s mission.

Person Specification

Role Purpose

The Leadership & Governance Director helps ensure that Sift’s leadership, culture and governance remain strong, inclusive and fit for purpose. This role supports the Board to be reflective, effective and accountable as the organisation grows.

• Support trustee recruitment, induction and ongoing Board development.

The Witness Service provides free, independent support to any witness giving evidence in criminal courts in England and Wales — both for the prosecution and the defence.  

Our trained staff and volunteers help people understand what to expect before, during and after a trial, and offer practical and emotional support every step of the way, so witnesses can give their best evidence.   

The Witness Service also supports bereaved family members, and friends and family who are accompanying witnesses in court.

This is an exceptional opportunity to help us ensure a smooth transition and shape a high-quality, high-impact and trauma-informed service — so every witness feels informed, supported and more confident in court.
