VOLUNTEER: IT & Digital Lead

Why We Need You

SUNSHINE is launching programmes, recruiting volunteers and building a community-powered movement across London. To do this smoothly, safely and professionally, we need someone who can:

• Set up our digital systems.

• Help everyone understand how to use our tools confidently.

You’ll be the person who ensures SUNSHINE runs smoothly behind the scenes — the digital architect who keeps everything connected.

What You’ll Do

As IT & Digital Lead, you will:

• Set up and configure Office 365, including emails, SharePoint and user accounts.

• Implement and maintain our cloud-based CRM and Caseload Management Systems.

• Configure laptops, tablets and phones for SUNSHINE Charity use only.

• Ensure all devices and data are secure, protected and compliant.

• Create simple digital processes that make volunteering easier.

• Provide IT/Digital support to volunteers when needed.

• Lead or support induction sessions to help volunteers understand:

  • How our digital systems work

  • How to use them confidently

  • Why they matter for safety, connection and good practice

• Work closely with the Safeguarding & Compliance Lead to ensure digital safety and GDPR alignment

You’ll be joining a charity where kindness is a superpower, community is everything, and every volunteer helps bring SUNSHINE into people’s lives.

Time Commitment & Availability

This is a flexible operational volunteer role, not a trustee position.

• Around 4 hours per month.

• Additional hours only for urgent IT issues or onboarding needs.

• Must be available at least 2 evenings per month.

• Must be available one weekend daytime per quarter (for inductions, device setup, volunteer training or digital support).

We’ll work around your life and schedule — we simply need someone reliable who can help keep SUNSHINE digitally strong and secure.

Heartwood House is a unique organisation, working to support and empower young people to engage with education and achieve their potential, free from mainstream system constraints. At Heartwood House, we deliver full-time education for students experiencing emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA). Our, methodology places wellbeing at the core of students' education, focusing on mental health, personal growth, and positive social interactions alongside academic instruction.

To telephone befriendees at their home for approximately 10 to 30 minutes, you will arrange the specific times of your future calls directly with them. These calls are intended to occur once a week, but individual needs will be matched with your availability.To provide a telephone conversation, a listening ear and chat about interests and hobbies, helping to alleviate loneliness and feelings of isolation. To provide companionship and human interaction at a time when this may be limited. To provide an update after each call to the Telephone Befriending support Team. This is so we can keep a track of the amount of befriending calls each volunteer is undertaking, the type of support being offered during these calls and if there is anything further required.

It is important to note telephone befriending is not counselling or therapy and other services must be sought if this is required.

Why we want you

As a community engagement volunteer you and your fellow branch members will create a range of activities to help spread the word about SSAFA within your community to ensure that that our Armed Forces community know that SSAFA are here to help and that we need the public’s support to continue offering our services.

This role is diverse and allows for you to focus on the areas that you have skills or interests in. The role has flexibility and can work around your other commitments.

Below are some examples of possible activities you can take on or be a part of as a SSAFA Community Engagement Volunteer.

What you will be doing

• Activity Organisers - Love planning? Help coordinate amazing events like charity dinners, carol concerts, and local fairs.
• Event Champions - Be the friendly face of SSAFA! Help at events, chat with visitors, sell merchandise, and spread the word about our work.
• Promoting SSAFA Services - Help provide a warm, welcoming presence at Veterans Breakfast clubs, cafes or hubs - offering information about SSAFA services and signposting as appropriate.
• SSAFA Storytellers -Deliver engaging talks to organisations and groups, sharing SSAFA’s incredible history and mission.
• Community Connectors - Collaborating with the Community Engagement Manager to establish a local network, promote SSAFA's services, and respond to community opportunities such as gardening projects.
• Fundraising Heroes - Whether it’s rallying local businesses, organising events, or getting creative with unique fundraising ideas, you’ll play a crucial role in keeping SSAFA’s support going strong.
• Administrators - Are you detail-oriented and love keeping things organised? Assist with branch and event administration, manage schedules and branch calendars, and ensure everything runs smoothly currently being undertaken.
