Senior project accountant volunteer roles in Glasgow

Accounting for International Development is seeking an experienced charity finance professional to support a UK-registered charity working internationally to strengthen responsible, low-impact small-scale fisheries.

The organisation works with coastal communities, fishery stakeholders and market actors to improve fisheries practices, support responsible sourcing, strengthen policy engagement and contribute to better livelihoods and food security.

They are now looking for a remote volunteer to review and strengthen their finance systems, reporting routines and use of Xero. Some finance processes, reporting and budget monitoring are currently managed outside the system, and they would value an experienced finance professional who can help them improve consistency, accuracy and the usefulness of financial information provided to senior management and Trustees.

This is not a day-to-day finance role. The assignment is intended as an independent review and strengthening exercise, working with the Managing Director, Finance Manager and selected Trustees to identify practical improvements and develop a realistic action plan.

Key areas of support may include:

• Reviewing current finance processes, month-end routines and reporting timelines.
• Reviewing how Xero is currently being used, including any processes or reporting managed outside the system.
• Supporting improvements to monthly management accounts and Board reporting.
• Reviewing internal controls, financial procedures and consistency of finance processes.
• Identifying key financial risks, control gaps or areas where processes could be strengthened.
• Advising on forecasting, budget monitoring and how project managers provide information to the finance team.
• Supporting the Finance Manager to strengthen monthly reporting and budget versus actual monitoring.
• Providing practical suggestions, templates or examples where helpful.
• Helping develop a clear, proportionate action plan with priorities and timelines.

We are looking for someone with:

• Senior charity finance experience.
• Strong financial management, management accounts and Board reporting experience.
• Experience reviewing or improving finance systems, processes, controls and reporting routines.
• Good working knowledge of Xero.
• Understanding of UK charity finance, trustee reporting and governance expectations.
• Experience with international charities or organisations operating across multiple countries would be helpful.
• A practical, diplomatic and collaborative approach.

The assignment is expected to involve up to 75 hours of remote support over around 3 to 4 months. The organisation expects a minimum commitment of around 4 hours per week, with the exact schedule and workplan to be agreed between the volunteer and the organisation.

Director of Finance & Administration

Role Purpose

Lead GSI's financial and administrative operations by ensuring sound financial management, strong governance, regulatory compliance, and efficient organizational systems. The Director will provide strategic financial guidance to the CEO and Executive Leadership Team while safeguarding the organization's resources and supporting sustainable growth across GSI's seven strategic pillars.

Key Responsibilities & Deliverables

1. Financial Strategy & Planning

Responsibilities

• Lead GSI's financial planning, budgeting, and sustainability strategy.
• Advise leadership on financial performance and resource allocation.

Key Deliverables

• Prepare the annual organizational budget.
• Present quarterly financial performance reports to leadership.
• Develop an annual financial sustainability plan.

2. Financial Management & Reporting

Responsibilities

• Oversee accounting, cash flow, financial reporting, and budget monitoring.
• Ensure accurate financial records and responsible use of resources.

Key Deliverables

• Produce monthly financial reports.
• Monitor departmental budgets and recommend corrective actions where needed.
• Maintain accurate financial records and reconciliations.

3. Grant Finance & Compliance

Responsibilities

• Oversee financial management of grants, donor-funded projects, and sponsorships.
• Ensure compliance with donor requirements and financial policies.

Key Deliverables

• Submit 100% of donor financial reports on time.
• Support preparation of project budgets for funding proposals.
• Monitor grant expenditure and compliance throughout project implementation.

4. Administration & Operational Support

Responsibilities

• Oversee procurement, contracts, and administrative systems that support organizational operations.
• Promote efficient and cost-effective business processes.

Key Deliverables

• Review procurement and administrative procedures annually.
• Ensure organizational assets and contracts are properly managed.
• Support operational planning across departments.

5. Governance, Risk & Audit

Responsibilities

• Strengthen financial controls, manage financial risk, and coordinate audit activities.
• Support compliance with nonprofit regulations and organizational policies.

Key Deliverables

• Coordinate the annual external audit.
• Maintain and review financial policies and internal controls.
• Implement audit recommendations within agreed timelines.

Key Performance Indicators (KPIs)

Performance will be measured by:

• Timely delivery of budgets and financial reports.
• Budget accuracy and financial performance.
• Compliance with donor and regulatory requirements.
• Successful completion of annual audits.
• Effective cash flow and financial risk management.
• Efficiency of procurement and administrative systems.

Role Impact

The Director of Finance & Administration ensures GSI remains financially sustainable, transparent, and accountable. Through effective financial stewardship, strong governance, and efficient operational systems, the role enables the organization to maximize its resources, build donor confidence, and deliver lasting impact across all seven strategic pillars.

• Master's degree (MBA, MPA, MSc Finance, or equivalent) is strongly preferred.

Professional Certifications

One or more of the following is highly desirable:

• CPA (Certified Public Accountant)
• ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants)
• CMA (Certified Management Accountant)
• CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst)
• CIMA (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants)

Experience

• Minimum 7 years of progressive experience in finance, accounting, grants management, administration, or nonprofit operations.
• At least 3–5 years in a senior leadership or management role.
• Experience with donor-funded projects, international NGOs, foundations, or development organizations is highly desirable.

About the Role

We are seeking dedicated and passionate individuals to join our board of trustees. Our mission is to provide school meals to children in developing countries, with the goal of reducing hunger and improving educational outcomes

As a trustee, you will work collaboratively with fellow trustees to provide strategic guidance and oversight to the charity. You will help ensure our activities align with our mission and values. The trustee will work closely with other members of the board and staff to develop and implement plans and policies that support the charity's objectives and maximise the positive impact of its work.

Key responsibilities

• Serve as a member of the board of trustees, providing governance and oversight to the organisation
• Uphold Charity Commission and legal responsibilities as a trustee and company director
• Collaborate with fellow trustees and staff to develop and implement strategies, plans and policies that support the charity's objectives and values
• Champion the charity to external stakeholders and partners
• Attend and actively participate in board meetings and events
• Ensure robust compliance with legal and regulatory requirements

Person Specification

• Genuine passion for international development and our mission to end child hunger
• Experience in one or more of the following areas: [AK1] finance, programmes, marketing, fundraising, technology, and operations
• Experience of charity finance, for example financial oversight, budgeting, or reading and interpreting charity accounts would be especially valued for this appointment, although it is not essential
• Strong analytical, strategic and critical thinking skills
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to contribute constructively to board discussions
• Ability to work effectively as part of a diverse team
• Willingness to dedicate time and energy to the charity’s success
• Strong understanding of governance and regulatory requirements for charitable organisations, demonstrating integrity, accountability, and commitment to collective decision-making

Commitment

Trustees are expected to attend all board meetings which are scheduled to accommodate trustee’s availability. Most meetings are done via video conferencing, and on occasion we meet in person at a suitable location. Individual commitments are agreed between each trustee and the Chair of the board, but the following is a general guide.

• Board meeting – quarterly
• 2-hour meetings with reports to read one week in advance

• 30-minute conference calls occasionally required in between board meetings
